You will prepare and submit a term paper on Problem Solving and Improvement. Your paper should be a minimum of 750 words in length.
By drawing the sample of fifty cards, I did not get a defective deck since I did not pick any joker or king cards which were theoretically assigned the value of a defective card. Thus, it is my reasoned opinion and line of thought that the deck that I did chose from the shuffle of cards was not defective to that extent. The second draw that I with replacement has a defect since I got a king thereby meaning that the permutations that I did with the previous set of cards could not be repeated. This is to say that the cards that I drew on the second ruffle gave me a defective result since I got a king card which we theoretically assigned the value of a defective score or card.
I did not get 25% of each suit because the sample given which is 13 did not represent the whole population which is given as 52. There was variation in the number and types of cards selected resulting in less than 25% number of suits chosen. Therefore, about my sample, I have a bad deck since I am unable to choose a 25% number of suits. When using a single sample a proportion of 0.192 is obtained. For example, 10/52 gives as 0.192. Therefore, a single sample does not give a clear representation of the population since its proportion is less as compared to the population it represents.
Also, when comparing the average sample to a single sample, the average for the 10 samples gives a greater proportion than the single sample. On the other hand, the average sample gives a good representative of the whole population since its proportion is closer to the population. It is not possible to get 25% of each suit because the sample proportion is small. Also, when we repeat with 5 samples, the outcome will be the same. The conclusion is that it is difficult to get 25% of each suit when using fewer samples.
Therefore, the higher the number of samples used the higher the chances of getting 25% of each suit. 10/52 gives 0.1923 or 19.23%, 26/52 gives 0.5 or 50%, 51/52 gives 0.9808 or 98.08%

Oral History Interview Throughout the course, you have explored various aspects of culture and intercultural communication. To learn more about other people’s cultures and subcultures, conduct an extensive oral history interview with a person who is somewhat older than you and from a different culture or subgroup from you. This person can be a relative or acquaintance who is from a different generation. It can be someone who immigrated to this country either recently or some time ago. Or, it can be someone who belongs to a different subgroup from you and whose cultural experiences you believe would be very different from your own. Obtain permission from the person you are interviewing to record the conversation (either an audio or video recording) or to take handwritten notes during the interview. Your overarching goals during the oral history interview are To learn more about the culture and subcultures to which your interview subject belongs. To determine how their culture and gender have influenced the way they communicate with others. To discover what issues they have encountered in their life when engaging in intercultural communication. To relate concepts you have studied in this course to the experiences of this person. When conducting the interview, ask the interviewee at least six questions from this list (in addition to at least three questions you create specifically for your interviewee): How far back in time can the person remember? What is your interviewee’s first childhood memory? (Consider how it reflects the interview subject’s culture or subculture?) What does the person remember of the experience of being an immigrant or a subgroup member in that time? Which impressions or experiences from that time are most vivid to your interviewee today? If your interviewee immigrated to this country, what was the country of origin like in terms of geography, government, transportation, economic system, and education system? If your interviewee was raised in this country, what were these aspects of life like during childhood? What does the person recall of the communication with members of the dominant culture? What barriers to effective communication did your interviewee encounter? In the United States today, what is different about your interviewee’s life in terms of language, religion, family customs, diet, recreation, and work, as compared to childhood? What role did the news media play in the interview subject’s life and in supporting or contesting the views of the interview subject’s culture? How did the media influence the subject’s individual beliefs and opinions about males and females, masculinity and femininity, and other aspects of gender belief systems and views about race and ethnicity? (Cite specific examples given to you regarding these two specific issues.) If your interview subject spoke a different native language, ask your interviewee to discuss differences between that language and English (consider the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis). What are some of the most significant differences in day-to-day life in the past versus today? In addition, you must ask at least three original questions that are specifically tailored to the individual that you are interviewing. You should expect to spend at least 30 minutes interviewing your subject, but some interviews will go longer. Do not rush your interviewee! Give your subject the freedom to talk as long as possible in answering each of your questions. As part of this assignment, submit a copy of your interview. The following options are acceptable ways of submitting a copy of your interview: Submit an audio file of the interview to Waypoint. (If you use an audio file, please make sure you copy the link onto your Word document and then upload the document.) Submit a video file of the interview to Waypoint. (If you use a video or screencast, please make sure you copy the link onto a Word document and then upload the document.) Create a typed transcript of the interview and submit it as a separate document to Waypoint. Include in your Final Project a hyperlink to a website where the interview can be watched/heard. For your Final Project in this course, create a report of the oral history interview that you conducted. To create this report, review your recording of the interview and any notes you took during it, and write a 1,500- to 2,000-word paper (excluding the title and references pages), in which you discuss aspects of this person’s culture and/or subcultures and communication issues related to your interviewee’s cultural identity. In your paper Define the concept of intercultural communication. Explain what can be learned about intercultural communication by conducting an oral interview. Identify the name of the person you interviewed and their relationship to you. Create a thesis statement that previews the conclusions you reached as a result of conducting this interview. Describe the interview subject’s cultural background and the culture and/or subcultures to which your subject belongs. Analyze the interview subject’s answers to each of the questions you asked during your interview to connect the concepts covered in this course (do not simply provide a transcript of the interview subject’s answers). Conclude what you learned about intercultural communication as a result of conducting this oral history interview. Your paper should be written in paragraph form, not in a question and answer format. Thus, you must weave the information you present into a coherent narrative form, paraphrasing the information gleaned from the interview or using direct quotations from your interview subject, as appropriate. Your primary sources of information for this paper will be the interview subject. However, it is important that you also reference material you have studied in the text and other course resources to help support your analysis of your interview subject’s answers. Every chapter in the course text is potentially of relevance to the Final Project, depending on who you interview and what that person focuses on. Please note: If you received feedback from a Writing Center consultant on your draft from Week 3, please be sure to submit a second document describing, in one paragraph, how you revised your rough draft based on this feedback. This document will be in addition to your Final Project. This additional document describing your revisions based on the feedback you received from the Writing Center is evidence of enhancement of your draft and can raise your score for the final assignment, so be sure to submit it along with your Final Project if you have done this. Working with the Writing Center is highly recommended, but not required. Please note that if you are a Communications Studies major, this assignment will be an element in your graduation portfolio. If you have not set up your portfolio yet, you may do so by selecting Folio from the menu in your classroom on the left-hand side. If you have set up your portfolio, you can access it the same way. You will be working with your portfolio extensively in the Communications capstone course, COM480. If you are a Communications Studies major, please add this paper to your portfolio. Other students are not required to do this. View the Folio Quick Start Guide for guidance. For your reference, these are the elements that are required to be included in your portfolio: COM101 Week 1 assignment “Perspective on Communication” and Final Paper “Personal Communication Skills Assessment” COM223 Final Paper “Persuasive Campaign for Online Education” COM325 Final Paper COM345 Final Project COM355 Final Paper “The Future of Communication Technology” COM370 Week 1 assignment “Personal Cultural Profile” and Final Project “Oral History Interview” (This Paper) COM425 Final Paper SPE103 A speech of your choice from the class The Oral History Interview Final Project Must be at least 1,500 to 2000 words in length (not including title and references pages), double spaced, and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Writing Center. The Scholarly, Peer Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources table offers additional guidance on appropriate source types. If you have questions about whether a specific source is appropriate for this assignment, please contact your instructor. Your instructor has the final say about the appropriateness of a specific source for a particular assignment. Be sure to integrate your research rather than simply inserting it (see Integrating Research). Must include a conclusion that summarizes the main points and restates the thesis (see Introductions and Conclusions). Must document all sources in text in APA style as outlined in the Writing Center (see Citing Within Your Paper). Must include a separate references page that is formatted according to APA style as outlined in the Writing Center (see Formatting Your References List). Resource: Before you submit your written assignment, you are encouraged to review The Grammarly Guide: How to Set Up & Use Grammarly tutorial, set up a Grammarly account (if you have not already done so), and use Grammarly to review a rough draft of your assignment. Choose ONE of the following topics and write a polished essay of about 750 words (3-4 double spaced typed pages). The essay requires not less than two secondary sources in addition to your primary sources (the literature you are analyzing). Before writing your essay, reread your notes and assigned textbook reading(s) just to refresh your memory. Also, it might be useful to reread a composition textbook to remind yourself of the guidelines on how to write a clearly-defined thesis statement, well-developed paragraph(s), and an essay using the MLA or APA or Turabian parenthetical method of documentation for your quotations and any secondary sources you cite. To let your instructor know which style of documentation you are using, write MLA, APA, or Turabian in the title of your essay as follows: Title – Citation style (e.g., “Christians and the Study of Colonial American Literature-APA”).
Your two secondary sources should be academic, peer-reviewed sources, such as articles from scholarly journals and books. Websites, such as Lit Charts, Spark Notes, Shmoop, and so on are not academic sources. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, and other professors’ notes are likely accurate, but they are not academic research. You can cite our textbook in your paper, but it will not count toward your 2 secondary sources. If you have trouble finding scholarly sources, you can access the library’s English Research Guide here.
Develop a clear thesis that is grounded in the literature and specifies the titles of the literary works. Remember that while it is acceptable to include some biographical and historical information for context, your focus should be on analyzing the literature.
NOTE: To receive an excellent grade, a student must demonstrate a reasonable competence in organizing an essay on a set topic; developing ideas logically and systematically; supporting these ideas with the necessary evidence, quotations or examples; organizing a paragraph; documenting essays (using MLA, APA, or Turabian) style; spelling the commoner words of the English language correctly; punctuating correctly; and writing grammatical sentences, avoiding such common mistakes as comma splices, run-on sentences, sentence fragments, faulty agreements, faulty references, shifts in person, number, or tense.
1. Choose any ONE of the works/authors of the Colonial period studied in this course and write a literary analysis of the chosen work. The focus of the essay should be three-fold: to discuss the theme of the author/work, the major characteristics of the period that are evident in the work, and major narrative devices the author uses to communicate his or her message. Your essay must have a clearly-defined thesis statement, well-developed paragraph(s), and fitting conclusion. In your thesis, assert how the author uses narrative devices to convey the theme of the work and how the theme or narrative devices demonstrate major characteristics of the period. Include direct quotes from the primary sources for analysis and support.
2. William Bradford described the American wilderness as “hideous and desolate,” full of “wild beasts and wild men.” He believed the wilderness as a place of trial and testing rather than a place of ease and plenty – or of social and economic opportunity. Compare and contrast Bradford’s and John Smith’s views of the American wilderness. Why, in your opinion, will two pioneers perceive the land so differently? Include direct quotes from Bradford’s and Smith’s literature for analysis and support.
3. Compare and contrast John Smith, William Bradford, and John Winthrop as historians and as literary writers. Include direct quotes from the primary sources for analysis and support.
4. Bradstreet’s collection was published without her knowledge under the title The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung up in America or Several Poems, Compiled With a Great Variety of Wit and Learning, Full of Delight … By a Gentlewoman of Those Parts. Cite and discuss examples of 1) Great Variety / Themes2) Evidence of Learning and 3) Delightful subjects.
Do you find the poetry “delightful”? Explain your answer. Use at least three (3) poems to illustrate your points. Include direct quotes from Bradstreet’s poems for analysis and support.
5. Critically discuss the poetic idea of the divided self (body and soul) in Edward Taylor’s “A Fig for Thee oh! Death.” Also discuss this idea of the divided self (flesh and spirit) in Anne Bradstreet’s “The Flesh and the Spirit.” How is Bradstreet’s representation different from, or similar to that of Taylor’s? Include direct quotes from Taylor’s “A Fig for Thee oh! Death” and Bradstreet’s “The Flesh and Spirit” for analysis and support.
6. Critically discuss Bradstreet’s “To My Dear and Loving Husband” with Taylor’s “Huswifery” to demonstrate the contrasts and similarities between the two poets. Include direct quotes from Bradstreet’s “To My Dear and Loving Husband” and Taylor’s “Huswifery” for analysis and support.
7. Critically discuss Michael Wigglesworth’s “The Day of Doom” and Jonathan Edwards’s “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” as “salvific works” of literature. What literary and rhetorical strategies account for their wide popularity at the time? What factors, in your opinion, account for their diminished reputation in the 20th and 21st centuries? Include direct quotes from Wigglesworth’s “The Day of Doom” and Edwards’s “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” for analysis and support

The purpose of the Informative Essay assignment is to choose a job or task that you know how to do and then write 3 full pages Informative Essay teaching the reader how to do that job or task. You will follow the organization techniques explained in Unit 6
Here are the details:
1. Read the Lecture Notes in Unit 6. You may also find the information in Chapter 10.5 in our text on Process Analysis helpful. The lecture notes will really be the most important to read in writing this assignment. However, here is a link to that chapter that you may look at in addition to the lecture notes:
https://open.lib.umn.edu/writingforsuccess/chapter/10-5-process-analysis/ (Links to an external site.)
2. Choose your topic, that is, the job or task you want to teach. As the notes explain, this should be a job or task that you already know how to do, and it should be something you can do well. You may ask your instructor for advice if you have a difficult time finding a job or task to write on. Also, think at this point about your audience (reader). Will your reader need any knowledge or experience to do this job or task, or will you write these instructions for a general reader where no experience is required to perform the job.
3. Plan your outline to organize this essay. Unit 6 notes offer advice on this organization process. Be sure to include an introductory paragraph that has the four main points presented in the lecture notes (again, while your introduction has those main points, they don’t have to be in the order given in the lecture notes).
4. Write the essay. It will need to be at least 3 full pages long. You will use the MLA formatting that you used in previous essays from Units 3, 4, and 5
5. Be sure to include a title for your essay.
6. After writing the essay, be sure to take the time to read it several times for revision and editing. It would be helpful to have at least one other person proofread it as well before submitting the assignment
