What are Cards?

Directions: Upload your First “Card” assignment, as explained here (and also in the Orientation module). What are Cards?

Cards are things you write. They could be done on notecards, a sheet of paper, or via a document for online submissions.

In a card, you make ONE (1) philosophical move in reaction to the assigned reading.

So, each card has a page range (pages 1-7 in Aristotle’s Ethics, for instance). You read those pages and then make ONE (1) move.

What’s a Move?

Philosophers do things in arguments, like Challenge, Clarify, and Corroborate.

Challenge

When you challenge something in the reading, you suggest that something the author said is not true. Essentially: tell me why what the author has said is false. When you do this, there are three key points:

  • you CITE
  • you employ CHARITY
  • you use your own words to explain the challenge.

Clarify

When you clarify something, you introduce a distinction that is helpful to the current argument. Essentially, tell me a distinction that is helpful to keep in mind while thinking through this argument. When you do this, you must do three key things:

  • you CITE
  • you employ CHARITYLinks to an external site.
  • you use your own words in explaining what the clarification means and what it will do for the argument.

Corroborate

When you corroborate something, you suggest that something the author has said is true. Essentially, tell me why the author is correct in something they said, providing additional evidence. When you do this, you do the following:

  • You give more evidence for that claim.
  • You CITE the text,
  • You employ CHARITY,
  • You explain in your own words.

Find a recent story/issue that relates to your project in discussing an ethical issue, and use the facts from the article to write a case study. Project Outline:

  1. Abstract
  2. Introduction
  3. Case Summary
  4. Dilemma Summary:
    a. identify the parties involved, their rights, their responsibilities
    b. Identify the significant ethical issues of the case.
    c. Identify the relevant factual issues, conceptual issues, social constraints, and any additional information necessary for an accurate understanding of the case
    d. Formulate possible courses of action and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of those action
    e. Indicate which course of action you would choose, and why, provide your own opinions. -Use your facts/sources to convince me of your ethical point of view-.
  5. Conclusion
  6. References
  7. Appendix (only if necessary)
    Some tips:
    1) Getting Started
    a. Outline your essay
    b. Recommendation
    i. Critically analyze the case, determine the potential courses of action, and — most importantly — take a clear and decisive position with respect to what you would do if you were one of the lead characters in this case. ii. Weigh pros and cons and evaluate which outweighs the other.
    2) Mindset of the Paper
    a. Pretend you are one of the lead characters in the case – this will allow you to write with authority on the topic
    b. Pretend audience knows nothing
    c. View your paper as a “position paper.” Although it includes “explanation,” your task is to understand the context, to evaluate the evidence, and then to make a decision concerning the appropriate course of action, supporting through arguments.
    d. Take a clear and decisive position –what would you do if you were one of the lead characters in this case?
    3) Cite your sources and list in bibliography. Choose sources of substance. Should look at outside articles to have multiple sources. (i.e. Not all technical Papers) a. Use databases available via FNU library services:
    i. LexisNexis: legal, business, medical related issues
    b. Local newspapers.
    c. Fiji Financial Intelligence Unit and FICAC websites.
    d. Consumer council of Fiji reports.
    4) Avoid potential grammatical errors
    a. Don’t use complex vocabulary if you don’t know how.
    b. Don’t use semicolons if you don’t know how.
    5) Technical Clarifications
    a. Maximum of 15-page essay, 1.5 spaced
    b. 12pt font, Times New Roman
    6) Writing the case should also require some research, and a “further reading” list of sources should be cited at the end of the case. For example, if you are writing a case on conflict of interest, your citations may include a reading you found explaining what conflict of interest is, an example of a conflict of interest policy developed by a company, and a news article you found describing a real-life instance of conflict of interest.
    Notes:
    i. Students can do this assignment individually, in pairs or in groups not exceeding four members.

iv. A turn-it-in facility will be provided on the Moodle for preliminary plagiarism checking as well as final project submission drop box. A maximum of 30% similarity index is allowed.
    v. The project is due on 7th November, 2021 and the drop box facility will expire accordingly.

By drawing the sample of fifty cards, I did not get a defective deck since I did not pick any joker or king cards which were theoretically assigned the value of a defective card

You will prepare and submit a term paper on Problem Solving and Improvement. Your paper should be a minimum of 750 words in length.

By drawing the sample of fifty cards, I did not get a defective deck since I did not pick any joker or king cards which were theoretically assigned the value of a defective card. Thus, it is my reasoned opinion and line of thought that the deck that I did chose from the shuffle of cards was not defective to that extent. The second draw that I with replacement has a defect since I got a king thereby meaning that the permutations that I did with the previous set of cards could not be repeated. This is to say that the cards that I drew on the second ruffle gave me a defective result since I got a king card which we theoretically assigned the value of a defective score or card.

I did not get 25% of each suit because the sample given which is 13 did not represent the whole population which is given as 52. There was variation in the number and types of cards selected resulting in less than 25% number of suits chosen. Therefore, about my sample, I have a bad deck since I am unable to choose a 25% number of suits. When using a single sample a proportion of 0.192 is obtained. For example, 10/52 gives as 0.192. Therefore, a single sample does not give a clear representation of the population since its proportion is less as compared to the population it represents.

Also, when comparing the average sample to a single sample, the average for the 10 samples gives a greater proportion than the single sample. On the other hand, the average sample gives a good representative of the whole population since its proportion is closer to the population. It is not possible to get 25% of each suit because the sample proportion is small. Also, when we repeat with 5 samples, the outcome will be the same. The conclusion is that it is difficult to get 25% of each suit when using fewer samples.

Therefore, the higher the number of samples used the higher the chances of getting 25% of each suit. 10/52 gives 0.1923 or 19.23%, 26/52 gives 0.5 or 50%, 51/52 gives 0.9808 or 98.08%
