Air Canada has four competitors. They comprise WestJet, United Airlines, Lufthansa and American Airlines.

The External Environment

Competitor analysis

Air Canada has four competitors. They comprise WestJet, United Airlines, Lufthansa and American Airlines. Calin Rovinescu, the CEO is rated at 80% taking the 1st position. The CEOs of United Airlines and WestJet have a rating of 73%. The CEO of United Airlines takes the second position as his rating is from 173 employees while that of WestJet is from 28 employees. In form of quality of products, Air Canada takes the 2nd position due to a score of 3.7 out of 5 by 11 clients (Leppäjärvi,2018). WestJet takes the first position with a score of 4 out of 5. In form of a net promotion score, Air Canada takes the first position. It is ranked at 67% by 12 customers. Net promotion tracks the score of customers based on how likely they can refer a friend to a particular company. In net promotion, American Airlines takes the 2nd position with 26%. In pricing, Air Canada takes the first position with a score of 4.3 out of 5. The second position is taken by WestJet which has 3.7 out of 5. In form of its service to customers, Air Canada is ranked at 1st position with a score of 4.2 out of 5. WestJet takes the 2nd position with a score of 3.9. The performance of Air Canada can also be assessed from culture scores. Culture scores are attained from all the questions answered relating to a company in comparison to competitors. Air Canada takes the first position in culture score with an 86% score. The 2nd position is taken by WestJet with 75%. In form of employee net promotion, Air Canada takes the 1st position with a score of 67% followed by United Airlines which takes the 2nd position with a score of 15 percent. Employee net promotion involves scoring employees based on how employees are likely to refer a friend to work in a certain company.

Air Canada offers less expensive and the best premium products. It also offers the correct transit programs at critical airports. These make Air Canada suitable to attract transit customers. The firm has a subsequent worldwide champion and core elements which comprise expense reductions, profitable revenue initiatives, enabling product differentiation and cultural change. The company has enhanced effective operation with leisure customers traveling to and from Canada. These investing strategies have made the airline gain a competitive advantage.

Market analysis

Air Canada carries many passengers each year. Income elasticity in Air Canada is less than 1. Barriers to entry in Canadian Airlines are very high. The wide geographical region and sparse population have a very low demand for flights. The high fees and taxes of Canada reduce the competition of prices (Case & Jones,2018). This makes Air Canada capable of pricing new clients from the aviation market. Everchanging seasonal demand further makes it hard for new firms to survive in the market. Air Canada became the first airline to ban smoking on any flights. This has ever led to free socialization during flights. In Air Canada, the risks and opportunities are external factors. As per SWOT analysis, the risks comprise government restrictions, foreign currency fluctuations and low-cost carriers. Its opportunities comprise flourishing tourism in Canada, the launch of low-cost airlines and great penetration into the worldwide market by worldwide brand understanding.

Environmental analysis

The regulation put in place by the Canadian government requires Air Canada to follow all set Covid-19 guidelines. This has made Air Canada incur losses as some people planning to travel for leisure have ended up canceling their travel plans. The firm has lost a lot of money which could have been got in the present. Fluctuation of currency and ongoing inflation have made Air Canada plan to raise fares to offset the ongoing inflation(Shi & Li,2021). This will make the company lose some customers who cannot comprehend the impact of inflation and how it can be canceled. Air Canada is impacted by various political factors such as high fees, high taxes and substantial restrictions on foreign ownership of Canadian airlines. These political factors make it hard to start an airline in Canada. Rogue provides unique culture to customers. The end of smoking welcomed customers from different beliefs. Christianity is against smoking.

Findings

From the assessments, Air Canada leads in almost all aspects. It leads in CEO score, net promotion, pricing, customer service, culture score and employee promotion. It is only defeated by WestJet in product quality but the difference between the two is just 0.3. WestJet has 4 out of 5 whereas Air Canada has a ranking of 3.7 out of 5. This means Air Canada is far more successful in form of its performance when compared to competitors. It leads in all aspects apart from product quality. Even in product quality, it is surpassed by only 0.3. Government regulation and currency fluctuation are key issues as it is found in risks and economic determinants facing the company.

From 2018 to 2019, we have witnessed two crashes of Lion Air Flight 610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, resulting in 346 deaths. Both crashed jets were Boeing 737 Max, a minor upgrade of the best-selling fleet Boeing’s 737 designed in the 1960s. The crashes were attributed to the malfunction of the maneuvering characteristics augmentation system (MCAS). It was a stopgap measure designed to compensate for an anomaly that resulted from the mismatch between the outdated 737 platform and a larger new engine. Boeing could save billions of dollars in engineering costs by basing the Max off of the existing platform.

The 737 Max was reportedly rushed to the market in the face of the existential threat from the A320neo. Boeing’s 737 and Airbus’ A320 are the two main players in the massively profitable market for narrow-body passenger jets. Both manufacturers are locked in a race to make their airplanes cheaper for airlines to operate.

To fix the anomaly would trigger additional manufacturing costs, regulatory approval, and loss of orders. Instead, Boeing deployed representatives around the world to shore up confidence in the Max after the first Lion Air crash. Between November 2018 and March 2019, Boeing announced new orders from multiple airlines, and it even managed to talk Lion Air out of canceling its $5 billion order.

After the Ethiopian Airlines crash, regulators around the world began to ground the airplane. The United States didn’t follow suit, however, and was the last country to ground 737 Max. Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg reportedly called President Trump to assure him that the 737 Max was safe to fly. The company was also reportedly a major political force in Washington and a large US government contractor. It spent about $15 million on lobbying in 2018 and took in over $23 billion in government contracts in the 2017 (the second largest government contractor in the US).

a. What assumptions of capitalism has been manifested in the 737 Max case? Pick any three assumptions of capitalism discussed in the course and explain how they help to understand the case. (500 words max)

b. How are the debates around CSR, shareholders/stakeholder, short-term/long-term, and corporate power reflected in this case? Pick any two debates discussed in the course and describe in detail how they are relevant to this case. (750 words max)

c. Could something like this happen again? What measures can be taken to prevent it? Use measures/approaches discussed in the course to support your argument. (500 words max)

Give a brief summary of the current state of union relations in the airlines industry in the United States. Then answer the following in a well-organized 4 page paper:
•    If DeMaura is correct in his editorial, why would the American Airlines’ Allied Pilots Association (APA) risk the future of American Airlines with their union demands?
•    Using additional research about unionization in the U.S. airline industry in general and American Airlines in particular, update where we are currently with American’s situation. How do the recent updates that you have found affect American Airlines employees? Are other U.S. airlines also in jeopardy because of labor demands?
•    In your educated opinion (supported by your research) are changes needed in labor laws in the United States to help stop unions from hurting business?
Use at least 5 Trident Online Library sources plus any applicable background readings to help strengthen your discussion.

Labor unions and the airlines industry in the United States

United States airlines are currently enjoying a boom due to streamlining over the past few years, streamlining that included mergers and acquisitions. The streamlining was because of many carriers going bankrupt in the last decade, a situation that was attributed to generous base pay rates and work rules negotiated by the unions as a result of previous good profits. The current boom is also tempered by fractious labor relations between the airlines and staff. Delta Airlines suffered from their pilots picketing in 2016. Southwest pushed back purchase of new airplanes partly because of tensions with its pilots. This is despite the two airlines having a history of good labor relations where they have awarded good remuneration to their workers, relations that have made them some of the most financially successful airlines in the world(Bhaskara, 2016).

However, there were gains in the same year as three-year contentious negotiations between ULCC Allegiant Air and its pilots ended in mid-2016, with the pilots getting hefty pay rises and the airline’s safety record consequently improving (Bhaskara, 2016). United Airlines also reached agreements with its pilots and flight attendants, with the flight attendants getting a combined contract after six years of being treated as two separate workgroups following the merger of United and Continental.

After going bankrupt in 2011, American Airlines was forced into a merger with the smaller US Airways in 2013. The airline unions backed Doug Parker, the then CEO of US Airways, to become the CEO of the new American Airlines, forcing the management of the earlier company out(Koenig, 2017). Since then, the Allied Pilots Association (APA) and the flight attendants union have been in constant negotiation with the airline for better pay and working conditions.

Risks

APA risks the future of American Airlines with their union demands because they offer the company little or no flexibility in adjusting their costs to suit the market situation (DeMaura, 2012). In times of recession, the airline still has to pay high wages which becomes a weakness in the competitive landscape. The risk is exacerbated by fluctuations in oil prices that make continuity of profitability uncertain. Hence pay rates that are gained during times when prices of fuel are low become unsustainable when the ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….fuel………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
