The aim of this assignment is to address a managerial ethical challenge by referring to the academic literature on the OB topic. The scenarios provided have OB issues and ethical dilemmas. All of the topics building on your first-year learning. You are to choose one of the scenarios and using 6 journals from this approved list, research and discuss resolution of the issues. You also need to access 6 periodicals from this list. You must use the library to source these articles which speak directly to the OB issue. Of course, your textbook is always a good reference. We will see how to do this in the workshop. Web pages are not to be used for this assessment. This is a research learning assessment.
Case Study – Changing Times at the BBC
The BBC has been undergoing significant change in the past few years leading to an independent review in 2016 which found that there were some “serious failings in the BBC’s culture and its systems of communication, management and investigation” (Smith, 2016:32) at the time, with concerns around bullying and harassment or staff complaints not being listened to. Aside from this there have also been criticisms about the pay/gender gap between staff.
The organization had a new Director General in 2015 who has spearheaded, via the HR department, large scale re- organisation, leading to the development of a culture which now sees people “coming to work wanting to do the best they can” (Hughes-D’Aeth, 2017).
Your answer must refer to the case study and Smith Review (2016) findings and must also apply appropriate theories: Organisational culture e.g., Hofstede’s work, Power e.g. French and Raven’s power types; Political behaviour of managers e.g. characteristics of such behaviour. Consider the more negative aspects of what happened in the past at the BBC and how behaviour and culture can be changed for a better future.
The reading involves extracts from the Dame Janet Smith review of the BBC in 2016. Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 are provided as the basis of your reading.
The assignment should contain a minimum of the following elements:
- Introduction, in which you identify the OB aspects that need to be resolved (200 words)
- The OB theory needed to resolve issues (500 words combined)
- E.g., Leadership, Performance Management, Teams etc (400)
- The outcome if these instances are to remain (poor OB practice) (100 words)
- How you will implement the theory to resolve the scenario (300 words)
- What expectation do you have for the implementation (100 words)
- Conclusion identifying follow up (100 words)
