This population segment is going to need assistance, which will be catered for by living facilities, nursing homes and their families. Since many of them will rely of friends and families to meet their needs, it exposes them to neglect and abuse. According to (Day, Boni, Evert & Knight, 2016) elder abuse is defined by WHO as deliberate physical, emotional, and financial acts of harm or neglect.
Financial Abuse
Neglect is the most common type of elder abuse and the hardest to prove. According to (Mattu, Grossman, Rosen & Carpenter, 2016) neglect is the failure or the refusal to meet part of the individual obligation or duties of an elderly, which can be intentional or unintentional. Intentional neglect refers to the failure to provide services and goods which are necessary for the optimal health of an elderly. The unintentional neglect is the inability of the concerned individuals to provide the necessary goods and services or the lack of knowledge on how to provide the required care.
The two common categories of elderly neglect are psychological and financial abuse. Financial abuse is the failure of the concerned individuals to employ the available funds to provide goods and services for the needed care and safety of an elderly. It involves mainly the family members or the person that is trusted by the elderly over the financial decisions that directly affects the health or the safety of the elderly.
