Baby Boomer Generation (1963–1983)
All wars had ended and rise of a new generation was underway, the Baby Boomer Generation. The generation rose after the end of the World War 2, when different nations were trying to seek political, economic and social stability (Hoadn.d). The popular culture during that time was the surfing culture. The surfing culture represented carefree fun for people, where economic prosperity was at peak as well as political idealism. This culture brought light to the film and video industry since the movie industry were interested in making memories of such fun times, and what better way than to make films representing the baby boomer generation. The movie industry wanted to fill the gap of this popular culture and capture the moments with videos.
Baby Boomer Generation of 1963–1983 was peaceful and people from different races and ethnic backgrounds interacted freely (CNN Libraryn.d). During this time the American Veterans were returning from wars and the American population increased rapidly. The Boomers attended integrated schools since the communities were embracing cultural diversity and there was less or no discrimination in the American societies at that time. The culture was characterised by love, counterculture sex, films and videos as well as rock and roll (Kentn.d). Women during this generation also received liberation and there a lot of rise of feminists’ movement that fought for gender equality in the American communities(CNN Libraryn.d). People during this time received much support from the government including the social security benefits.
The Baby Boomers generation during this time were known to be wild, spontaneous and fun, which translated to the film and video industry.The surfing culture, which was among the popular culture in this generation, was represented by great taste, style, aspirations, mature character and mobile people(Hoadn.d). Film was a critical ingredient when it came to this generation during the mid-60s and mid-80s. There were dozens of films and videos that were produced during this time representing the popular surfing fashions as well as the values and character of these people. Hollywood was exiting at this time and many movies related to counterculture sex and love was being produced. Surfing films were also produced in great numbers, which was a reflection of this people culture.
