Introduction
The healthcare reforms and the population dynamics in the US healthcare system have brought many changes. These changes not only affect the healthcare organizations but also the healthcare workforce. The healthcare workforce is expected to play a critical role in the successful implementation of the healthcare reforms. The healthcare reforms will provide many openings for RNs and LPNs. However, these changes will provide different roles and settings with many job opportunities available for RNs who have trained in advance practice procedures and techniques, (Oxtoby, 2013).
Reflection on the Recommendations of the IOM Regarding Future of Nursing
The IOM recommendations on future of nursing examines how the roles and education of the nurses in the United States should change in order to cope with the increasingly aging population and the increased demand for quality care from the healthcare workforce.
In order to remain competent and adaptive to these changes, as a nursing professional it would be imperative that necessary skills and training procedures are adopted. These skills will enhance the versatility and quality of outcomes of the care provided to the patients. An aging population calls for change in the way nursing practice is carried. Most of these patients are old and require special attention and it is for this reason that a patient centered approach becomes an inevitable course of action. In order to cope with these changes, there is need for further education from RNs to baccalaureate degree.
There are many ways one can be ready in order to cope with these changes as a healthcare workforce and this include advancing education in the nursing field. The change from traditional care into modern techniques and procedures is inevitable. Many organizations are adopting the new reforms proposed in the affordable care act. They are continuously becoming accountable care organizations (ACO). This calls for the nurses and other healthcare professionals to adopt leadership professionals in order to carry out the necessary coordination and implementations. In order to be ready for these increased challenges and demands, it would be necessary to adopt better qualifications and training by enrolling in doctorate degree programs.
The ACO programs are intended to reduce costs of delivery of care in addition to improving the outcomes of healthcare delivery. Only the competent and well trained workforce are well placed to handle these new programs and it is for this reason that enrolling in baccalaureate and nursing doctorate degree programs would a RN well placed to handle these future changes. Cost effective nursing procedures can be attained by making the patients the centre of care, a feat only achieved through continuous lifelong learning.
