Addressing Bias Best Practices in Family Nurse Practice

The advanced nurse practice offers a nursing student with an opportunity of gaining expert knowledge to working in specialty nursing care (Moran et al., 2019). The authors asserts that the advanced practice registered nurse knowledge equips the nursing student with advanced nursing skills and clinical competencies for making complex nursing decisions in their areas of specialty. In my advanced nursing education, the chosen specialty area is family nursing practice. In family nursing practice, the advanced registered nurse practitioner works in collaboration with other healthcare practitioners to deliver family-based care. However, this practice can expose the registered nurse practitioner with some form of explicit or implicit bias in the course of care delivery. Advanced registered nurse practitioner must develop personal awareness and the influence that one may have on their practice. Any form of biases in care delivery can negatively influence the healthcare outcomes.

How Bias Impact Outcomes in Family Nurse Practice

The patient care outcomes are a product of the relationship established between the care provider and the care receiver. In family nurse practice, the advanced registered nurse practitioner delivers family-based care and is exposed to possible bias arising from culture, race, ethnicity, and physical appearance. Research indicates that practitioner bias in general nursing care and family nurse practice is associated with reduced care outcomes (Zerwekh & Garneau, 2020, p. 509). Maina et al. (2018) indicate that conscious (explicit) and unconscious (implicit) biases from providers of care impact on the quality of care and are responsible for the disparity in health care. In family care practice, the impact of practitioner bias on patient and care outcomes is evident in the disparate treatment of patients. For example, suggesting different treatment plans for different patients even though the only difference is the cultural background and skin color. Such differences due to provider bias negatively affect the nursing outcome and can lead to patient mistrust of the family care practitioners.

Personal Biases and Attitudes towards People that are Different from My Own
