The Affordable Care Act
The U.S healthcare system is complex, consisting of multiple players unlike the single-payer system which is common in many countries. The healthcare in the country consists of the federal, private and public payers, creating a hybrid system of healthcare. Major challenges of this system have been the increasing costs of health care, which has seen a number of policies developed. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has been regarded as one of the greatest policies that created change in U.S health care policy since the enactment of the Medicare and Medicaid (Bauchner, & Fontanarosa, 2016). The ACA policy framework has had great influence on nurses and patients, which has led to considerable increase in healthcare insurance, improvement in quality of care and reduction in health care costs.
The increasing healthcare cost, poor health care coverage and poor access to health care insurance prompted the development of ACA (Anderson, 2014). As a result, the major drivers of ACA were cost, quality and access. Since its enactment, the ACA has achieved major milestones towards achievement of its goals. According to (Bauchner, & Fontanarosa, 2016) since the implementation of the ACA, over 18 million that were previously uncovered has gained access to medical care. Many people can now access care in health care systems that emphasize on value rather than volume. Although the ACA has achieved a few milestones, especially enhancing health care coverage, little can be shown in terms of reduction in cost and its sustainability in increasing health care coverage.
