B4.
The scenario
Your SWOT and cost-risk-benefit analysis has been well received both by your team leader and the management team as a whole. As such, you’ve been asked to assist in correcting and updating Raynar Fabrication’s industrial relations policies and plans. Your team consists of three people:
• You, acting as a Human Resources Manager at OzMarket Consulting
• Janice, the team leader
• A HR Coordinator at OzMarket Consulting, as role played by another student in your unit
As a number of policies and plans need to be reviewed, updated or developed, the three of you have decided to start with the policy and plan that is most urgent, the grievance policy. The grievance policy is most urgent because it the current policy has been found to incorrectly refer to leave entitlements, due to an erroneous copy and paste. Raynar Fabrications also has decided they need a grievance policy that reflects its business culture.
Janice has had to take time off work to care for a sick relative so has asked you to attend a meeting with the HR Coordinator to discuss the requirements for the policy, and afterwards send her an email summarising the discussions and suggesting a direction.
Set up a meeting with:
• You, role playing being Human Resources Manager at OzMarket Consulting
• The HR Coordinator, as role played by another student in your unit
Prior to the meeting, undertake some research into grievance policies to:
• Identify three (3) different styles of grievance policy (based on different industries). Different styles may include language, style, format or other factors
• Determine the most appropriate style for your industry
• Identify any legal requirements for grievance policies
Use the meeting to collaborate on developing the grievance policy. Discuss and reach an agreement as to what should be included in the grievance policy, the style of the grievance policy and the format of the grievance policy.
After the meeting, prepare a summary that could be emailed to Janice outlining:
• What was discussed during the meeting
• What should be included in the grievance policy
• The recommended style and format for the grievance policy
NOTE: Refer to pages 33-34 of the “BSBWRK520 Manage employee relations learner guide” document provided on Moodle to inform your answer. Answer in 50-100 words.

When a firm is looking at the number of suppliers they should have, it is important to take into consideration the type of business they have as well as the type of relationship they are hoping to have with their supplier.

Respond to…

When a firm is looking at the number of suppliers they should have, it is important to take into consideration the type of business they have as well as the type of relationship they are hoping to have with their supplier.

For example, when a brokerage is looking to get professional photos on all current and future listings, they would benefit from having one photography supplier. One of the advantages of having one supplier is the ability to build a long term partnership that allows both parties to develop methods and expectations that will lower costs. “These close partnerships often lead to high levels of dependency between the customer and the supplier” (Vonderembse, & White, 2013).  Because the brokerage uses one photography company, the ordering and delivery process is seamless and the turn around time is quick. In addition, the cost per photo decreases because of the amount that is ordered and the loyalty they show each other.  It is important that both the brokerage and the photography company develop contingency plans to deal with unexpected problems that may occur.

The photography company may choose to outsource the editing process and benefits from having multiple suppliers. The reason this works is because no one company can edit the photos fast enough to get them back to the brokerage the following day. By having multiple suppliers the photography company can divide the editing work, and instead of getting photos back 24 hours later, they are able to get edited photos back and sent to the brokerage within 12 hours.  One of the disadvantages this could have is the consistency in quality editing from the multiple sources, it is important to have each supplier deliver the same level of quality.

In conclusion, when determining if a firm should have one supplier or several, it is crucial to look at the business structure and determine the type of relationships needed to be successful. A large grocery chain will benefit from forward vertical integration, while a brokerage needing photos has no need for it.

Respond to…

Should a firm attempt to have fewer or more suppliers? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each approach?

My initial response is that it depends on the situation. Looking at it from my organization we have areas where we utilize dozens of suppliers and some where we have only one. The advantage to having fewer or even just one supplier is that these, “relationships enable both parties to work together for greater integration of the supply chain and for development of methods that can improve quality and lower costs,” (Vonderembse & White, 2013, Chap. 5.4). The reason behind having one, in my example, is that it makes it easier to customize those products or services. We use one vendor for all of our shipping supplies. We have customized shipping containers and product specific packaging materials that they have developed around our specifications. In this way we have a working partnership with this vendor.

On the other side of the discussion, we distribute almost 20K different SKUs. In order to carry such a diverse selection for our customer we have dozens of supply vendors. Because of our sales volume, these vendors compete for space within our building especially those with like items. We also have our own manufacturer that produces generic versions of our most popular items. I would relate this to the backward vertical integration discussed in our text (Vonderembse & White, 2013). This gives us flexibility on what products we produce and gives us a competitive advantage over the brand name items, at least from a cost perspective.

Business-level strategies that Nike is pursuing Differentiation: Nike is robustly engaged in differentiating its products from those of competitors.

Write 1 page thesis on the topic strategic management. Strategic Management Strategic Management Q1: Business-level strategies that Nike is pursuing Differentiation: Nike is robustly engaged in differentiating its products from those of competitors. This is evident when it paid millions of dollars to popular and successful sports icons such as Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Serena Williams to promote the sales of its products. The company focused on producing high quality shoes and other sports wear whose sales were promoted through “guerilla” marketing. This proactive approach resulted into increased 1998 revenues of $9.6 billion. Nike cements its business-level strategy with corporate strategy (diversification) to serve its customers better and increase its market share, thus higher revenue.

Focused differentiation: Nike also pursues focused differentiation strategy where it focuses on serving the sports segment by providing the best sports products than other players in the segment. Nike serves two major market segments: footwear and apparel market segments.

Q2: How Nike’s business level strategies changed the nature of industry competition

Nike utilized its competencies in design and marketing to penetrate new market segments. The company’s business-level strategies changed competition in the industry in that the company significantly reduced the threat of competition through acquisitions. The company resorted to purchasing other footwear companies that offered substitute products, for example, the company acquired Converse, Hurley International as well as Official Starter among others. Nike has made its products unique from those of competitors and relied on innovation for new product development. This has enabled the company to venture new markets. The company has used its competitive advantage over other competitors to stay on top of the market.

Assessment Task 2 Instructions
Carefully read the following:
Boutique Build Australia was established in 2013. It is a boutique building company based in Sydney that specialises in the design and build of high quality designer homes for the Sydney metropolitan and surrounding areas.
A Strategic Plan has been developed for the company by an external consultant with input from the CEO and senior management. The rationale for the Strategic Plan is to set the direction for the company over the next three years, establish strategic priorities and to describe how these will be achieved and the measures (operational priorities) to achieve them.
A first important stage of implementing the Strategic Plan is to meet with the Senior Management team to plan the operational activities to be implemented to achieve the organisation’s objectives. The preliminary meeting will focus on the objectives for the upcoming year being the expansion of the company into Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast markets as described in the Strategic Plan and to discuss and allocate roles and responsibilities in relation to the expansion.
The Senior Managers who will attending the meeting will be:
· Operations Manager (Bob Sales) Bob has been with the company since its inception. He was a former builder and therefore has an excellent understanding of the industry. His main role is to manage the day to day activities for the business, including setting and reviewing budgets and overseeing procurement.
· Marketing Manager (Jane Smith) Jane has recently joined the company. She is responsible for all aspects of marketing, including marketing planning and marketing implementation. Jane’s strengths are in digital marketing.
· Human Resources Manager (Deborah Terns) Deborah has been with the company for 2 years. She has worked in human resources for 10 years and her previous position was also with a construction company and she therefore has an excellent knowledge of the industry.
· Customer Service Manager (Amar Singh) Amar has recently joined the company to manage the increasing number of sales staff. Amar previously worked with a construction company who expanded into other states and therefore has strengths in understanding how this process works.
Complete the following activities:

1. Develop a PowerPoint presentation
The first part of the assessment task requires you to prepare for the meeting with the Senior Management team to discuss the new Strategic Plan and the company’s mission and objectives, as well as provide an opportunity for input and make decisions on operational priorities and activities for the upcoming year. This will also be an opportunity, as set out in the company’s vision, to encourage employees to contribute innovative ideas and improvements, so you should ensure that you research techniques to encourage innovation and ideas for use in the meeting.
In order to prepare for the meeting, you will need to thoroughly review the Strategic and Operational Plan and operational priorities and prepare for a presentation about the new Strategic Plan as part of the meeting.
Your PowerPoint presentation will need to last approximately 15 minutes and use graphics, such as images and tables or graphs to add interest to the presentation, as well as providing a visual representation of data. A further 15 minutes should be allocated to discussion of the operational priorities and activities required to achieve them.
Note that at the meeting your assessor will provide some additional ideas for operational activities which you will need to consider and discuss in accordance with the company’s goals and objectives and the risk management plans identified in the Strategic Plan.
As the staff attending the meeting come from a range of educational backgrounds and familiarity with strategic planning processes, you will need to ensure that your presentation is free of jargon and presented in clear and concise English.
Your presentation should address:
· Meeting aims (scenario information and instructions provided to you).
· The purpose of the Strategic Plan.
· An outline of the organisation’s mission, vision, values and key objectives, as well as strategic priorities as outlined in the Strategic Plan.
· Ensure you build staff commitment by explaining vision and values as a shared vision, which all staff can contribute to.

· A discussion of the company’s strategic objectives operational priorities.
· An outline of key risks identified with regard to the Strategic Plan and at least four examples of how the company intends to manage identified risks.
· A discussion of operational priorities for the year head and activities required.
· Assigning of roles and responsibilities, as well as competencies based on the job role. Review the operational priorities in the Strategic Plan and identify specific operational activities and roles and responsibilities associated with the business expansion. For example, specific marketing activities that will need to occur and actions associated with the setting up of the new display centre. Identify at least ten (10) specific activities, as well as allocation of responsibilities according to the information about staff roles and competencies in the scenario information. This will need to be discussed and confirmed with staff at the meeting.
· Outline of all of the resources that will be in place for the expansion as set out in the Strategic Plan.
· An outline of the expectations of the company with regard to ensuring that the objectives values and standards of the company are adopted in every day interactions with customers,
