The Design Structure in the Organization I am Familiar

The business strategies and types of leadership have great influence on organizational structures. The type of structures in organizations are varied and different, for example, in the corporate world the common forms of organizational structures include functional, project based, divisional and matrix structures. In a global multinational such as McDonald’s to which I am familiar with, everything is departmentalized. The fast food chain’s restaurant setting consists of four major departments, the general manager, people manager, guest manager and the kitchen manager.

The organizational structure in McDonald’s can be described as being mechanistic. According to (Robbins & Judge, 2013) mechanistic organizational structure is characterized by extensive decentralization and formalization. This is evident in McDonald’s since the departmental managers are responsible for overseeing the aspect of the restaurant operation within their area of jurisdiction. They are responsible for the accountability of their departmental results that make up the overall results of the restaurant. However, at the restaurant level, the food chain assumes a hybrid model, where it shows organic and mechanistic structures as the organization uses cross-functional teams at this level.

Organization structure and design is integral in the creation of good coordination and effective communication among employees and the management to enhance productivity. Therefore, it is of believe that the structure employed by McDonald’s is effective. This is because in the restaurant environment, every employee within the different department has one goal, to serve the customers and as a result belong to a team.
