Diversity and Fairness
In our course book, we learned several principles on diversity such as bias against diversity not being inevitable, diversity as a source of opportunity to learn, and respect as a way of promoting diversity, among many other principles (Jones, Dovidio & Vietze, 2013). The videos watched offered different conflicts that involved religion and the national interests or rather the laws of the country.
In the video regarding the move by the French government to ban female Muslim school children from wearing headscarf is not only against the freedom of expression but is also against the principle of inclusivity and integration. Though the government pointed that the move was meant to separate the state from the church, such a law will curtail the freedom of the minority Muslims in the country (Journeyman Pictures, 2015). In order to solve the conflict, it is of the opinion that the government retracts in its new laws and allows the Muslim girls to wear their religious attire in school. This would promote the integration among the Muslim girls and children from other religious backgrounds. In the second video Kim Davies the Kentucky county clerk was jailed for refusing to grant same-sex couples their marriage licenses (BBC News, 2015).
