Importance of Understanding Basic Workflow of EHRs
The electronic health records (EHRs) are now an important component of the health care system. As a critical component of the health care system, it is important that the registered nurses and physicians to develop an understanding of the basic workflow of EHRs. Vehko et al. (2019) points out that the registered nurses (RNs) constitute the largest group of the health care workers. The authors point out that the experiences and informatics competences of the RNs play an important role in fluent workflow. When registered nurses have an understanding of the basic workflow of the EHRs, they are able ensure a smooth working and contribute to increased patient outcomes. The understanding and the quantification of the workflows allows the registered nurses to identify and bring into light any bottlenecks in the EHRs system (Pugh, 2019). Also, through the understanding of the EHRs workflow, nurses are able to advocate for system changes based on the identified inefficiencies and bottlenecks.
The development of an understanding of the EHRs workflow is going to influence my work as a health care manager in many ways. First, it is going to increase the appreciation of the role that EHRs play in improvement of patient outcomes. A good understanding of the EHRs workflow allows one to understand how EHRs works and its influences on health care such as increased efficiencies and patient outcomes. Secondly, understanding of the EHRs will be critical in implementation of information technology in storage of patient information. Since the inception of the EHRs, not all heath care systems have adopted them fully (Pugh, 2019). Developing its understanding is important in future implementation of EHRs in management of patient information. Finally as a health care manager, understanding the EHRs will play an important role in identification of major areas of improvements and implementing appropriate system changes.
