Summary of educational and professional goals
Past experiences with ill family and friends led me to choose nursing as my career. This included looking out for a younger brother who suffers from autism as well as a friend who suffers from asthma. This instilled in me a caring and nurturing personality as well as ability to cope with stressful situations. Based on this background, there are a number of educational and professional goals that I wish to achieve in the next ten years.
One of my main goals is lifelong learning in the field of nursing. The nursing program I am pursuing equips me with a variety of knowledge and skills that have stimulated me to pursue further competencies in the nursing field. In the light of this, I would like to acquire more nursing skills, knowledge and experience both in classroom and practicing situations. This includes pursuing master and doctorate degrees in nursing as well as various post-graduate certificate programs. It also involves initiating and participating in various evidence-based practices (EBP) programs at the workplace to contribute to research in various areas of nursing. I will join relevant nursing organizations and attend nursing conferences and workshops so as to stay current. These learning initiatives will ensure that I am more competent and effective as a practicing nurse by making me understand the rationale and methods in my work. It will also enable me to effectively pass on the acquired knowledge, skills and experiences to other nurses, including nursing students.
Another goal is to become a successful nurse by developing the necessary characteristics. This will ensure that I have a fulfilling and satisfying career by positively impacting on the patients and people I interact with. This includes being emotionally stable, compassionate and empatheticin a mostly stressful profession that has many traumatic situations that involve suffering and death. In so doing, I will be more effective in my roles as a caregiver and a comforter for the afflicted. Developing the characteristics also involves enhancing my communication and team skills so as to liaise more effectively between the doctor and the patient, anticipate situations as well as interact and bond effectively in a nosocomial environment and in class. This would involve respect for people and rules; being impartial, confidential and mindful of cultures and traditions whilst putting the patient first at all times.
Anticipated and unanticipated situations call for problem-solving skills, quick response and calmness on the part of the nurse, qualities that I aim at enhancing. Physical endurance and flexibility are also important characteristic that will enable me cope with rigorous schedules and activities as well as fit my personal activities around my career since nursing involves working long hours, nightshifts and working weekends. Attention to detail is a quality that will make me avoid mistakes and near misses that have far-reaching consequences in the health sector.
My goal is to attain, develop and conform to the above characteristics so as to make me an effective nurse throughout my career.
Another goal is to provide healthcare community service especially to the less fortunate in society. This will be my way of giving back to the community. This could involve traveling to developing countries where there are many people who cannot afford nursing services. It would also involve volunteering my services in places where there are disease epidemics and disasters. I will achieve this by joining disaster response organizations such as America Red Cross and also registering with various nursing and disaster registries. Serving the less fortunate will ensure that I provide care and comfort to the poor and deprived, help me enhance my aptitudes and self-esteem as well as make me interact with people from different places and backgrounds.
With these goals of continuous learning, attainment of important nursing characteristics and volunteering, I aim to develop into a holistic human being who contributes to healthcare provision and making the world a better place for all.
Philosophy of Nursing
I will pursue lifelong learning to become the best nurse I can be. As the finest of Fine Arts that deals with a living body, unlike painting, sculptor or even architecture that deal with non-living things, nursing is a fine calling and a privilege that I will embrace with my whole being.
This is by practicing my core values and beliefs as well as developing the requisite characteristics that include kindness, honesty, endurance, teamwork, impartiality, confidentialityand success. The values and characteristics will guide my caring and comforting of patients and my service to the well-being of humanity.
Through lifelong learning and…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. Philosophy of Nursing
