DIGITAL SYSTEMS AND MICROPROCESSOR DESIGN

H7068 DIGITAL SYSTEMS AND MICROPROCESSOR DESIGN: COURSEWORK 2019 Remarks:

 All the coursework has to be done in VHDL. Coursework handed in using another language will be marked as zero.

 Coursework must be typeset.  Never use screenshots or photograph of code in your coursework. Typeset code within your

coursework report using a monospace font (e.g. courier new).  Never use photographs of waveforms in your coursework. Use a proper screen capture tool to include

a high resolution screenshot in your coursework.

a) Consider the register bank of the educational processor (file cpuregbank.vhd of labcpu):

The objective is to create a testbench for this circuit, and simulate the a few operations including storing data in it as well as retrieving data from it.

In order to do this, use the file cpuregbank.vhd which is in labcpu zipfile. The file dffre.vhd is also required as it is used internally by the register bank.

H7068 DIGITAL SYSTEMS AND MICROPROCESSOR DESIGN: COURSEWORK 2019

The ports of cpuregbank are:

clk : in STD_LOGIC; — Clock rst : in STD_LOGIC; — Reset signal (active high) d : in STD_LOGIC_VECTOR(7 downto 0) — Data to write to a register

— (when rwren is enabled) rwren : in STD_LOGIC — Set to 1 to write d into register rwr rwr : in STD_LOGIC_VECTOR(1 downto 0) — Selects which register to write to. — The register encoding is identical — to that used in the assembler

— instruction encoding. rrd1 : out STD_LOGIC_VECTOR(1 downto 0) — Select which register is

— mapped to q1 rrd2 : out STD_LOGIC_VECTOR(1 downto 0) — Select which register is

— mapped to q2 q1 : out STD_LOGIC_VECTOR(7 downto 0) — Content of register selected by rrd1 q2 : out STD_LOGIC_VECTOR(7 downto 0) — Content of register selected by rrd2 dbg_qa : in STD_LOGIC_VECTOR(7 downto 0) — This is a debug signal which has

— the content of register RA. It is — used in the lab to display the — register content on the 7-segment — display. (A production processor — would not have this signal)

dbg_qb : in STD_LOGIC_VECTOR(7 downto 0) — Same as dbg_qa but for RB dbg_qc : in STD_LOGIC_VECTOR(7 downto 0) — Same as dbg_qa but for RC dbg_qd : in STD_LOGIC_VECTOR(7 downto 0) — Same as dbg_qa but for RD

First, your test-bench should ensure a regular clock is driving clk with a clock period of 100ns, and a 50% duty cycle.

Then, the testbench should allow to test a variety of operations the sequence described hereafter.

i) Reset: The test bench should first reset the register bank. The reset is synchronous. It should also set rrd1, rrd2, d, rwr, rwren to zero.

ii) Store1: store the value 0x55 to register RA

iii) Store2: store the value 0xAA to register RB

iii) Store3: store the value 0xFF to register RC

iv) Load1: get the content of register RA on q1 and RB on q2

v) Load2: get the content of register RC on q1 and RD on q2

In the coursework report:

i) Explain the testbench file you constructed, what it does, and how it does it. In order to do that, provide the complete source of the testbench, and in the main text of your report explain the testbench file. By “explaining the testbench”, we ask you to first provide an overall explanation of how you intend to simulate the system, and then explain the purpose of each of the VHDL constructs you are using to realise the tests indicated above. Make sure you explain where the Reset, Store1, Store2, Store3, Load1, Load2 operations take place.

Note: if you create the testbench from Vivado’s user interface, a lot of default comments are inserted by Vivado. Remove these, as they are not useful for this coursework.

H7068 DIGITAL SYSTEMS AND MICROPROCESSOR DESIGN: COURSEWORK 2019

ii) Provide a screen capture of the waveforms resulting from the testbench. All signals must be legible. Make sure that all the values in the waveforms are legible and in hex. Note: do not take photographs! Use a proper screen capture tool, such as pressing the “Print Screen” key. Explain what can be observed on these waveforms. Make sure you highlight on the waveform (e.g. with mspaint) where the operations Reset, Store1, Store2, Store3, Load1, Load2 operations take place.

All the register bank signals must be visible in the waveform.

[20 marks (10 marks for the testbench and associated explanation, 10 marks for the waveform and associated explanations; if the testbench does not work, not marks will be

assigned)]

b) Consider an input signal (i.e. a square wave) which has a maximum frequency of 1MHz. We want to count how many times the input signal transitioned from 0 to 1.

Detail three approaches to count the number of transitions.

i) the first approach should be a pure digital circuit (i.e. no processor).

ii) the second approach should consist only of a processor (UoS educational processor).

iii) the third approach should be a combination of processor (UoS educational processor) and a digital circuit (e.g. interfaced on the external I/O bus), both working together to acquire the number of transitions. You have significant flexibility here in finding an implementation that offers an advantage compared to (i) and (ii) in some interesting way. As a hint, consider that the input signal could have potentially a much higher clock frequency than the one at which the processor operates.

In the report:

i) explain the implementation of your system in a way that another engineer would understand it. In particular, provide schematic for variant (i) and (iii) and provide assembler code for variant (ii) and (iii). Explain your choice, and how your implementation works.

Make sure in the report that you do provide the code and schematic, and explain in the core text what the code or circuit does, and how.

ii) discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each approach.

[20 marks (5 marks per implementation with comments, 5 mark for the indentification of advantages and disadvantages]

c) The Sussex Educational Processor executes an instruction every 3 clock cycles. Explain why that is the case and specifically what happens during each of these three clock cycles.

[5 marks]

d) Explain and justify what is the maximum addressable memory for the processor using the mov instruction (note that this is not the amount of available memory, which was 32 bytes in the labs; it’s the maximum amount of memory which could be ‘touched’ by the processor).

[5 marks]

e) You are provided with the following VHDL code of a logic gate:

H7068 DIGITAL SYSTEMS AND MICROPROCESSOR DESIGN: COURSEWORK 2019

entity something is port ( clk : in STD_LOGIC; s : in STD_LOGIC; r : in STD_LOGIC; d : in STD_LOGIC; q : out STD_LOGIC); end something; architecture Behavioral of something is begin process(clk) begin if s=’1′ then q<=’1′; else if clk’event and clk=’0′ then if r=’1′ then q <= ‘0’; else q <= not d; end if; end if; end if; end process; end Behavioral;

The resulting logic gate is a variation of a type of gate commonly used in digital systems. Explain what is this logic gate and how it behaves.

[5 marks]

f) Write an assembler program that performs a loop exactly n times, with the value n specified on 8-bits on the external interface. Write down: i) the assembler code; ii) an explanation of what the assembler code does, line by line.

[10 marks (5 marks for the program, 5 for the explanations)]

g) Consider the program below. Explain line by line the operation performed by the instruction and the resulting register values for registers RA, RB, RC, RD. Write the value that is in the register after the execution of the instruction in the corresponding column; if the value is unknown indicated this with ??. Assume we do not know the content of the registers on program start.

RA RB RC RD mov rb,32h . . . . xor rd,rd . . . . sub rd,rb . . . . shr rb . . . . asr rd . . . .

[5 marks (1 mark per correct line)]

h) You are provided with the following memory dump. Write the assembler instructions corresponding to this memory dump.

H7068 DIGITAL SYSTEMS AND MICROPROCESSOR DESIGN: COURSEWORK 2019

Address Data 00 1330 02 3303 04 5770 06 B10A 08 B002

[5 marks (1 per correct instruction)]

i) Explain how many total number of ALU operations could be realised in the UoS Educational Processor if you modified the cpualu.vhd keeping the current structure of the instruction encoding, and provide an explanation for your answer.

[5 marks]

j) Consider the instruction “MOV [RB], RD” (assume RA=08h,RB=55h,RC=37h,RD=A0h). Assume we are shortly before the clock edge of the “execute” cycle (i.e. at the next rising edge the instruction will be executed).

By analyzing the VHDL code of the processor, explain what happens inside the educational processor to execute this instruction. Specifically, indicate the state of the following signals (or indicate if undefined):

instruction (in cpu.vhd) rrd1 (port of cpuregbank in cpu.vhd) rrd2 (port of cpuregbank in cpu.vhd) rwr (port of cpuregbank in cpu.vhd) d (port of cpuregbank in cpu.vhd) reg1out (in cpu.vhd) reg2out (in cpu.vhd) source (in cpu.vhd) regwren (in cpu.vhd) flagwren (in cpu.vhd) ram_we (in cpu.vhd) ram_address (in cpu.vhd) ram_datawr (in cpu.vhd) op (port of cpualu in cpu.vhd) a (port of cpualu in cpu.vhd) b (port of cpualu in cpu.vhd) aluqout (in cpu.vhd) alufout (in cpu.vhd) wrdata (in cpu.vhd) finally, summarize the overall processor behavior with this instruction.

[20 marks (1 mark per correct signal value, 1 mark for a correct explanation)]

What am I required to do in this assignment?

1. Task

Students will develop a DM solution for saving cost of a direct marketing campaign by reducing false positive (wasted call) and false negative (missed customer) decisions. Working on this assignment, students can consider the following scenario.

A Bank has decided to save the cost of a direct marketing campaign based on phone calls offering a product to a client. A cost efficient solution is expected to support the campaign with predictions for a given client profile whether the client subscribes to the product or not. A startup company wants to develop an innovative DM technology which will be competitive on the market. The Manager will interview and hire Data Analysts. The team will analyse the existing technologies to design a DM solution winning the competition. A team Manager will choose the best solution for the market competition in terms of cost efficiency. The evaluation of the developed solutions will be made on the test data. The costs will be defined for both the false positive and false negative predictions.

Examples of cost-efficient DM solutions for direct marketing are provided on the UCI Machine Learning repository describing a Bank Marketing problem.

Students will apply for one of roles: (i) group manager, (ii) group member, or will work  individually. The group manager will arrange comparison and ranking of solutions designed in a group, and will have additional 5 points. Each student will run individual experiments to find an efficient solution and  describe differences in experimental results.

2. Method and Technology

To design a solution, students will use Data Mining techniques such as Decision Trees and Artificial Neural Networks. Examples of solutions will be provided in R Scripting using (i) a Cloud technology CoCalc or (ii) an advanced development suit RStudio free for students.

ASSESSMENT TASK: CASE STUDY

Read the following case studies and address each question and/or task for each case study.

CASE STUDY 1

The partners who own ‘Green Tour Excursions’ where you work as Duty Manager have decided to reappraise the operations of the Fraser Island Tours which operates five (5) vehicles and drivers who also take on the role as tour guides.

The partners say there are too many potential legal issues and complaints from customers and as a result the bottom line of the business is suffering. They say the average turnover has decreased by 15 % and custom likely will be lost to other operators although comparative tours have the same cost for this day tour.

The itinerary which was in place for the current one (1) day island wilderness trip included:

§  Central Station including Wanggoolba Creek boardwalk

§  Lake McKenzie – a swim in crystal clear waters and pristine white sands.

§  Seventy-Five Mile Beach

§  Eli Creek – swim or float in the clear waters

§  Maheno Shipwreck – take a photo stop at the rusting wreck of the Maheno washed ashore during an out-of-season cyclone in 1935

§  The Pinnacles Coloured Sands – learn of the Butchulla legends surrounding them.

Inclusions:

1.    National Park Fess

2.    Morning Tea at a picnic ground

3.    Picnic Lunch

4.    Transfers from Hervey Bay Accommodation to ferry return.

The main issues which have been identified by the partners of ‘Green Tour Excursions’ for the particular tour included:

1.    On three (3) out ten (10) tours the 4-wheel drive tourist vehicle ran out of fuel which resulted in a 1 hour shortfall of the trip on each occasion.

2.    On two (2) trips the air conditioning of the vehicle failed.

3.    There were eighteen (18) complaints about poor hygiene relating to cups and cutlery used for morning tea and picnic lunch.

4.    Twelve (12) customers have expressed concerns of being provided with food from eskis and service vessels provided from a plastic container.

5.    Three (3) customers have complained about being served pastries from a card board box which must have been the packaging provided by our supplier.

6.    There were four (4) claims from customers who claimed they felt unwell or sick after consuming the BBQ picnic lunch which includes a small steak, sausages, 2 different salads and bread and butter.

7.    There are increasingly complaints from drivers of the vehicles that their days are too long given that they are required to prepare their vehicles post and before each trip which could potentially breach WHS requirements and entitlements.

8.    Twelve (12) customers have expressed concerns of being provided with food from eskis and service vessels provided from a plastic container.

9.    There were three (3) incidences during the past two (2) months where customers had close encounters with venomous snakes in the toilet block located the picnic area used for stops.

You are required to investigate these issues and explore provisions to meet all legislative requirements.

Present your responses in report format suitable for presentation at a management meeting.

1.    Describe how you would monitor the work hours  of the driver/tour guide and the efficiency involved in those hours – this would also mean you need to identify relevant problems associated with adjusting staff levels to attain the requested improvement

2.    Show what consultative process was used to allow for procedures and systems (including rosters new or amended service provisions) to be adjusted. Show that in this area, quality assurances can be given so that customers will not be affected and indicate the time frame involved in your change

3.    List the measures taken to ensure functional clean vehicles, and prevention of hygiene issues

4.    In your new plan, you must show the delegation process that will be involved. Will you need new job specifications to be written? If so, how many?

5.    Will training be necessary to accommodate the new jobs if this is the option you recommend the owners to take? Estimate a budget for retraining should it be necessary

6.    Describe how day-to-day operations will not be negatively affected with your proposed changes

CASE STUDY 2

Elena, the front office clerk has asked you for an urgent appointment to see you.

On arrival to the meeting, Elena explains to you that her supervisor in front office frequently makes silent offensive remarks and has stalked her on multiple occasions after work. It also seems that he rosters her for the same shifts when he is rostered on.

(The document HR manual template may be referenced for this case study)

1.    What appears to be the nature of complaint here?

2.    Which procedure should be followed to receive a complaint like the one from Elena

3.    Write a standard operating procedure that can be used to investigate a complaint, including actions for e.g. EEO and sexual harassment matters.

4.    Which legal responsibilities do have in your capacity as a manger in this instance?

CASE STUDY 3

You are the manager at the ‘Ocean View Hotel’.

During the last four (4) weeks the numbers of patrons during dinner service on Wednesdays to Fridays have doubled. Although this is good news for the operation, there have been associated with this a number of operational issues which need to be addressed swiftly to prevent bad publicity in social media and on trip advisor.

During the four (4) week period the hotel had twelve (12) complaints related to delays in meal service, sixteen (16) complaints relating to poor or average quality of meals. A brief conversation with sous-chef and head chef have indicated that the access to and lack of capacity of some equipment are some of the main issues they are facing.

In front of-house (F&B) the same staff has been rostered on the periodic schedule as usual, and staffs do not think there are any issues.

1.    Provide a systematic approach for areas you will investigate

2.    Provide solutions for the shortfalls in equipment pointed out to you, given that the new budget is still five (5) months away and major expenditure was just completed to finish the accommodation areas.

3.    Which aspects will you investigate in the food and beverage/service areas?

4.    Provide details for the staff who will be involved in the process.

CASE STUDY 4

You are working in the capacity of manager in a trendy inner city boutique hotel, featuring 45 rooms, a gym and wellness area, a 60 seat cafe -bistro, an 80 seat restaurant and seating for 50 customers in the mall.

The food and beverages are in line with using local produce and following trends, however you have noticed that due to the large number of part-time employment of students and, it seems, lack of direction from the departmental supervisors, products and services are always different.

Not that there have been any substantial complaints, however beverages are presented differently at different times, food presentation varies and it looks portion sizes are not uniform, and the rooms are made up and arranged differently depending who is in charge and on duty, accordingly.

1.    Provide suggestions for a system that can be effectively developed and implemented for each department and explain in detail what this entails for each department. Your approach must include delegation at the appropriate levels.

2.    What are the implications for all existing staff as a result and how will you provide for overcoming these?

Diseases of the Veins

Assignment: Disorders of the Veins and Arteries

Advanced practice nurses often treat patients with vein and artery disorders such as chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and deep venous thrombosis (DVT). While the symptoms of both disorders are noticeable, these symptoms are sometimes mistaken for signs of other conditions, making the disorders difficult to diagnose. Nurses must examine all symptoms and rule out other potential disorders before diagnosing and prescribing treatment for patients. In this Assignment, you explore the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and clinical presentation of CVI and DVT.

To Prepare

  • Review the section “Diseases of the Veins” (pp. 598-599) in Chapter 23 of the Huether and McCance text. Identify the pathophysiology of chronic venous insufficiency and deep venous thrombosis. Consider the similarities and differences between these disorders.
  • Select a patient factor different from the one you selected in this week’s Discussion: genetics, gender, ethnicity, age, or behavior. Think about how the factor you selected might impact the pathophysiology of CVI and DVT. Reflect on how you would diagnose and prescribe treatment of these disorders for a patient based on the factor you selected.
  • Review the “Mind Maps—Dementia, Endocarditis, and Gastro-oesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)” media in the Week 2 Learning Resources. Use the examples in the media as a guide to construct two mind maps—one for chronic venous insufficiency and one for venous thrombosis. Consider the epidemiology and clinical presentation of both chronic venous insufficiency and deep venous thrombosis.

They now want you to turn your focus to your primary task, which is to assist in expanding the business by building relationships with selected real estate agents, accountants and legal firms through strategic alliances. They also want you to consider how CCF & MB can consolidate its relationships with its existing strategic partners.
Let’s recap on what you already know about Capital City Finance and Mortgage Brokers (CCF & MB).
It’s a family owned business providing a range of mortgage and finance broking services to the business and private sectors, with experience in all facets of finance and insurance, providing expert advice covering a multitude of products and options existing within the market.
CCF & MB specialises in home loans, commercial lending, business lending, personal and motor vehicle finance and insurance (life and general) and focuses on helping clients find the finance service suited to their individual circumstances.
It provides its services through its association with the following partners:
• Australian Aggregators: a rising company within the aggregation business, with an extensive panel of residential and commercial lenders, and asset finance.
• ABC General Insurance: a boutique insurance company specialising in a full range of general insurances.
• XYZ Life: a small family-owned insurance brokerage specialising in the full range of life insurance products.
Based in the city, CCF & MB has the capacity to service clients from their office or anywhere at their clients’ convenience through its team of mobile brokers.
CCF & MB does not hold a credit license but operates as a credit representative of Australian Aggregators.
Since its inception 13 years ago, CCF & MB has built a loan book of almost $1.2 billion and averages over $120 million in new loans annually.
CCF & MB’s vision is to be the mortgage and finance broker of choice in the greater metropolitan area.
CCF & MB’s mission statement is: ‘to operate professionally in accordance with legislation, our licence and professional standards’.
CCF & MB’s values are as follows:

• to meet all NCCP regulatory requirements
• to comply with all mortgage industry laws and regulations
• to ensure quality and efficiency in its loan processes.
CCF & MB’s people
CCF & MB is owned by husband and wife, George and Mildred Spencer.
With over 35 years’ experience in finance and business ownership, George established and built a successful business dedicated to assisting clients with managing their finances effectively. Starting the business with his wife Mildred 13 years ago, George gained immense satisfaction in seeing it expand, to service more and more clients across the city and greater metropolitan area. Although in recent years he has stepped back from dealing directly with clients, he still maintains a small select clientele. He also takes great pride in training and mentoring his team to enhance their performance.
Mildred has over 22 years of lending experience and is qualified, not only to assist her clients with their mortgage requirements, but also to assist them with their commercial finance requirements. She also holds financial planning qualifications. She specialises in asset finance.
The company has a small team of five additional consultants and two administration staff members. Profiles for the team are as follows:
• Jennifer Dee is recognised as one of the top female brokers in Australia. She has been in the broking industry for over 10 years and has a passion and dedication to assist and accommodate all of her clients’ needs with their financial dreams. Jennifer is an Accredited Mortgage Consultant with the Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia (MFAA).
• Louise Spencer (George and Mildred’s eldest daughter) is an Accredited Mortgage Consultant with the Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia (MFAA) and has been working as a loan consultant for almost two years. Louise started off in the lending industry in the office as an administrator to gain as much experience and knowledge as possible before taking a broking role. Her passion for helping her clients ensures that she is always available to her clients at a time and place convenient for them.
• Michael Spencer is George’s younger brother and is CCF & MB’s equipment finance specialist. He has over 25 years working in the equipment finance industry. He has developed an in-depth understanding of the transport and agricultural industries, and also provides finance for general equipment, motor vehicles and computer equipment.
• Martin Long has specialised in equipment finance for the last three years, but prior to this he spent five years operating his own retail food business. This practical experience allows him to see things from his client’s point of view, including experience with equipment finance. He specialises in plant and equipment in the machinery, woodworking and packaging industries. Examples of some of the equipment he has financed are farm machinery, extrusion lines, plastic injection moulders, commercial catering equipment, woodworking plant, packaging lines, forklifts, office fit-outs and many different motor vehicles.
• Luis Ramirez migrated to Australia as a young boy; 25 years ago with his family. After completing high school he graduated from university with an accounting degree and worked in ANZ in commercial lending. He joined CCF & MB four years ago and specialises in vehicle and capital equipment financing. He provides ITC and general equipment lease funding options for clients. By providing better outcomes, both during and at the end of their equipment leases, Luis’ many clients have been able to reduce costs and maximise the value of their available budgets.
CCF & MB is a member of the MFAA, as a broking business dealing directly with the public. Both George and Mildred are fellows of the MFAA. CCF & MB is also a corporate member of the FBAA.
All staff members, including consultants, are paid an annual salary plus superannuation. Consultants also receive a car allowance plus a percentage of trail commissions, which are paid quarterly based on their performance targets.
