Describing Quantitative Research Design
In quantitative research design, a deductive approach is used, where a statistical model and the data collected are employed in rejecting or accepting the research model (Courtney & McCutcheon, 2010). The paper proposes the study of efficacy of hourly rounding on the reduction of patient falls. The research question will be: “Will hourly rounding by nursing staff decrease falls in inpatient medical surgical units?” The research design that will be used in the study is ethnographic examination. This is appropriate because the study involves the study of the impact of hourly rounding on patient falls which requires lengthy examination of the proposed intervention.
In order to achieve a statistical power and avoid type II error, an appropriate sample size for each variable will be selected. This will involve the use of role of thumb using 10 participants for each variable or determining appropriate confidence level and using statistic solutions to calculate the sample size. The major threats of internal validity are random errors and bias (Siepmann et al., 2016). This can be reduced through randomization during participant selection and recruitment of participants that are large enough according to the power analysis that is done prior to the study. External validity will be enhanced by clearly determining the selection and inclusion criteria. Randomization will be used because it allows for generalization of findings as it enhances internal validity. It also enhances external validity since it ensures appropriate sample is selected thus avoiding possibility of including participants who may have other confounding factors. The major method of data collection will be through patient medical data from the hospital. In order to avoid bias so as to enhance reliability……………………………………………………………………………………………………
