Every year a small press called Tightrope Books publishes an anthology called Best Canadian Essays, in which articles that were published in magazines are collected. For the past eight years this series has been overseen by the poet Chris Doda; he engages a new guest editor every time to make the selections. This year the guest editor is the philosopher Mark Kingwell, who writes in his introduction something rather scandalous: “I am not much fetched by personal-voice narratives unless there is some underlying logic to my being there in the first place. … I don’t pay a lot of attention to bio lines or bio notes. … I want to hear intelligence, wit and suppleness of expression.”

One of these very essays continues this bold idea – that “what an essay is about is less important than how it is written” – even more explicitly: “The Future Is the Period at the End of a Sentence” by Peter Babiak is a rant against his students’ linguistic laziness and a furious paean to the power of the perfect sentence. Babiak dismisses “creative expression” as “easy” – it’s grammar, he says, that is “the deep structure of language … the root of all that they dream, think, say and write.”

This kind of aestheticism is, as they say, “problematic” these days, as the aesthetic itself is notoriously divisive, and of course one’s bio is important to prove one’s level of privilege. The idea that elegant and playful writing is better writing privileges those with a certain kind of education, who have the luxury of detachment and defavours (or “erases” as the overwrought contemporary scholarly jargon has it) the true and powerful experiences of the marginalized. Surely a story that exposes an injustice or gives voice to the oppressed is more important than something clever and entertaining?

The thing is, once one is addicted to the stylish one can take little pleasure in the lumpy, no matter how serious the subject matter. The serious is done no favours by an earnest style. Furthermore, to say that this aesthetic interest occurs only in conservative or privileged educational systems is to suggest that writers who do not come from privilege are incapable of being witty, and that is rather condescending.

I don’t think this argument is so present in other countries – especially in Europe, where being clever or funny or even maintaining a certain stylish hauteur is not seen as a moral liability. This is Canada, where we still reward the virtuous over the witty. The vast majority of Canadian novels and short stories lack wit, and they rarely experiment with style that is highly economical or even faintly oblique. There are still so many awkward expository passages that are so obviously an authorial point of view (“They had first settled here in 1956, before the New Families Act of 1958 drove down commodity prices …”), so many clichés (“They had grown up in crippling poverty,” “She felt frozen with fear,” “He had a chiselled jaw”), so many redundant dialogue tags (“’Don’t go in there,’ she warned”), so many exclamation marks!

In fiction, I look for great sentences above all else. And in Canadian fiction these are difficult to find. Publishers are still rewarding lifeless novel-writing if they feel a story is “important.”

The award nominations this year were, on the other hand, pretty good at picking good line-by-line writing.

I think of Patrick deWitt’s gleefully preposterous dialogue: “The customs agent was flummoxed. He asked Malcolm, ‘She is sick, monsieur?’ / ‘She isn’t sick.’ / ‘She does not die?’ / ‘Never.’ / ‘She must not die here,’ the customs

agent warned Malcolm. / ‘She’ll die somewhere else,’ Malcolm promised. / The customs agent looked back at Frances. ‘No dying in France.’ He stamped their passports and waved them on.”

I think of Kathy Page’s clever descriptions: “… a tangle of stockings of various thicknesses and similar hues, which looked like the cast-off skins of a large nest of beige and tan snakes.”

Sheila Heti’s febrile and poetic philosophizing: “I resent the spectacle of all this breeding, which I see as a turning-away from the living – an insufficient love for the rest of us, we billions of orphans already living.”

Lisa Moore’s vernacular-inflected stream-of-consciousness: “And your co-worker with his sunrise hair, the winding rosebush tattoo tucking under the sleeve of his employee-issue Shoe Emporium T-shirt, still high from whatever all-nighter and foxy eyes, whose grandmother was the leading expert in cold-water sea cucumbers, no joke, at the Marine Institute and who [Marty] is not even bi but straight-up gay for gosh sakes, like definitely that end of the spectrum, according to him. Sea cucumbers.”

Paige Cooper’s minimalist satire, as spare as haiku: “She gave me a piece of black leather with words stamped in serif. Surgeon. Sensei. Colonist. I left her bill, which was insane, on Moe’s desk.”

Writers like this can make any story interesting, even if it is implausible or frivolous.

So my plea for the new year is: Can we publish more of the stylish, please, and fewer of the workhorses?

Question 1. What was the case about? the case is about the deportation of eight appellants, who are soon called before an immigration judge. The appellants are children of 10-17 years. The DHS’s (Department of Homeland Security) lawyer argues for the children’s extradition. (US Courts. (2016). However, no attorney stances with the youngsters, and each child are thus needed to plead to the allegations against him/her and are given chance to make lawful contentions and exhibit proof on their own behalf. This is because each child has attempted to acquire lawyers via pro bono services but has not obtained anyone to take their lawsuits. The appellants deferentially appeal the court to accord them relief.

Question 2. Did the trial hold true to your expectations?  Yes. According to (Reyes, N. (2019), “Though a complaint contests by a Rule 12(b) (6) motion to dismiss require not to offer detailed factual allegations, it must provide more than labels and conclusions and encompass more than a formulaic recitation of the elements of a cause of action”. Thereby, the appellants must show more than just conjecture of a right to relief. True to this, in the judging on a request to terminate, the court assumed that the veracity of the appellants’ factual claims and drew all- rational implications in the appellant’s favor. The court had to answer whether the truths in the operative pleading adequately indicated a “plausible” justification of relief.

However, according to (Braaten, D. (2021), “the respondents contended that as ‘arriving’ or ‘non-admitted immigrants, the plaintiffs had no ‘procedural due-process liberties in the Fifth Amendment.” The respondents’ contention is not per the authorities they quote. This is because under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), as revised by the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (“IIRIRA”), an immigrant is “removable” if (a) he/she was not permitted to the US and is “inadmissible” in the 8 U.S.C. § 1182a or (b) he/she was permitted to the US and is “de-portable”

Question 3, What stage of the trial process did you observe?  I observed the opening proceedings and the examination of evidence stages of the Motion for preliminary injunctive relief

Question 4. What was the outcome? In contrast to the appellant’s proposal, notification to each class affiliate in the current subject was neither practicable nor necessary. Since the court lacked authority to accord class-wide injunctive reprieve, and since the plaintiffs could not opt-out of the trial, the plaintiffs were thereby not directly impacted by the certification at that time. Due to this, the court coincided with the respondents that the issue of what notification, if any, must be offered to the plaintiffs must be deferred until the evidences of the plaintiff’s legal right-to-counsel allegations are settled.

Question 5. What did you learn about the trial process? In the trial, I have learned that the respondents did not debate the ability or numerosity of the class representatives to safeguard the interest of the plaintiffs sufficiently and fairly. (Reyes, N. (2019). Moreover, the respondents did not seem to contend that children under a particular age are unable of performing pre se in exclusion trials. These children are seemingly incapable, from the financial point of view, to feed, house, or cloth themselves, and in most circumstances, they will be living with a guardian or parent. Owing to this, the respondents’ standing in this matter appeared to include, instead of the minor’s personal skills, the part that a guardian or parent can and must serve in the exclusion trials.

You will need to run the scripts to create the needed database tables. If you are using your own Oracle insulation the script should work as normal.

There are four(4) questions valued a total of 100 marks. You need to provide a well-structured and documented solution to the problems.
With your code solution you also need to provide the source code in editable format copy and paste in the submission file (NOT SCREEN CAPTURE).
The resulting output of the running solution you can use the screen capture or text copy and paste into the document. You can use the screen capture features of the OS you are using. Question 1 (30 marks)
a)
Write a function called calc_product_cost that returns the total cost of an item after the tax has been added to the product. The function has two IN parameters IDSHOPER and IDPRODUCT and returns a number as a result of the function execution. If IDSHOPER or IDPRODUCT or Customer STATE value does not exist in the relevant tables the function should return NULL as the result. You need to return the NULL result explicitly. The function calculates cost of an item based on the item cost and percentage tax charged for the state the customers address is in. (10 marks)
b)
Write an SQL statement that displays customer details (ID, First Name, Last, Name, State) and total to be paid for each customer for product in the BB_PRODUCT table whose ID is 2 by calling the calc_product_cost function. Rename the resulting filed from the function call TOTAL_COST. (5 marks)
c)
Write a function called sf_total_order_item_cost which takes in three IN parameters IDSHOPER, IDBASKET and IDPRODUCT. The function returns the total cost on the order for an item for the customer. The cost of the item is calculated by calling calc_product_cost and multiplying it by the quantity in the order. (5 marks)
d)
Write a procedure (called sp_report_on_products) that takes a single IN parameter Product ID and creates a report to the screen as follows. For every customer in the table create a report using the DBMS_OUTPUT module to print the Customer Last Name, First Name first character with full stop, State, Product Description, Product Cost, Tax, Total Cost, by calling the sf_total_order_item_cost function.
Format for the line output.
LASTNAME, FIRSTNAME, Product: ‘DESCRITION’ Cost: $9999.99, Tax: $9999.99, Total Cost: $9999.99.
Example dummy output
John, C. Product: ‘Some product description here’ Cost: $13.75, Tax: $0.56, Total Cost: $14.31.
The tax calculated is the sum of tax that each customer would have for all the orders of that product.
After processing all the customers display the following information.

Question 2 (20 marks)
The Brewers Company is concerned about possible unauthorised changes to customer orders that may compromise the companys profit.
Your task is to create a database trigger to monitor such changes to some important columns in the BB_BASKET table.
Important Setup:
Create a copy of the BB_BASKET table in your own schema by using the following command:
CREATE TABLE CUSTOMER_COPY AS SELECT * FROM BB_BASKET;
Create a table to store change logs (call the table TMP_CHANGELOG) to hold the following fields IDBASKET, QUANTITY, SUBTOTAL, TOTAL and LOG_DATE. You will need to refer to the relevant table for field types and sizes. The LOG_DATE field will contain the system date.

  1. Create a database trigger with the following specification:
    • fires AFTER an UPDATE on CUSTOMER_COPY table.
    • fires if there is any change to QUANTITY, SUBTOTAL or TOTAL columns of the CUSTOMER_COPY table.
    • fires for each row changed.

  2. Test the trigger with the following specification:

    Question 3 (30 marks)
    This question has a few section (procedures and functions) described. You are free to write helper procedures or functions but they will have to have high cohesion and low coupling (do one thing only and not be reliant on external values).
    1) Create a PL/SQL procedure called sp_shopping_month which has an IN parameters for the year and the month. The procedure will display to the screen the following information for each basket created (DTCREATED) for that year/month. The information needs to be retrieved using an explicit cursor. (5 marks)
    Basket BASKEID has a total of BASKET_TOTAL plus SHIPPING total cost of order BASKET_TOATL_PLUS_SHIPING
    2) Write a function called sf_total_shipping which takes in the date parameter and returns the calculated cost of shipping for all the baskets which have been created in that year/month. (5 marks)
    3) Write a procedure called sp_uncommitted_order_month which reports on all the baskets created but where the order has not been placed (ORDERPLACED) for all the baskets in the table. The output should be as follows. (5 marks)
    There are COUNT numbers of orders created but not finalized with a total of $AMOUNT.XX and total shipping cost of $SHIPPING.XX.
    4) Write a procedure called sp_report_shopping_totals that will produce the following output in the format specified bellow. The procedure needs to use explicit cursor/s for each year starting with the oldest year and produces a summary of the shopping for that month.
    The years and month output needs to be in ascending order.

a) Write a stored function called is_number which takes one IN parameter and returns a number if the input can be converted to a number otherwise the function should return an appropriate result. The function needs to correctly identify if the parameter can be converted to a numeric value. The function should work in PL/SQL as well as with SQL statements. (5 marks)
b) Write an SQL statement to use is_number which passes in test values is_number(‘123’) and is_number(‘12a3’) and returns the result. Provide the SQL code and captured output. (make sure you change the quotes if copying from this document as Word uses the wrong characters for single quote characters) (5 marks)

On August 8th Harry’s sends George a document labeled Confirmation of Order” that said, in relevant part, “this confirms your order for 2,500 Shirts at a price of $5.00, FOB Harry’s Printers, Ithaca, NY”

On August 25, Harry’s ships the 2,500 t-shirts to Phil’s designated supply house and sends Phil’s an invoice for $13,200, including shipping costs of $700. The shipping voucher states all charges are payable within 60 days from date of receipt of goods.

On August 31, Harry hears through the grapevine that Phil’s Trading is having serious money problems. A friend tells Harry that Phil’s was three week’s behind on a $50,000 account with his firm and the friend had heard they were 4 week’s behind on a $20,000 account with another supplier.

Harry calls George and asks if what he heard was true. George confirms it, but tells Harry it is just a short term cash flow problem and it will have no effect on Harry getting paid by the end of the 60 days. Not feeling any calmer, Harry tells George that he want’s a certified check for the full amount in 72 hours or he is sending “some guys to Park Slope to pick up ‘My’ shirts.”

Phil’s did not make any payment by the 72 hour deadline and on September 5th Harry sent three large employees to Acme Supply House who, not wanting any problems, turned the shirts over to them. The employees brought the t-shirts back to Harry’s. Acme sent Phil’s a bill for $300 for the time its workers spent on the issue.

On September 15th, Harry’s sold 1,000 of the shirt’s to Evelyn’s Gift Shop in Park Slope, a major competitor of Phil’s, for $4.00 per shirt, FOB Ithaca, NY. On September 29th, Harry’s sold another 1,000 shirts to Evelyn’s, FOB Ithaca, NY. The last 500 shirts are still in Harry’s warehouse.

As it turns out, George was right. Phil’s cash flow problems were temporary and by October 1, all of Phil’s back bills were paid off, and Phil’s could have paid Harry’s as well. Phil’s sues Harry’s for breach of contract and Harry’s counterclaims alleging breach of contract also. Analyze the claims and defenses of the parties.
