Question 1: How did the Texas Rangers brutalize and kill Mexican Tejanas/os in order to push them off their land?
From the book, the Texas Rangers brutalized and killed Mexican Tejanas to push the off their land using various approach. The book highlighted the use of unscrupulous banking deals, law foreign, setting traps to them and later killing them. For example, in the case of Daniel’s family, the Texas Rangers came to him with orders from the governor to over protection from “undesirable” (Carmona 26). Being a law-abiding citizen, Daniel trusted the Rangers despite the atrocities they were committing against the Mexican Rangers.
Therefore, when the Texas Rangers approached him to help in pursuing and capturing the bandidos who were stealing his cattle, Daniel gladly agree to it and he brought with him Chonnie and Macario, a decision that he would never live to regret. The Texas Ranger led Daniel, Macario and Chonnie into a trap they had set because John Kleberg had offered them a lot of money to face Daniel to sell the range at $50 per acre.
After being led into a well-laid plan, “Daniel, Macario, and Chonnie were dragged into the clearing, they saw the trap set in the sharpest white moonlight”. Pablo told Daniel “Now, I know what you’re thinking,” before he was interrupted by Chonnie by asking, “What in tarnation is going on? I though we were chasing bandidos for rustling cattle, but here we are Ain’t this a pickle (Carmona 55). Tricked into this here well-laid plan. Like mice, or even better yet, cockroaches. Because that is what you people are.” This is how the Texas Rangers brutalized and killed Mexican Tejanas to push out them out of their land.
As stated in first paragraph, the Texas Rangers approach the Mexican Tejanas with orders from the Governor promising them a protection against bandidos (Carmona 27). This way, they earn trust from the Mexican rangers and recruit them to help in pursuing bandidos where they are latter brutalized and killed in a well-planned hide out. For example, Governor Stillwell got assistance from non-Rangers such as ZefrinoPeunte who sold out his land. In the conversation, James Stillwell stated that “… then what? You’ll stop taking our money? You’ll confess to the authorities.” (Carmona 50). This is because Zeferino was not comfortable with what De Plata family was going through. In response to this, Ranger Captain said, “I’m the man that’s gonna get you…if we don’t get your continued cooperation.” (Carmona 51). This was one way of keeping Zeferino from talking to the authorities
