Option #1: Routines Activity Theory

Overview: This option will allow you to explore factors that are associated with Routines Activity Theory.

According to Routine Activities Theoryvictimization occurs due to the following reasons:

1. The availability of  suitable targets, such as an unlocked car;

2. The absence of capable guardians, such as a corner of a store without any cameras;

3. And, finally, the presence of motivated offenders, such as an experienced burglar or shoplifter in the need of cash or items (Siegel 2011).

Moreover, out in the real world, you can see this theory actualized throughout the many public places we visit and experience on a daily basis.

Task #1 Instructions:

1. Throughout this week, try to keep an eye out for two of the three factors needed for victimization to occur: The availability of suitable targets and the absence of capable guardians. When you notice these concepts from Routine Activities Theory occurring, take a quick picture if possible (always avoid it if it could possibly lead to you getting in trouble or put you in a dangerous situation). Alternatively, you may also conduct virtual research and find the images online. However, please make sure the images are not obscene or vulgar. 

2. Regardless if you take your own photos or find them online, attach the photos to your main post by embedding them in your main post.

3. Create a main post describing what you saw and explain how it is an example Routine Activities Theory. You must include the terms suitable target and capable guardians in your main post. These terms should be applied correctly based on our course material. Include your photos for these two concepts in your main post.

4. Although I am not having you find images for motivated offenders because there is an element of assumption here, you should still define what this concept means and briefly describe predatory behaviors that would elicit a motivated offender.

5. Define victimology and describe who was victimized in your chosen Routine Activities Theory photo example.

Note: Due to the sensitive topics of rape, sexual assault, and other forms of victimization, if you are sensitive to said topics, then I encourage you to select Option #1 instead or skip this week’s discussion (if you have a free skip).

Overview: Select one theory from the victimology chapter of your choice and research one recent example.

Task #1 Instructions: Locate a recent news story that relates to one of the theories covered in chapter 3 in some way and write a main post in which you apply and define two concepts and one theory from chapter 3 to the news article under investigation.

Two major historians, Howard Zinn and Larry Schweikart, have written popular books on American history containing very different historical interpretations of the same events. Explore this interactive resource on Zinn and Schweikart to learn about their different personal assumptions, beliefs, and values that might influence how each historian interprets historical events and might introduce bias into their writing.

Zinn, H. (2010). A people’s history of the United States. New York, NY: Harper Perennial. “To emphasize the heroism of Columbus and his successors as navigators and discoverers, and to de-emphasize their genocide, is not a technical necessity but an ideological choice. It serves—unwittingly—to justify what was done.

My point is not that we must, in telling history, accuse, judge, condemn Columbus in absentia. It is too late for that; it would be a useless scholarly exercise in morality. But the easy acceptance of atrocities as a deplorable but necessary price to pay for progress (Hiroshima and Vietnam, to save Western civilization; Kronstadt and Hungary, to save socialism; nuclear proliferation, to save us all)—that is still with us. One reason these atrocities are still with us is that we have learned to bury them in a mass of other facts, as radioactive wastes are buried in containers in the earth. We have learned to give them exactly the same proportion of attention that teachers and writers often give them in the most respectable of classrooms and textbooks. This learned sense of moral proportion, coming from the apparent objectivity of the scholar, is accepted more easily than when it comes from politicians at press conferences. It is therefore more deadly.” (p. 9)

New York, NY: Sentinel. “The five‐hundred‐year anniversary of Columbus’s discovery was marked by unusual and strident controversy. Rising up to challenge the intrepid voyager’s courage and vision—as well as the establishment of European civilization in the New World—was a crescendo of damnation, which posited that the Genoese navigator was a mass murderer akin to Adolf Hitler.

Even the establishment of European outposts was, according to the revisionist critique, a regrettable development. Although this division of interpretations no doubt confused and dampened many a Columbian festival in 1992, it also elicited a most intriguing historical debate: did the esteemed Admiral of the Ocean Sea kill almost all the Indians? A number of recent scholarly studies have dispelled or at least substantially modified many of the numbers generated by the anti‐Columbus groups, although other new research has actually increased them.” (pp. 7–8)

The two appears to represent two extreme sectors of the historical spectrum. In many cases, their historical assumptions, beliefs, and values have significant differences. Howard Zinn in his writings assumed that the now-radicalized public of the 1960s was dissatisfied with the ancient history and he thought that modern history was long awaited. This means that he felt that there was a need for a modern take in history. He thought that there was a need for such things as modern people, women, Native Americans, and black people. Zinn felt that there was a need for including these topics in his writings and I feel that these issues had not been included in any book before his writings. Schweikart, on the other hand, defends his utterances by laying an attack on the more liberal historians, for example, Howard Zinn.   His beliefs and assumptions are more liberal and patriotic. His works are more biased, and they are filled with different techniques so that they can obscure the views of unsuspecting students.

I can feel that the differences in their views and personal assumptions is that  Zinn is portrayed as the more controversial one who has personal convictions on social justice plus accountability while Schweikart is a patriotic historian who has personal conviction in patriotism. The major differences are based on the distinctions they had on their historical interpretations from different individual experiences. Howard Zinn indicates that the repercussions of these omissions have not been merely to give a skewed view of the past. The purpose of this assignment is for you to continue working on  elements that will become part of your Community Center Proposal Final  Project. This week you will be creating three activities that address  cognitive development in the age groups assigned. These will become part  of the infant room, early childhood room, and adolescent room of your  center.

Using Piaget’s, Vygotsy’s, and/or Information processing theories of  cognitive development, you will continue to build your Community Center  Proposal by identifying activities for the assigned rooms that promotes  cognitive development for children and adolescents. The activity must be  focused on the cognitive milestones of the age group and must be  clearly tied to specific theory. You must use at least one credible  source.  Your activities might be focused on object permanence for  infants, conservation, egocentrism, or conservation for early childhood,  or deductive reasoning for adolescence. Table 7.1 in your textbook will  be useful in completing this activity.

Focus on the primary developmental tasks of each age period. For each  of the three activities, write a paragraph that addresses the  following:

  • Describe the activity in some detail (provide more than just the name of the activity).
  • Identify the specific concept from cognitive development theory that supports the use of this activity.
  • Identify how the activity enhances cognitive development in the specific age group.

Here are two examples providing you a model of how to approach this  assignment and how to build the elements of the rooms in your community  center.

Examples of Activities:

Example 1: Cognitive Development Activity for Infant Room: Peekaboo. 

One of the activities we will incorporate into the infant room is  peekaboo. This is a game where the caregiver hides himself from the  child (covering the child’s eyes or hiding behind a chair, etc.) and  then appears again by uncovering the child’s eyes or coming out from  behind the chair. Another variation of this would be hiding a treasured  object under a scarf and then revealing it again. One of the milestones  of the first year of life is the development of object permanence.  Object permanence occurs when an infant grasps that something (an  object, a person) still exists even when the infant cannot see it. This  is a concept from Piaget’s theory of cognitive development and is one of  the developmental tasks of the sensorimotor stage. Newborns do not have  a sense of permanence. When they cannot see you, you do not exist for  them. During the first year of life, they slowing learn that objects and  people continue to exist even with they cannot be seen (Mossler, 2014).  Playing peekaboo is one way to foster the development of object  permanence. Infants usually delight in seeing someone appear and then  hide, only to reappear. This activity will support the cognitive  development domain and also the psychosocial domain because of its  interactive nature.

Example 2: Cognitive Development Activity for Adolescent Room: Board Games Involving Strategy and Problem Solving. 

In the adolescent room, we propose having a collection of board games  that require logical thinking and problem solving. Adolescence is the  beginning of more sophisticated thinking. Children in this age group  move from concrete operations to what Piaget calls formal operations.  They are becoming capable of deductive and hypothetical reasoning  (Mossler, 2014). Games like chess, Battleship, and checkers all require  players to engage in this kind of thinking. Another game that can be  used is the game of Clue. This game supports the development of  prepositional logic and requires players to think hypothetically  (Neller, Markov, and Russell, 2006). These games will not only promote  cognitive development but will further support psychosocial development  because of the required interactions.
