Content and Scope:
For your first assignment you will analyze one of these texts. Your explanation will be an argument that justifies your interpretation of the text, supported with evidence and examples-all skills you’ve been practicing throughout the semester. Your essay should be well-organized, with an introduction/thesis, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You should include a summary of the article and a solid thesis statement for your paper. You must incorporate examples from the text in the form of quotations, paraphrasing, and/or summarizing. Include an analysis of the Rhetorical Context in your paper (the author, the audience, the style, the purpose, etc.). Purpose: To describe the content, structure, and functions of the messages you encounter in texts. You are expected to read the text and ask yourself, “What is the author’s central argument and how is s/he supporting that thesis?” You are encouraged to incorporate your own viewpoint into this essay, supported by concrete examples in the text, but note that this is an analytical paper- not argumentative so focus the majority of your paper on the analysis of the text.
Questions you might consider:
What tone does the author use to convey his argument?
How is the argument organized?
Is the author relying on one or more of the three rhetorical appeals (ethos, logos, pathos) to make their appeal? If so, why might this be? Is this approach effective?
Are there any holes in the author’s argument? Does the evidence seem credible?
You may also revisit the lecture and class handout on Reading a Text Critically. These questions will help you to engage fully with the text and help you de-code or understand the content more thoroughly.
Audience:
Write this paper for a general academic audience, which may or may not have read the article. Given that your audience may not know the text, you will need to utilize your summary skills learned in class by introducing the text before you discuss its meaning.
Requirements:
Papers should be double-spaced, three to four pages in length (approximately 350 words per page), in 12 pt. size, in Times New Roman font, and stapled. This assignment is worth 20 points.

The “Letter from Birmingham Jail” (1963) is a good text written by Martin Luther Jr. while in prison, which highlights the different uses of ethos, logos and pathos to create rhetorical appeal among its audience. The author narrates in poise the letter which was written by Martin Luther King Jr. while in prison. In the article, the author narrates how Martin L. King Jr. led the revival of the Birmingham campaign and his eventual arrest together with Ralf Abernathy. Martin Luther Jr. and Ralf Abernathy were arrested after marching with work clothes Sixth Avenue Baptist Church into a waiting police wagon. Martin Luther King Jr. would later write a letter in response to the clergy, who criticized his direct methods as being “unwise and untimely” (Kingencyclopedia.stanford.edu, n.d.). Martin Luther King Jr., as the author of the article narrates, would later incorporate some parts of his letter in his later publication, “Why We Can’t Wait”.
