Analyze a security breach that has occurred in the recent past (within the last three years). In your critical evaluation of the chosen security breach, review and analyze the breach along the following dimensions: 

  1. What went wrong?
  2. Why did it occur?
  3. Who was responsible?

Your paper should meet the following requirements:

  • Be 3 pages in length, not including the title page and reference page.
  • Follow APA guidelines. Your paper should include an introduction, a body with fully developed content, and a conclusion.
  • Support your answers with the readings from the course and at least four scholarly journal articles.
  • Cite a minimum of six scholarly sources—academic and peer-reviewed—to support your positions, claims, and observations.
  • Be clear and well written, concise, and logical, using excellent grammar and style techniques. 

PORTFOLIO MILESTONE ONE

There was a security breach on Facebook in 2019 discovered in 2021. This security breach was about cybercriminals who breached the Facebook database and accessed the phone numbers of 533 million users with their ID numbers, names, emails, and birthdays. The hackers had exposed the database to the members of the public, and they did this for almost three years. The breach was realized in 2021 by a cyber security firm. The criminals could access personal information each and every time they wanted because they had all the details to log into those accounts. The hackers obtained data from Facebook servers by using a misconfigured phone importer. These criminals could use the asses to commit more crimes using accounts that belonged to other individuals and went unnoticed. Most Facebook users were affected by the problem of their accounts being hacked during this period. They were in control of these accounts and regulated what happened (Choi., 2021).    Most security breaches occur as a result of vulnerability or exposure to databases. There might have existed a loophole to security on Facebook that was identified by these hackers and exploited to access the Facebook servers. Poor management of passwords might have given these criminals access to the servers, thus hacking many accounts (Finnerty et al., 2019). 

The problem is that Facebook cyber security did not realize this for three years, and rather an external firm identified this. This shows that the organization was reckless in maintaining and regularly checking its servers and databases. It is the role of the relevant organization to maintain secure passwords to servers and ensure that their databases are not exposed to criminals. All loopholes that can lead to security attacks should be closed and continually monitored to avoid the loss of relevant data and information within an organization. Misconfigured settings on software, password recycling, and vulnerabilities in software could all lead to a security breach. If an organization does not secure its networks, data, applications, and network, it could be at risk of being attacked. Criminals exploit the weaknesses of an organization to access its information. They exploit systems that might not be updated, thus stealing relevant information. In any organization, it should be ensured that only a few people are aware and can access the passwords because this will reduce the chances of being exposed to risks. If many people can access the server, there might be one who will expose the organization either willingly or unwillingly. The reason why Facebook cyber security agents took so long to realize that their account had been hacked was that many individuals within the organization could access the data, and therefore the chances of noticing were very high, thus increasing the risk (Reshmi., 2021).   

In conclusion, to avoid security breaches, one needs to keep on changing their passwords, back up the files regularly, use strong passwords, secure the computers and avoid leaking the information and passwords to the public. If all the loopholes within an organization are covered, information vulnerability is reduced. Reducing the vulnerability of data, passwords, and devices reduces the risks of being attacked by criminals. The Facebook security agents configured its security details again to minimize this issue because they were attacked because of misconfiguration. They made strong security passwords and backed up all the files hacked. The attack was so big and happened for a long time because they failed to check their servers and databases regularly. The risk within an institution can be managed by checking the security details, including the passwords and all other loopholes oftenly and managing them. Everyone within an organization has to be responsible for the organization’s security at all times (Tuttle., 2018).

Purpose:

This project is to help you apply concepts to real world, real data analysis. In the real world computers do most of the hard work for statisticians.  This project will help you understand how an informative decision is made using data analysis.  After completing this project, you should be able to determine which statistical procedures are appropriate; and use StatCrunch to carry out the procedures and interpret the output.

Directions:

  • In an article in the Journal of Statistics Education (vol. , no 2), Allen Shoemaker describes a study that was reported in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA). It is generally accepted that the mean temperature of an adult human is 98.6°F. In his article, Shoemaker uses the data from the JAMA article to test his hypothesis. The data for the JAMA article were collected from healthy men and women, ages 18 to 40, at the University of Maryland Center for Vaccine Development, Baltimore. [Elementary Statistics: Picturing the World by Ron Larson and Betsy Farber 7th Ed.]
  • Data: Click on “StatCrunch” on MyLab Statistics, then “Data sets from the textbook”. Scroll down to Chapter 7, then click on Chapter 7: Case Study: Human Body Temperature: What’s Normal?

Do all of the work below with the “Women” data set  Download “Women” data set.

  • Use a statistical software package to complete the analysis of Exploratory Data Analysis and Inferential Statistics. You are strongly encouraged to use StatCrunch (in MyLab Statistics).  You may also use any other software packages (s.a. MINITAB, or SPSS). However, if you use other software, you are on your own, for your instructor will only help with question with regards to StatCrunch.

A) Exploratory Data Analysis

  1. Construct a stem and leaf display.
  2. Construct a histogram.
  3. Construct a boxplot and use it to investigate the data for outliers.
  4. Obtain the sample mean, median, mode, and standard deviation.

B) Inferential Statistics

  1. Construct a normal probability plot or quantile-quantile (QQ) plot to assess normality. Use this assessment to determine which tests are appropriate for these data for confidence interval and test of hypothesis as you will use these procedures for parts 2 and 3 below.
  2. Construct a 95% confidence interval for µ, for mean body temperature for all adult females in the population.
  3. At the 5% significance level, do the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that the mean body temperature of women is 98.6°F?
  4. Using the software output, perform the confidence interval and the full hypothesis test.
  • Write a summary and findings of the project

C) Write-up

  • Write a brief introduction of the project.
  • Interpret the mean, and standard deviation in context of the data given.
  • Compare the measures of center and comment on which measure of center would best describe the data given.
  • Comment on the shape of the distribution.
  • Are there any outliers in the data? Include results of your investigation for outliers.
  • Comment on your assessment of normality.
  • Which test will be most appropriate for the inferential statistics? Z-test or t-test? Why?
  • Write an interpretation for the confidence interval estimate in context of the data.
  • State the hypothesis (the null and the alternative)
  • State the conclusion and summary of the significance test and interpret the p-value using the context of the data.
  • Compare the results from the confidence interval and the significance test. Are they the same? Why do think this is the case?
  • Submit your project as an attachment via the link above using the following format in a Microsoft Word or pdf document
    • First page – Title page including your name, course number, and section number
    • Second page – Write – up (See Part C)
    • Final pages – Statistical Software Output and Additional Work (See Parts A and B)

Note:

  1. You must use complete sentences and correct grammar/spelling.
  2. Use StatCrunch to generate tables and graphs for analysis.

    A. Instructions

    Choose one of the following prompts for your informative essay.

    PROMPT A: IMAGE ANALYSIS: Although we look at print advertisements every day, we often do not consider the ways in which they affect us. Visual images in ads can influence and persuade us, so it is important to evaluate them critically to understand their meanings. Good image analysis involves examination of the components of an image to gain an understanding of the whole.

    Select an advertisement to analyze. The advertisement you choose should be directed towards a specific audience. To identify the intended audience, think about the members of the potential audience for the advertisement that you have chosen. Who are they? Ads for a beauty product, for example, may be aimed at young girls; ads for a deodorant might target men; a diaper commercial is likely intended for new parents; ads for cruise trips might be aimed at retirees. You can use any academically-appropriate advertisement to complete this assignment, as long as its intended audience is clearly identified.

    Your thesis must inform the reader of your topic and purpose. Because you are writing in the informative mode, use objective language and a neutral point of view.

    Draft an analytical essay that examines the audience, context, and purpose of the advertising image you’ve chosen. Read the article by Jenna Pack titled “Breaking Down an Image” found in the “Model Informative Essays” tutorial for ideas about how to write an image analysis. Your analysis should lead to a conclusion about the ad’s effectiveness, based on examination of its components. Include the image with your draft.

    PROMPT B: EXTENDED DEFINITION: Define or redefine one of the following words:
