physiology of most of our major organ systems. For this final
assessment, you are going to research and prepare a 6–8-
minute presentation on a disease of your choice that will be

systems we have covered in either HBS202 or HBS204 and
you must be able to describe how the disease changes the
physiology of the system. This may make some diseases
harder than others so think carefully about your choice.

In your presentation, you must include the following
information:

1. An introduction – make sure you introduce yourself and explain why you have picked the
disease you will be discussing.
2. Information about the disease – this could include how many people will suffer from the
disease, causes if they are known and symptoms.
3. How the disease changes the physiology of the tissue/organ system(s) involved. You will need
to make sure that you introduce what is normal before you discuss how the disease changes it
and leads to symptoms mentioned in question 2.
4. What is one aspect of the disease that you have chosen that researchers are currently focussing
on, this is where you will need to have a look in the scientific literature, and it needs to be
“current” specifically from 2020 or 2021.
5. Potential treatment – you need to pick one intervention that is commonly used to treat the
disease and explain how this works making sure you talk about the relevant physiology.

Remember – this assessment is about you communicating the physiology of your chosen disease not
just general information about the disease copied from the internet.
You will need to do some research and include information that isn’t just from textbooks and Wikipedia.
You will need to reference your presentation (further information on this will be provided on the LMS).
Instructions
The objectives of this task are:
• To investigate a novel physiological concept (i.e. something that is relevant to, but has not been
directly covered by, your lectures);
• To develop research skills: to select appropriate sources of reliable and relevant information;
• To develop scientific writing skills: to use vocabulary appropriate for a general scientific
audience when preparing your talk, and to develop a concise story that conveys the major
features of the technique in a logical sequence;
• To develop audio-visual presentation skills: to use information gathered by your research to
construct a short verbal description of physiological concepts using diagrams to assist you with
your explanations;
• To develop correct referencing and other acknowledgement skills.

able to help you answer all of the parts of this assignment:

Any Anatomy and Physiology textbook will be able to provide you with useful basic
information

Websites
The web is an immense resource, but be careful – apart from some sites such as those run by the
publishers of scientific journals, very few web sites are peer-reviewed or checked for accuracy. For
further information on assessing the integrity and validity of information sources, visit the La Trobe
University library web site (http://www.latrobe.edu.au/library/help-and-training/videos). Also
remember that any information sourced from the web has to be acknowledged in a citation, just as a
print-based reference would be. Wikipedia is not an acceptable reference for this assignment.
You need to make sure that you include in text citations where relevant. You do not need to use APA7
as this takes up a lot of space on your slides. Instead consider using author date or numbering of the
references on your slides (have a look at the video on the LMS for more information). You need to
include a full reference list at the end of your presentation.
For this assignment you may find that some of your references are from the early 2000’s,
particularly those about your chosen disease – that is perfectly OK. Remember, you do need
to use a resource that is from 2020 or 2021 for one aspect of the presentation


Create your presentation
After you have gathered all your research together and decided what should be included (and just
as importantly, what should be left out!), the next step is to record the presentation with voice over
to demonstrate your knowledge in this area. There are a number of tools that can be used to record
your presentation. PowerPoint slides with audio voiceover is perfectly acceptable (information on
how to do this can be found on this website https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-record-voiceover-
powerpoint-4173784). A follow on article explains how to convert your presentation to a video
https://www.lifewire.com/convert-powerpoint-to-video-4165363. An alternative approach is to
record yourself in Zoom. If you are feeling adventurous, you can try one of these other software options:
• ‘Explain Everything’ (collaborative & interactive whiteboard; http://explaineverything.com)
• ‘CamStudio’ (screen and audio capture; http://camstudio.org)
• ‘Camtasia Studio’ (TechSmith Corporation, free trial version) This is what we use in
the department to create the recordings that you see on the LMS
• Quickcast (Mac; free)
• Screencast-O-Matic (Windows; free; https://screencast-o-matic.com/home)

If you would like to appear in your presentation, that is great but there is no expectation that you

do. You must make sure that you include slides of some kind in your presentation to be eligible
for full marks.

Submit your presentation for assessment
Once you have recorded the presentation, you will need to save it as an .mp4 file and upload it to
the dropbox on the LMS. This is not a drag and drop submission, you need to read the
instructions that are on the LMS about how to do this. Please note that it does take some time to
upload the file, don’t panic that it isn’t there but you do need to make sure you allow a bit more
time to process the file.

You must also submit your slides and script to a separate Turnitin drop box to ensure that you
have written the information in your own words. This is not marked but you must submit
your script.

Deadline
Your presentation is to be submitted to the LMS drop box no later than 23:59 on Sunday
14th November.


Assessment
This task will be assessed based on the detailed marking rubric provided on the last couple of
pages of this document. The marks for your audio-visual presentation will be weighted as
follows:

• 60% on scientific content; and
• 30% on the quality of the presentation and
• 10% on the correct use of references


Within three weeks of submission, a member of the physiology teaching staff will mark your
presentation using the rubric below and provide written feedback. You will receive a mark out of
100 for your presentation but remember this will be scaled down to a mark out of 30 for your
final grade.

Late submission You will be able to submit your assessment for 5 days after the due date
(until 23:59 Friday 19th November), however your final mark will be subject to a penalty of 5% per
day that your submission is late up to a maximum of 25%. After 5 days you will be given a mark
of ‘zero’

The PowerPoint slides need to be saved as a PDF file and uploaded to Turnitin for submission. Students ARE NOT required to actually give a physical presentation.
This assignment supports unit learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Assignment details
You are asked to develop a presentation that responds to the following question:
In what ways can the NSW child protection system address the rights of Children Who Live in Low Socio-Economic Environment?
Write a 1500-word speech in response to this question in such a way that it would be read out as a speech to a professional practice audience, e.g. at a conference, a professional development day at your organisation or a practitioner team meeting.
Use your annotated bibliography to inform your work and help you establish a basic claim or statement about the topic and critical argument for this position, clearly stating what recommendation(s) you are suggesting to address the issue you’ve identified. Discussing one recommendation in depth with critical comment is sufficient.
Use a minimum of three peer-reviewed sources and an overall minimum of five references to support your recommendation(s). This means you can use grey literature, lecture content, workshop activities/discussion, videos, websites, etc. You should also include relevant legislation within your presentation (i.e. UNCROC [UNICEF n.d.] and NSW Children and Young Persons [Care and Protection] Act 1998 [Austlii 2021]).
Design PowerPoint slides that you can use to deliver your speech; a maximum of 10 slides (not including an introductory slide and a reference slide). Do not use animation or slide transitions. You are encouraged to use pie charts, graphs, icons, symbols, pictographs or any other visual elements that support your presentation.

The company has a small team of five additional consultants and two administration staff members. Profiles for the team are as follows:
• Jennifer Dee is recognised as one of the top female brokers in Australia. She has been in the broking industry for over 10 years and has a passion and dedication to assist and accommodate all of her clients’ needs with their financial dreams. Jennifer is an Accredited Mortgage Consultant with the Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia (MFAA).
• Louise Spencer (George and Mildred’s eldest daughter) is an Accredited Mortgage Consultant with the Mortgage and Finance Association of Australia (MFAA) and has been working as a loan consultant for almost two years. Louise started off in the lending industry in the office as an administrator to gain as much experience and knowledge as possible before taking a broking role. Her passion for helping her clients ensures that she is always available to her clients at a time and place convenient for them.
• Michael Spencer is George’s younger brother and is CCF & MB’s equipment finance specialist. He has over 25 years working in the equipment finance industry. He has developed an in-depth understanding of the transport and agricultural industries, and also provides finance for general equipment, motor vehicles and computer equipment.
• Martin Long has specialised in equipment finance for the last three years, but prior to this he spent five years operating his own retail food business. This practical experience allows him to see things from his client’s point of view, including experience with equipment finance. He specialises in plant and equipment in the machinery, woodworking and packaging industries. Examples of some of the equipment he has financed are farm machinery, extrusion lines, plastic injection moulders, commercial catering equipment, woodworking plant, packaging lines, forklifts, office fit-outs and many different motor vehicles.
• Luis Ramirez migrated to Australia as a young boy; 25 years ago with his family. After completing high school he graduated from university with an accounting degree and worked in ANZ in commercial lending. He joined CCF & MB four years ago and specialises in vehicle and capital equipment financing. He provides ITC and general equipment lease funding options for clients. By providing better outcomes, both during and at the end of their equipment leases, Luis’ many clients have been able to reduce costs and maximise the value of their available budgets.
CCF & MB is a member of the MFAA, as a broking business dealing directly with the public. Both George and Mildred are fellows of the MFAA. CCF & MB is also a corporate member of the FBAA.
All staff members, including consultants, are paid an annual salary plus superannuation. Consultants also receive a car allowance plus a percentage of trail commissions, which are paid quarterly based on their performance targets.

The -Rainforest Book Company- is a company that specializes in books on geography, natural habitats for endangered species and wildlife books in general. In order to reduce overheads and costs, the book company only has one office and operates by mail-order or Internet access . When a customer wishes to purchase a book, they need to set up an account. The Sales Department at the Rainforest Book Company receives the request and sends out a blank Account Request form. The form has space for the following information:
Customer Name, Customer Address, Customer Phone Number, Customer Fax Number , Credit Card Information (if applicable), Credit Card Number, Type of Credit Card Expiration Date, Cardholder’s Name, ZIP or postal code of the billing address for this card
The customer sends back a completed Account Request form. The “for office use only” section is filled out by the Sales Group. This information includes the processor’s identification, the date the account is opened, and a customer account number that is assigned. The customer account file is updated, and the Account Request form is filed. The Account Processing Department receives notification of the new account and sends the customer a confirmation letter. This letter notifies the customer of their customer account number. This number can be used to expedite the ordering process.
Customers can make inquiries about books they wish to purchase by giving any of the following information: (book title and book author) or ISBN number. The Sales Department first verifies that the customer has a valid account. If the book is found based upon the information that was given, the customer receives the following information about the book:
Title of the book, Author of the book, Paperback/Hardcover, Price, Date Published, Availability, Reviews
If the book is not available in stock, all of the above information is returned and an out-of-stock notice is sent specifying the approximate date the book will be in stock. If the book is no longer in print and has been discontinued, an out-of-print notice is sent to the customer. This out-of-print notice includes a list of Used Book Stores in the customer’s country.
If a customer decides to purchase books, they need to place an order for the books. They first request a book order form from the Sales Department. A blank book order form is forwarded to the customer. The customer account number and the date the order is being placed is entered. The following information is included in the book order:
Customer Account Number, Date Order is placed, Title of the Book, Author, Paperback or Hardcover, ISBN, if available
In addition, the customer indicates the shipping option by entering the following information:
Standard Shipping or, Second Day Air or, Next Day Air
Placed orders are sent to the warehouse, and the customer account file is updated. The warehouse issues an order confirmation when the books are shipped. The invoice is generated and then sent to the customer. The customer then sends the invoice slip and a payment or authorizes the use of a credit card on file to the Accounting Department. The Accounting Department processes the payment and updates the customer account. Additionally, the Sales Department generates a monthly sales report and forwards it to Management.
Management has decided that the customer facing interface will be provided as a mobile app using a Web-based mobile development methodology, that way they can provide for IOS and Android as well as other mobile OS’s. Additionally, management has plans to expand the functionality of the app, but at this stage do not have a clear idea of all the requirements. These will be added as the project progresses after brainstorming sessions. They also wish to use Oracle DB on their IBM S914 server, though they are considering a cloud-based solution
