Introduction

            The social problem chosen for this paper was corruption in the American society experienced by Jurgis and his family members. At the beginning of chapter one, Sinclair presented Jurgis as the ideal, hardworking immigrant who was willing to do whatever is necessary to pull himself up by his proverbial bootstraps and succeed as a working America(Sinclair, 1906). However, Jurgis was operating within a capitalist environment controlled by profit machine individuals. These individuals noticed the traits of Jurgis and his desperation to earn more money to settle the huge debts. Sinclair depicted Jurgis as physically equipped for work at hand, seemingly moral, hard-working, honest, but not bright, and perhaps most importantly. As a result, Sinclair portrayed protagonist as admirable and worth rooting for.

Thesis statement

            Contrary to the behavior of Jurgis, the general manager of the Packingtown, the meat processing company was not environmental conscious. Sinclair painted out the picture of corruption in this book by illustrating how the capitalist exploited labor and market to make super huge profits (Long, 2015).
