Then, address the following: Identify the work and the medium. Based on your example, to what extent does this work of controversial art make a social contribution? Consisting of a 60 by 40-inch Cibachrome print of plastic and wood crucifix floating in bubbly bright yellow liquid, the Pissi Christ was the first work of immersions series (Jones, 2001). Serrano developed artistic impressions using fluids as pigments. The controversial art provides criticism of the cheapening of the Christian belief of the Holy crucifix and the people who use the words of Christ to suit their bad ways.
The print art used color contrast to create a good aesthetic appeal among its viewers. The artwork reflects the changing levels of human perception and beliefs towards Christianity. As a Christian, art relates to my perception of the way people practice the Christian religion. Reading past Christian practices and present experiences show marked differences, which was the intention Serrano wanted to achieve before criticism.
Although Serrano had a different intention when his work was presented for display, it attracted many critics. Jones (2001) points out that Piss Christ and other works of Serrano such as Stigmata were censored. The censorship of the art was considered not artistic but dishonor to the Lord. Responsible criticism of art is to create full understanding and participation (Jacobus & Martin, 2019). However, criticism of Piss Christ became political and did not consider the actual intention to which the art was created. When the criticism reached the floor of the Senate, Senator D’Amato termed it as “a deplorable and despicable vulgarity (p. 2192).” The government can be justified or not to censor art, but this should be based on the artistic impression that was intended from the art.
