The nursing theory that I chose for this assignment is the deliberative process nursing process theory. I chose this theory because it addresses the fundamental nursing concept of nurse patient relationship. How a nurse relates and communicates to his or her patient largely defines how effective they are in delivering patient centered care.  Available evidence suggests that such patient centered care is critical in promoting recovery and well being of the patient (Tk & Chandran, 2017). Therefore, this theory provides a framework under which nurses can improve their relationship and collaboration with their patients and consequently provide care that is patient centered.

The deliberative nursing process theory is based on the argument that patients have their personal meaning they assign to events, feelings and situations. Therefore, it is important for the nurse to validate their own assumptions, inferences as well as conclusions with their patients. In this theory, Ida Jean Orlando suggests the interrelationship between the nurses and their patients. The action of either of them has an impact on the other (Tk & Chandran, 2017). This theory involves five interactional concepts namely professional nursing functions, presenting behavior, reaction, process discipline for nursing and continuous improvement. The organizing principle within this framework is the professional nursing function. Presenting behavior refers to the actual problematic situation that the patient is facing (Tk & Chandran, 2017). Immediate reaction refers to the actual internal response. Nursing process discipline relates to the procedure of investigating the needs of the patients.  Improvement is resolving patient’s situation. This theory further outlines the deliberate nursing process as a five stage process. The stages include assessment, patient diagnosis, care planning, implementation of nursing plan and an evaluation of the success of the plan (Estupinan, Lord, Crumblish & Risher, 2018).

There are four major interrelated concepts that are central to nursing theories and which collectively make up the nursing metaparadigm. These include person, health, environment and nursing (Lee & Fawcett, 2012). The deliberative nursing process theory addresses itself to each of these concepts. To begin with, the concept of person refers to the individual, their family or community who are primary recipients of nursing care (Lee & Fawcett, 2012). The theory of deliberative nursing concept of person through outlining the process of assessment to determine the care needs of the individual patient. Environment refers to the surrounds of a patient including their physical surroundings as well as the people around them. This theory addresses itself to the concept of environment equally through the assessment of the impact of the patient’s environment on her presenting behavior and overall healing process (Tk & Chandran, 2017). The theory further addresses the concept of health through the diagnosis step as well as the implementation of the care plant that addresses the patient’s situation and presenting behavior while improving their health. Lastly, this theory addresses the concept of nursing through its emphasis on the process discipline for nurses.

This nursing theory is useful to the nursing process for several reasons. First, it outlines a framework for collaboration between the nurse and the patient (Estupinan, Lord, Crumblish & Risher, 2018). This enables the nurse to offer patient centered care. Secondly, it outlines an effective process through which nurses can offer care to the patients. The five stage process is instrumental in offering effective nursing care that is tailored to the needs of each patient. This theory further finds application in MSN particularly within the healthcare policy specialty. The theory will inform the formulation of policies that encourage patient participation in health care delivery. Healthcare policy makers
