Western Mining Standard Operating Procedures for Machines and Equipment
The work health and safety management system (WHSMS) provides a framework for safe operations in a mine. A comprehensive and well designed WHSMS must include training, policy, operations, hazard management process, emergency response plan and communication process (Hughes & Ferrett, 2010). The paper will provide standard operating procedures for machines for Western Mining Company.
Training and Skills Assessment
- All workers must undergo compulsory machine operation training and competency tests.
- Workers including contractors and regular visitors must undergo training that is relevant to their needs.
- Training shall be carried in-house while taking into consideration the composition and the characteristics of the workforce. This shall take into consideration factors such as the level of education of the workers, their language, literacy, complexity of hazards, work responsibility and severity of risks involved.
- Upon successful training, compulsory competency tests will be done before the workers are given full responsibilities of machine operations. This shall be done by authorised persons in charge of training while making appropriate documentations.
Safety Operation of Machinery
Risk control is an important step towards minimising hazards and this can be achieved through isolation of workers through guarding, use of engineering controls and personal protective equipment. The following procedures govern the safe operation of machines through in the company.
- All workers must undergo training on correct use and maintenance of personal protective equipment.
- All workers must wear or use protective gears before operating a machine.
- Workers who work in the machine rooms must ensure they put on protective attire at all times. For example, the gas masks, protective gloves and aprons.
Annual Shut-Down Shut-down should be done through proper plan, with necessary equipment and people, done at least six months before actual shut-down.……………………………………………………………………………………………………
