GDP: Measuring What Counts for Economic and Social Performance. Stiglitz believes that measuring a nation’s well-being should go beyond GDP because it focuses on materialistic things rather than people’s health and overall well-being. He discusses how some people are more privileged than others and how some people start at the bottom and don’t have a chance to put themselves in a better situation. Policies and societal norms that highlight our nation’s emphasis on factors of production or consumption consist of labor market reforms in which companies force workers to work and work hard for minimum so that they will be able to receive their pension. Most states and jobs are at will and can fire an employee at any time, which causes insecurities, makes workers conform to their jobs, and gives employers the chance to toy with workers. The article states, “If we want to put people first, we have to know what matters to them, what improves their wellbeing, and how we can supply more of whatever that is.” Steps that can be taken at the local and national levels to emphasize outcomes would be to offer free health insurance to everyone, lower healthcare costs, lower prices of healthy foods, and raise the cost of fast foods. Another thing that can be done education-wise is monitoring school systems to ensure that they are using state and federal money for learning purposes. Encourage parents to start at home with their kids so that they know that education is important. Companies should become greener; we should recycle more and try to become minimalist instead of buying and using unnecessary things and throwing them away in waste and destroying the environment.
Hebrews 12:14 (King James Version) states, “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.” A life of peace is better than being in the storm fighting with others. God loves us all. God wants us always to do what is right and help one another out. No one should consider themselves better than the next person or always in competition. That isn’t peace; the way to God’s heart is polite, generous, and willing to help others.

In this article, we learned about the gross domestic product, which is known as GDP. GDP can be described as monetary value of all finished and services made within a place during a specific time. GDP is not a good measure of well being as mentioned in the article. It is believed that if we measure the wrong things then we will do the wrong thing. This is the reason Stiglitz believed that the nation’s well being should be measured beyond GDP. The information received from GDP was not very accurate. The information did help provide ways to help the well-being of the population. Production and consumption would not exist without one another. People believed that the GDP did not have data that would benefit economic production such as health, environment, and education. These areas needed to be focused on in order for the economy to thrive.
There are various steps that can be taken at the local and national levels to put emphasis on outcomes such as health, education, and the environment. A step that can be made in the health category is create more resources for mental health. There are more people being reported who are suffering from mental health issues. There are people who are seeking assistance, but some people cannot receive assistance. The reason is people do not always have the resources. If more resources are provided to people who have not been able to receive them, this would benefit the population more. For education, there could be more resources created such as more places that provide after school assistance to help with homework or other school related activities. There are different places that are available, but many parents do not have the funds that would allow their children to attend. Some places are not available in the area closes to the child. In order to help the environment, we can have community clean ups on a regular basis. There is so much trash that is polluting the environment that is harming the planet, people, animals etc.
A scripture that is related to the topic is Proverbs 19:17 which states.” Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will repay him for his deed.” This article informed us on how the GDP was not focused on the well being of others. This scripture explains how if someone is helps the poor or anyone that they will be blessed in return. Just as Stiglitz wanted to focus more on creating ways to assist with putting people first. In return, God will bless him for his great deed

For this assignment you will apply the knowledge you’ve gained from reading and discussing Dorothy Roberts’ Fatal Invention to a contemporary issue found in traditional written news outlets (e.g., newspapers and magazines) or the blogosphere. Select an instance where the myth of the biological concept of race is being used in medicine/pharmacy, ancestry testing, or criminal justice and write a 2-3 page paper that includes the following: 1. Describe (contextualize) the issue: What incident took/is taking place? Where and when did it happen? Who are the parties involved? Where did you first come across this event/incident? (cite using the proper in-text APA formatting and include in bibliography) 2. Digging deeper into the use of science: Explain how science is being used to justify what happened. Using what you’ve learned from the Roberts book, critique the logic and reasoning of those defining race as a biological concept. Where are they going wrong? 3. Those who benefit and those who suffer: Who benefits from science being used in this way? How? Think about both immediate and long-term benefits. What are the potential detrimental effects of using science in this way? Why? Think about both immediate and long-term consequences. Does this issue relate to any specific fights for social justice? 4. Personal reflection: How is the issue related to your life, experiences, feelings and ideas? For instance, what emotions did exploring this topic arouse in you? You must include a bibliography.
The spirometer is used to measure lung capacity among people. It has implications on clinical diagnoses, disability measurements and pre-employment medical analysis. However, the spirometer has embedded internal corrections to show that blacks have a lower lung capacity, leading to implicit discrimination in diagnosis, self-awareness and employment.
Still widely used today, the spirometer can be traced to a study by Benjamin A Gould in the 19th century to quantify the bodies of Union borders soldiers after the American Civil War. As discussed by Shaban (2014), the study showed that blacks have an inherent biological deficiency of having lower lung capacity.
2. Scientific justification
Following Gould’s study, a scientific consensus that whites have higher lung capacity emerged and was developed over the next few decades. While Gould’s study was quantitative and looked accurate and objective, he did not offer explanations for his findings. But due to politics, Gould’s study was preferred to other more accurate, qualitative studies such as those of Jedidiah H Baxter, Kelly Miller and WB Du Bois. The blind acceptance of Gould’s findings led to a spirometer that has inbuilt correctional facility triggered by the required racial identification. The spirometer design and production is hence based on beliefs and values rather than empirical scientific research.
The spirometer negates studies of the human genome that show there are more differences in genetic makeup within a race than across races. Most genetic differences are hence a result of individual personality and characteristics rather than race. The studies that attribute racial differences in lung capacity further ignore environmental and economic factors. It has been established that people who live in highly polluted areas have lower lung capacity, the abode for many of the traditionally economically deprive who constitute many blacks.
3. Consequences
The spirometer validates race biologically, leading to misdiagnosis of people based on the sociological construction of race. In the short-term it denies those perceived as black opportunities enabled by accurate measurement of their lung capacity, such as employment opportunities. The benefactors are the whites who are seen as having better lung capacities.
The lack of opportunities for blacks affects their livelihoods such as diet and health. It also increases crime rate among the group as the deprived try to uplift their lot in all ways possible despite the employment rejection. By wrongly labeling people as disabled due to incorrect spirometer measurement, it also lowers the people’s self-esteem. In the long-term, it affects their economic situation by lowering the earning potential. Further, it affects their life expectancy, leading to passing on of economic struggles to their dependents and subsequent generations.
4. Reflections
The spirometer has led to stereotyping of many blacks as unworthy of employment and susceptible to being criminals. The consequences have been that various security agencies such as some police departments racially profile the afflicted, leading to unnecessary deaths and tension in the community and society. Tension is further escalated by the sense………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

The company that was discussed in this scholarly activity was Facebook which continues to attract a lot of criticism to date. The first criticism that Mark Zuckerberg was the ethical issue when students they were working with Zuckerberg on similar project accused him of using their concept to develop Facebook. According to Boyd (2019), “Zuckerberg had previously worked on a similar project with fellow students: Cameron, Tyler Winklevoss, and DivyaNarenda all then students at Havard University. He quit to do this thing, The Facebook. But his ex-collaborators say he stole their concept and ideas and they wanted to be compensated.” This is evident that the ethical issues about who’s ideal and concept was used to create Facebook emerged even before it was global phenomenon. This ethical issue has continued to hurt Facebooks in regards to decision making.
Background of Facebook
The initial focus of the founders of Facebook was to serve college students, but by the end of 2004, its membership had grown substantially. As a result, Facebook shifted its operations to California and more investors were brought in including the co-founder PayPal. Being Muslim in America: The story of Imane Boudlal
Discriminatory employment practices can be influenced by certain societal factors such as national culture. National cultures varies between countries and have been categorized according to Hofstede’s cultural dimensions such as power distance, uncertainty avoidance, collectivism and individualism, masculinity, indulgence and long-term orientation. Buckley, Halbesleben & Wheeler, (2016, pp. 122) defines power distance as value which differentiates individuals, groups, organizations and nations in regard with the degree to which inequality can be accepted as unavoidable or functional. The extent to which organizations are embedded in culture characterized by high power distance are more prone to instances of gender discriminations. In the case of Imane Boudlal (CAIRtv, 2010), there is a relatively higher power distance embedded within Disney. Since U.S is a country of relatively lower power distance, all people feel an entitlement to certain level of power, and since this is not the case in the organization, it caused feeling of discrimination experienced by Imane. My opinion regarding the case about the company and Imane, the complainant is right. Although the need to have specific code of uniform should be respected as the organization policy, there is need to ensure this does not violate individual
