This assignment provides you with the opportunity to explore some of the changes in U.S. families and reflect on the evolution of the American family as portrayed in television.
This assignment is aligned with the module learning objectives #2, 3, 4, and 6.
Background
In the United States over 95 percent of people believe the combination of husband, wife, and children constitutes a family. This two-parent family structure is known as a traditional nuclear family, referring to heterosexual married parents and children as the nucleus, or core, of the group. However, the “typical” American family has changed radically over the last 60 years. Today, only about 64 percent of children live in homes with two parents who are married, representing an all-time low (Pew Research Center). American’s today are marrying later than ever before, divorcing sooner, cohabitating or choosing to remain single. Whereas married couples dominated the family structure in years past, only 30 percent of millennials feel that a successful marriage is an important part of life or defines a family.
U.S. families are changing in response to factors such as: higher rates of cohabitation, growing acceptance of divorce, a fast-growing blended family structure, same-sex nuclear families, single parent households and more career options for women, and the growing cost of housing and childcare.
Television is a powerful medium that has continually reinvented images of the American family over the past sixty years. Arguably, television has created an idealized image of the American family and not always portrayed a realistic depiction of what the typical family structure looks like. As you learned in Module 3, Media is a powerful agent of socialization that often dictates what we ‘think we should be doing.’ However, as times have changed, so have the images of family on television. This assignment will explore some of those changes and ask you to reflect on the evolution of the American family as portrayed in television.
*You will find a link to the document of shows to choose from here Family in TV Land –Show Options and at the end of the paper description.
Overview
For this assignment you will write a 2–3-page paper that explores the portrayals of family on TV. The paper will be based on information that you collect from watching shows that portray a traditional family and a nontraditional family (selected from the Family in TV Land –Show Options ). As you are watching the shows you should take notes in order to perform a content analysis. You will then synthesize your observations and the content analyses of the family portrayals on TV into the 2–3-page paper. The paper should include the following:
A definition for a traditional family and a nontraditional family
A brief description of each show
A description of how each show portrays a family
The content analyses
A Sociological Analysis
Directions
The assignment begins with “Father Knows Best” (1954-1963). The website for the show “Father Knows Best”.Links to an external site. gives a lot of information about the show, its characters, and content. I want you to read one of the magazine articles on this website from TV Guide that was published during the time the show was syndicated. This information will provide a foundation and context for your paper. You should take notes on what you learned about the show including audience reception, characters, and the content of the show.
Next, you will watch a full-length episode of three (3) shows: “Father Knows Best”, a traditional show and a nontraditional show. You will then begin a content analysis of the three (3) shows.
Content Analysis
Watch a full-length episode of “Father Knows Best” (these can be found on the “Father Knows Best” websiteLinks to an external site. or on YouTubeLinks to an external site.. ( https://fatherknowsbest.us )
Choose a show from the Traditional family list and watch at least one full episode
Choose a show from the Nontraditional family list and watch at least one full episode
In the episode(s) you will be looking for:
Gender roles and family structure (mother, father, children)
Roles and expectations of family members
Parents as figures of authority
Children (chores, manners, obedience to authority)
What norms, values or beliefs are assumed in the shows? How are they presented?
Communication styles
Content of the show (what message was the show trying to send to the audience?)
How is the content reflective of the average American family at the time? (or not)
Take note of:
race
occupations
class
sexual orientation
identity
Sociological Analysis
The heart of the essay is the sociological analysis.
Choose at least one theoretical view (functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism) through which to analyze your chosen family shows.
Reflect on how well your show selections support a theoretical view of family. Use your identified families as support for or an argument against the theoretical view of family in society. Address the following questions:
Family in TV Land :
Traditional: The George Lopez show
Non traditional: Modern Family

The concept of the American family has evolved significantly over the decades, shaped by changes in social, cultural, and economic dynamics. Television has reflected and, in some cases, influenced this evolution, serving as a lens through which societal norms and values about family life are viewed.

Since the largest group to experience hip fractures are older adults, the normal changes that occur with aging place them at higher risk for complications of immobility and surgical repair of the fracture (for example: decreased muscle mass, decreased bone density, suppressed immune response, and loss of muscle strength and flexibility).
Immobility after a hip fracture (and surgical repair of the break) contributes to the following undesirable changes within the body.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when blood pools in the lower extremity veins, which increases the risk of pulmonary embolism and compromised circulation and oxygenation.
Muscle atrophy contributes to orthostatic hypotension when the smooth muscles of the venous system fail to contract when the client changes from a supine to an upright position.
Loss of appetite due to inactivity, depression, boredom, or pain can contribute to weight loss and malnutrition impacting muscle mass and delaying healing.
Use of an indwelling urinary catheter increases the risk for urinary tract infection.
Calcium loss from long bones may lead to renal calculi and osteoporosis.
Pressure and moisture to the skin increases the risk of pressure ulcers.
If client unable to reposition themselves in bed, skin can break down increasing the chance for infection.
Social isolation increases the risk of delirium and disorientation.
When supine, the weight of the chest wall limits lung expansion and contributes to atelectasis.
Blood redistribution and fluid shifts increase the risk for pulmonary edema.
Pooling of secretions increases the risk for pneumonia and decreased gas exchange.
Decreased weight bearing contributes to hormone imbalances.
Considering the concept of mobility with the systems disorder of a hip fracture, it is evident that the older adult is most at risk for not only experiencing a hip fracture but having one or more complications of immobility due to the injury, as well.
Patient-focused care should address pain management (pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic), promoting optimal respiratory status, and early movement with the help of physical therapy. As always, client safety should be incorporated into all care.

Over the last two study periods, we have examined the physiology of most of our major organ systems. For this final assessment, you are going to research and prepare a 6–8- minute presentation on a disease of your choice that will be viewed by your peers. The disease you choose must impact one of the physiological systems we have covered in either HBS202 or HBS204 and you must be able to describe how the disease changes the physiology of the system. This may make some diseases harder than others so think carefully about your choice.
In your presentation, you must include the following information:
1. An introduction – make sure you introduce yourself and explain why you have picked the disease you will be discussing. 2. Information about the disease – this could include how many people will suffer from the disease, causes if they are known and symptoms. 3. How the disease changes the physiology of the tissue/organ system(s) involved. You will need to make sure that you introduce what is normal before you discuss how the disease changes it and leads to symptoms mentioned in question 2. 4. What is one aspect of the disease that you have chosen that researchers are currently focussing on, this is where you will need to have a look in the scientific literature, and it needs to be “current” specifically from 2020 or 2021. 5. Potential treatment – you need to pick one intervention that is commonly used to treat the disease and explain how this works making sure you talk about the relevant physiology.
Remember – this assessment is about you communicating the physiology of your chosen disease not just general information about the disease copied from the internet. You will need to do some research and include information that isn’t just from textbooks and Wikipedia. You will need to reference your presentation (further information on this will be provided on the LMS). Instructions The objectives of this task are: • To investigate a novel physiological concept (i.e. something that is relevant to, but has not been directly covered by, your lectures); • To develop research skills: to select appropriate sources of reliable and relevant information; • To develop scientific writing skills: to use vocabulary appropriate for a general scientific audience when preparing your talk, and to develop a concise story that conveys the major features of the technique in a logical sequence; • To develop audio-visual presentation skills: to use information gathered by your research to construct a short verbal description of physiological concepts using diagrams to assist you with your explanations; • To develop correct referencing and other acknowledgement skills.
Resources Textbooks You can find some general information in your prescribed Physiology textbook, however it will not be able to help you answer all of the parts of this assignment: Silverthorn, D.U. (2019) Human Physiology: An Integrated Approach 8th Edition (Global Edition), Pearson Any Anatomy and Physiology textbook will be able to provide you with useful basic information
Websites The web is an immense resource, but be careful – apart from some sites such as those run by the publishers of scientific journals, very few web sites are peer-reviewed or checked for accuracy. For further information on assessing the integrity and validity of information sources, visit the La Trobe University library web site (http://www.latrobe.edu.au/library/help-and-training/videos). Also remember that any information sourced from the web has to be acknowledged in a citation, just as a print-based reference would be. Wikipedia is not an acceptable reference for this assignment. You need to make sure that you include in text citations where relevant. You do not need to use APA7 as this takes up a lot of space on your slides. Instead consider using author date or numbering of the references on your slides (have a look at the video on the LMS for more information). You need to include a full reference list at the end of your presentation. For this assignment you may find that some of your references are from the early 2000’s, particularly those about your chosen disease – that is perfectly OK. Remember, you do need to use a resource that is from 2020 or 2021 for one aspect of the presentation
Create your presentation After you have gathered all your research together and decided what should be included (and just as importantly, what should be left out!), the next step is to record the presentation with voice over to demonstrate your knowledge in this area. There are a number of tools that can be used to record your presentation. PowerPoint slides with audio voiceover is perfectly acceptable (information on how to do this can be found on this website https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-record-voiceover- powerpoint-4173784). A follow on article explains how to convert your presentation to a video https://www.lifewire.com/convert-powerpoint-to-video-4165363. An alternative approach is to record yourself in Zoom. If you are feeling adventurous, you can try one of these other software options: • ‘Explain Everything’ (collaborative & interactive whiteboard; http://explaineverything.com) • ‘CamStudio’ (screen and audio capture; http://camstudio.org) • ‘Camtasia Studio’ (TechSmith Corporation, free trial version) This is what we use in the department to create the recordings that you see on the LMS • Quickcast (Mac; free) • Screencast-O-Matic (Windows; free; https://screencast-o-matic.com/home)
If you would like to appear in your presentation, that is great but there is no expectation that you
do. You must make sure that you include slides of some kind in your presentation to be eligible for full marks.
Submit your presentation for assessment Once you have recorded the presentation, you will need to save it as an .mp4 file and upload it to the dropbox on the LMS. This is not a drag and drop submission, you need to read the instructions that are on the LMS about how to do this. Please note that it does take some time to upload the file, don’t panic that it isn’t there but you do need to make sure you allow a bit more time to process the file.
You must also submit your slides and script to a separate Turnitin drop box to ensure that you have written the information in your own words. This is not marked but you must submit your script.
Deadline Your presentation is to be submitted to the LMS drop box no later than 23:59 on Sunday 14th November.
Assessment This task will be assessed based on the detailed marking rubric provided on the last couple of pages of this document. The marks for your audio-visual presentation will be weighted as follows:
• 60% on scientific content; and • 30% on the quality of the presentation and • 10% on the correct use of references
Within three weeks of submission, a member of the physiology teaching staff will mark your presentation using the rubric below and provide written feedback. You will receive a mark out of 100 for your presentation but remember this will be scaled down to a mark out of 30 for your final grade.
Late submission You will be able to submit your assessment for 5 days after the due date (until 23:59 Friday 19th November), however your final mark will be subject to a penalty of 5% per day that your submission is late up to a maximum of 25%. After 5 days you will be given a mark of ‘zero’

The group have regular repeat gigs around the North West of England, which provides enough funds for them to be paid as part-time professional musicians. In addition to their musical talents, Alexander, Sergei, and Vassily, are experienced sound engineers, who provide a PA service for the Music Mates gigs and for a number of other bands in the North-West area. They share a wide network of friends who are also musicians and they often promote other bands. But recently these other bands have asked them to be agents for an agree fee. If they decide to take this professional route, it would mean that they could work full-time as musicians/agents. However, they are aware that starting the agency would require a business approach. They would be responsible for advertising events, social media marketing, keeping business accounts, providing an updated calendar of events, and keeping track of the communications between themselves, the clients who want to book bands, and the bands who are signed to the Music Mates agency. At the moment, they use a website, a Facebook page, and the SoundCloud audio platform. Alexander, Sergei, and Vassily all have iphone’s and macbook pro laptop computers. They realise that starting the agency requires a business approach, which includes software that will support their business. They have read about Customer Relationship Management software and Enterprise Resource Management software, which appears to offer the type of information technology support that they will need. However, they need professional help before they can make any final decisions about investing funds in business software. They are also interested in the possibility of utilising Open Source Software, but require information on the advantages and disadvantages. Growing Music Mates into a full-time small to medium enterprise business that supports three members of staff will mean significant changes and there are some concerns that using business technology might change the close working relationships which exist between Alexander, Sergei, Vassily and the bands with which they have personal connections. They are keen to run the business in a democratic style and as such, everyone will have an equal vote on any business decisions. Therefore, they require a report that can be read and understood by each of them. You are the OIM consultant who is responsible for researching this business and providing a consultancy report.
