Qz. #1: Contrast of the Work of Renoir and Laurtrec

            Renoir was a renowned artist, known particularly for his impressive work that represented real life events. An example of one of his famous work of the 1870s is the “Dance at le Moulin” (Gruitrooy, 2006). Although most of his work resembled those of 19th century artists such as Monet, Renoir, would later pursue his own style in mid 1870s. His most famous art featured dance scenes.

In his paintings, Renoir captured real life scenes with his joyful paintings. His work of Dance at le Moulin de la Galette displayed a great resemblance to the luminosity of Carot and represented an anticipation of plein-air modern way of impressionism. Renoir and Monet had passion drawing water and light and together they developed the impressionist style, which would define the works of Monet. However, most of his paintings represented the present culture and he employed huge strokes of color in order to create contrast when painting light and water.

            Laurtrec incorporated similar themes as those of impressionists such Renoir and most of his work explored cultural events (Chapman, 2013). Most of his works are regarded as post-impressionist, and it resembled Japanese paintings. This explains why most of his work attracted criticisms and were regarded as not of impressionist styles. An example of famous work of Laurtrec is the Au bal du Moulin de la Galette, where he depicted a dance hall popularized by the impressionists, representing true life and culture of the Parisians.  However, unlike Renior, Laurtrec employed large and black blocks of color and black thick lines. Both artists represented social lives in their paintings, representing the existent culture.
