During the 20th century, the United States was struggling with infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, pneumonia and yellow fever (CDC, 2009). However, as the country became successful in treating such diseases, through prevention, isolation and immunization, homicide and suicide begun to escalate and became one of the top causes of death among youths. Most of the infectious diseases were treated through immunization and behavioral interventions. The increased acceptance of etiology and prevention of diseases in public health convinced the public health professionals that the same success could be attained in prevention of interpersonal violence and suicidal behavior.
