One of Natalie’s friends, Curtis Lesperance, runs a coffee shop where he sells specialty coffees and prepares and sells muffins and cookies.

Cookie Creations (Chapters 9 and 10)
This assignment will focus on the Cookie Creations case study from Chapter 9 (page 9-37) and Chapter 10 (page 10-42) of your textbook. There are two parts to this assignment. Review the case situations for each part (i.e., in each chapter), and then complete the instructions.

Part I
One of Natalie’s friends, Curtis Lesperance, runs a coffee shop where he sells specialty coffees and prepares and sells muffins and cookies. He is eager to buy one of Natalie’s fine European mixers, which would enable him to make larger batches of muffins and cookies. However, Curtis cannot afford to pay for the mixer for at least 30 days. He asks Natalie if she would be willing to sell him the mixer on credit.
Natalie comes to you for advice. She asks you to address the questions below.
Curtis has given me a set of his most recent financial statements. What calculations should I do with the data from these statements, and what questions should I ask him after I have analyzed the statements? How will this information help me decide if I should extend credit to Curtis?
Is there an alternative other than extending credit to Curtis for 30 days?
I am thinking seriously about being able to have my customers use credit cards. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of letting my customers pay by credit card?
The following transactions occurred in June through August 2020.
June 1: After much thought, Natalie sells a mixer to Curtis on credit, terms n/30, for $1,150 (cost of mixer $620).
June 30: Curtis calls Natalie. He is unable to pay the amount outstanding for another month, so he signs a 1-month, 8.35% note receivable.
July 31: Curtis calls Natalie. He indicates that he is unable to pay today but hopes to have a check for her at the end of the week. Natalie prepares the journal entry to record the dishonor of the note. She assumes she will be paid within a week.
Aug. 7: Natalie receives a check from Curtis in payment of his balance owed.
Instructions:
Answer Natalie’s questions in a Word document.
Prepare journal entries for the transactions that occurred in June, July, and August in an Excel spreadsheet. Round to the nearest dollar. Note that the company uses a perpetual inventory system. Use the Part I Excel Template to record your transactions.
To reiterate, you will write your responses to Natalie’s questions (1–3) in a Word document, and you will complete the journal transactions in an Excel spreadsheet. Your responses to Part I (Natalie’s questions) should be a minimum of one page in length, and you will add your responses for Part II to this document before submitting.
Part II
Natalie is also thinking of buying a van that will be used only for business. The cost of the van is estimated at $36,500. Natalie would spend an additional $2,500 to have the van painted. In addition, she wants the back seat of the van removed so that she will have a lot of room to transport her mixer inventory as well as her baking supplies. The cost of taking out the back seat and installing shelving units is estimated at $1,500. She expects the van to last 5 years, and she expects to drive it for 200,000 miles. The annual cost of vehicle insurance will be $2,400. Natalie estimates that at the end of the 5-year useful life, the van will sell for $7,500. Assume that she will buy the van on August 15, 2020, and it will be ready for use on September 1, 2020.
Natalie is concerned about the impact of the van’s cost on her income statement and balance sheet. She has come to you for advice on calculating the van’s depreciation.
Instructions:
Determine the cost of the van.
Prepare three depreciation tables for 2020, 2021, and 2022: one for straight-line depreciation (similar to the one in Illustration 10-9), one for double-declining balance depreciation (Illustration 10-13), and one for units-of-activity depreciation (Illustration 10-11). Use the Part II Excel Template to determine depreciation. For units-of-activity, Natalie estimates that she will drive the van as follows: 15,000 miles in 2020; 45,000 miles in 2021; and 50,000 miles in 2022. Recall that Cookie Creations has a December 31 year-end.
What impact will the three methods of depreciation have on Natalie’s balance sheet at December 31, 2020? What impact will the three methods have on Natalie’s income statement in 2020?
What impact will the three methods of depreciation have on Natalie’s income statement over the van’s total 5-year useful life?
What method of depreciation would you recommend Natalie use, and why?
Use the same Word document that you used to record your Part I responses (one page in length), and add your responses for the Part II questions (1–5), which should be one page in length.
In summary, you will submit one Word document containing your responses for Parts I and II (two-page minimum) and two Excel spreadsheets containing Natalie’s journal transactions from Part I and the

Legal and Ethical Scenarios

Read the scenarios and the questions that follow. Answer Scenarios 1 and 2, then select any two (2) of the remaining scenarios for a total of four (4) scenarios.

You must also provide an answer for the recommendations section. Identify and analyze the legal issue(s). Apply legal concepts and make potential arguments as directed using laws, cases, examples, and/or other relevant materials. Consider using short headings (consult APA materials) to separate the topics. Summarize the facts; do not copy the scenarios into the paper. Support your answers with information from the textbook and at least four scholarly sources in addition to the textbook or course lectures. By Day 7, prepare a 5 to 7 page paper that identifies the legal issues and potential solutions and answers all questions presented, supported by relevant legal authority. Do not exceed the page length by more than two pages.

Overview

Headquartered in Savannah, Georgia,  ________________ operates two coffee shops in Georgia and one in Alabama.  Approximately 30% of the employees work full time; however, ____________ primarily hires part-time employees as baristas, delivery drivers, cooks and dishwashers.  The company experienced explosive growth over the last four years, but with the growth came increased legal issues.  The owners seek your advice on the following legal and ethical issues.

Scenario 1 – Business Organizations

Bailey Andrews and Danita Brown met while working at Starbucks and attending college in Georgia.  Bailey studied business at South University, while Dania attended the Art Institute for culinary management. The two friends were tired of working for someone else and opened [SELECT A NAME FOR THE COFFEE SHOP]  as a partnership after college.   Now that the business has grown, the two partners are considering a new legal form for their business.

  •  Analyze three types of business organizations Andrews and Brown might consider for their existing restaurant. Be sure to consider at least one limited liability option. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of each type.
  • Select one type of business for Andrews and Brown and provide support for your choice.
  • Select a name for the coffee shop and use it when answering the remaining scenarios.

Scenario 2 – Employment Discrimination

Born in 1975, Juanita Mendoza immigrated from Mexico in 2005 and became a U.S. citizen in 2010. Mendoza speaks fluent English with a strong Hispanic accent. Her accent does not interfere with her ability to communicate with others. Mendoza worked as a cook and waitress for 20 years. Although she did not have any formal management experience, Mendoza applied for a shift manager’s job with [Restaurant Name]; however, she was not hired for the position. The restaurant currently employs 5 full time employees and 14 part time employees.

  • Analyze the possible grounds Mendoza might have for a discrimination lawsuit against [Restaurant Name].
  • Provide support for each ground selected and then provide arguments that [Restaurant Name] could make to counter each claim.
  • Explain how your answer might change if the restaurant only employs a total of 12 people.

Scenario 3 – Secured Transactions and Bankruptcy

Bayside Restaurant Supplies agreed to sell 10 new commercial coffee makers and 5 freezers to [Restaurant Name] for $27,500. Bayside retained a security interest in the equipment.  [Restaurant Name] agreed to pay for the equipment in equal installments over 48 months.

  • Evaluate Bayside’s rights as a creditor if [Restaurant Name] files bankruptcy 18 months after purchasing the equipment.
  • Discuss Bayside’s rights as a creditor if [Restaurant Name] sold the 2 refrigerators and 5 coffee makers for $750 approximately 30 days prior to filing bankruptcy.
  • Explain how a failure by Bayside to file a financing statement might impact the outcome of both scenarios.

Scenario 4 – Insurance and Agency

Dylan is a delivery driver for [Restaurant Name]. While delivering orders within the scope of employment, Dylan rear-ended a car driven by Vickie Talley. Dylan was insured by State Farm and his policy contained the following information.

Exclusions—What is not Covered

State Farm will not pay for any damages an insured person is legally obligated to pay because of:

Bodily injury or property damage arising out of the use of your insured auto while used to carry persons or property for a charge, or any auto you are driving while available for hire by the public.

  • Analyze the liability on the part of Dylan, Vickie, State Farm and [Restaurant Name]. Be sure to cover issues related to both insurance and agency.

Scenario 5 – Consumer Protection

[Restaurant Name] does not publish the prices of drinks on the menus. Nik Carlson, a customer of the restaurant filed a lawsuit claiming that failure to provide drink prices on the menu constitutes an unfair business practice because customers must make quick decisions about ordering drinks after asking about the price. Another plaintiff, Joe Swanson, claimed that he was not provided with a cost for his drink until after he ordered it, which constitutes consumer fraud.

  • Analyze the applicability of state and/or federal consumer protection laws that Carlson and Swanson can assert against [Restaurant Name]. Select which party should win and support your answer.

Scenario 6 – Liability on Negotiable Instruments

Andrews and Brown hired a bookkeeper, Jenice, and gave her general authority to issue company checks drawn on SunTrust Bank so that Jenice can pay employees’ wages and other company bills. Jenice decides to cheat her employers out of $10,000 by issuing a check payable to the Bayside Distributors, one of the suppliers of seafood and fresh local produce. Jenice does not intend for Bayside to receive any of the money, nor is Bayside entitled to the payment. Jenice endorses the check in Bayside’s name and deposits the check in an account that she opened at Wells Fargo Bank in the name “Bayfood Dist. Co.” Wells Fargo accepts the check and collects payment from the drawee bank, SunTrust.  SunTrust charges [Name of Restaurant] account $10,000.  Denice transfers $10,000 out of the Bayside account and closes it. [Name of Restaurant] discovers the fraud and demands that the bank return the money.

  • Evaluate which party or parties bear the loss.

Scenario 7 – Breach of Contract and Remedies

Andrews ordered 20 round tables to seat parties of two, 25 square tables to seat parties of four, 5 tables to seat larger parties and 175 chairs. The tables were specially ordered to contain the logo of the restaurant on the top of each table.  Andrews paid for the entire shipment when placing the order; however, the supplier was responsible for making the shipping arrangements. The tables and chairs arrived three weeks later; however, five were scratched and damaged. Seven of the chairs were missing.

  • Analyze the restaurant’s options related to the damaged tables and missing chairs. Be sure to address the applicability of the UCC to the transaction.

Recommendations

Conclude your paper by justifying suggestions for [Restaurant Name] to help prevent future occurrences of these types of legal problems.  Identify any ethical issues you find and present recommendations as  applicable. Be specific in your recommendations

Coffee Problem lab.

Lab 01: Coffee Problem

Purpose of Experiment: To perform specific heat calculations and check those calculations using the virtual lab example.

Deliverables:

· A screenshot of the correct answer and all calculations and explanations

Instructions:

For this lab assignment, you will need to read the instructions for the Metals Density Problem on the ChemCollective website. After you complete this reading, return to this assignment to read an example problem that will help you to complete the lab on the ChemCollective page.

Go to lab page: http://chemcollective.org/activities/autograded/115

To complete the lab, all calculations and an explanation of how you will make the coffee must be shown in the provided box below the virtual lab. Once the green check box is clicked and the lab shows you have a correct answer, take a screen shot and submit the screenshot of the lab for your grade.

Lab Assistance:

The following will help you to complete out the Coffee Problem lab.

All glassware used in this lab (even the pipets) must be insulated. Once the coffee and milk are selected, you must change the temperature to the initial temperature and insulate the glassware or it will quickly lose temperature.

Hint: the coffee is in an insulated travel mug, so no heat escapes. To insulate a piece of glassware in Virtual Lab, Mac-users should command-click (or open-apple click) on the beaker or flask; Windows users should right click on the beaker or flask. From the menu that appears, choose “Thermal Properties.” Check the box labeled “insulated from surroundings.” The temperature of the solution in that beaker or flask will remain constant.

All calculations and an explanation of how you will make the coffee must be shown in the provided box below the virtual lab. Once the green check box is clicked and the lab shows you have a correct answer, take a screen shot and submit the screenshot of the lab for your grade.

Example question and calculation:

You decided to make hot water for your favorite flavored tea drink. The water, after boiling, was at about 98 ˚C when you poured it over the tea bags. You now have 100 mL hot tea at 98 ˚C and want to dilute the tea and bring it to room temperature at about 25 ˚CTo make the tea to the correct temperature, you will add a portion of cold water at a temperature of 5 ˚C. How much cold water should you add to the hot tea water? (Hint: the density of tea and water is 1 g/mL and the specific heat of tea and water is 4.184 J/g∙˚C).

First convert the volume to mass using density:

100mL⋅1g1mL=100g100mL⋅1g1mL=100g

Next, use the following equation: q=m×C×ΔTq=m×C×∆T. This problem requires an endothermic and an exothermic reaction; therefore the equation is modified: q=−qq=−q. The cold water absorbs heat and is the endothermic reaction; therefore, the cold water portion is the qq. The tea temperature being brought down is releasing heat and therefore is the −q−q side of the equation. Now we can substitute the m×C×ΔTm×C×∆T for each qq, making sure to keep the signs of each qq.

(m×C×ΔT)=−(m×C×ΔT)(m×C×∆T)=−(m×C×∆T)

(m×C×(Tf−Ti))=−(m×C×(Tf−Ti))(m×C×(Tf−Ti))=−(m×C×(Tf−Ti))

(m×4.184Jg⋅℃×(25℃−5℃))=−(100g×4.184Jg⋅℃×(25℃−98℃))(m×4.184Jg⋅℃×(25℃−5℃))=−(100g×4.184Jg⋅℃×(25℃−98℃))

(m×4.184Jg⋅℃×(20℃))=−(100g×4.184Jg⋅℃×(−73℃))(m×4.184Jg⋅℃×(20℃))=−(100g×4.184Jg⋅℃×(−73℃))

(m×83.68Jg)=−(−30,543.2J)(m×83.68Jg)=−(−30,543.2J)

(m×83.68Jg)=30,543.2J(m×83.68Jg)=30,543.2J

m=30,543.2J83.68Jg=365gm=30,543.2J83.68Jg=365g

Convert the grams into mL with the density: 365g×1mL1g=365mL365g×1mL1g=365mL

Once you have completed the calculation, check you work by doing the virtual lab as explained.
