CDEV 108 Foundations Assignment 50 points

For this assignment, you may work alone or with one classmate. Using the California Preschool Learning Foundations, students will complete an assignment which focuses on practical application of The Foundations.

What are the Foundations? “The California Preschool Learning Foundations outline key knowledge and skills that most children can achieve when provided with the kinds of interactions, instruction, and environments that research has shown to promote early learning and development. The foundations can provide early childhood educators, parents, and the public with a clear understanding of the wide range of knowledge and skills that preschool children typically attain when given the benefits of a high-quality preschool program. “

Description taken from the CA Dept. of Ed. website on August 25, 2015 from: http://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/cd/re/psfoundations.asp

Focus of each volume: Each of the volumes focuses on a different domain or area of development: Where to find The Foundations: Access to The Foundations can be found online at http://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/cd/re/psfoundations.asp. You can google the wording California Preschool Learning Foundations to also get this information. Hardcopies will be on reserve in The Teacher Resource Room (ArtB 313) during their hours of operation. Assignment Directions: Students will locate (or design) a toy for a 4-5 year old preschooler that will help them develop age appropriate developmental skills (language, cognitive, physical, and/or social/emotional). You may receive up to 10 extra credit points if you make the toy. (5 points each if you have a partner). If you make the toy, please bring it to class when the assignment is due. Make a handout that includes the following information:

A. Take a picture of your toy (or provide a photo from the Internet or magazine) and

commercialized toys (ie: Barbie, Mickey Mouse, etc.) will be accepted. Your activity

can be one that is explored indoors or outdoors.

B. State the toy’s name.

C. State the age for which you will focus on for this assignment. Your answer will

determine which column (in the books) you will use for this assignment.

D. Directions: State possible ways that a child might use or explore the toy.

E. Explain how this toy is developmentally appropriate for preschoolers. It should be

visually appealing, non-toxic, non-breakable, neutral, re-useable, non-biased

material. The toy should meet a child’s needs and purposes, consider their social

and cultural background, etc. Children should be able to manipulate or explore the

materials with their hands (not just look at them).

F. Which Preschool Learning Foundation(s) most closely match your toy?

In what area(s) of development (domains) will it help develop and how? Be sure to

include a minimum of four (4) foundations from at least three (3) domains (don’t

just list all physical development areas) and explain how the terms tie to your toy.

Define each foundation. (Refer to example on next page). Be sure to underline the

domains and bold the foundations. Add the volume and page number for each

foundation too.

 Physical Development (gross motor skills such as using legs/arms or fine

motor skills such as using fingers)

 Cognitive Development (includes memory skills, strategic and critical

thinking skills, science, and attention span. It includes math skills such as

counting, adding/subtracting, sorting, and matching. It also includes

Language skills such as speaking, writing, reading, and listening.)

 Social Development (taking turns, etc.)

 Emotional Development (self-esteem, self-confidence, feelings, etc.)

——————————————————————————————————————-

*Please include a title page which states the assignment title, your name, class, date, and

instructor. Be sure to write using complete/full sentences and use the word “children”

rather than “kids” (which is a slang term). A self-evaluation (on page 6) is also required for

this assignment.

*If you have a partner, only one (1) copy of the assignment is needed. I do not need a copy

from each partner.

*Have fun and be prepared to possibly share and discuss your toy with the class

Three Days to Have the Complete Gift of Life

Three Days to Have the Complete Gift of Life

Most of us take our endowed physical and emotional abilities for granted.  We do not think what we would do and how we would conduct ourselves without our limbs and other abilities such as eyesight, hearing/speaking, thinking, and reasoning.

Imagine you were born with a major disability; for example, you have never seen the environment and your loved ones or heard the sounds of nature, music, and the people around you.  Then, one day, you wake up and miraculously discover that you have the ability to see or hear, but it will only last three days.  What would you do under such a circumstance? What events, experiences, and associations, would you try to crowd into those three days?

Your composition should comprise at least three pages.  This is not a research essay; it is rather an evaluation of your creativity, imagination, critical thinking skills, and metacognition.  Hence, you should not include any in-text citations or Works Cited.  Please edit and revise your essay before uploading the final copy on e-Campus.

Please read the article three days to see by Helen keller and follow the instructions on the prompt to write an essay of two to three pages.

Statistical software package to complete the analysis of Exploratory Data Analysis and Inferential Statistics

Purpose:

This project is to help you apply concepts to real world, real data analysis. In the real world computers do most of the hard work for statisticians.  This project will help you understand how an informative decision is made using data analysis.  After completing this project, you should be able to determine which statistical procedures are appropriate; and use StatCrunch to carry out the procedures and interpret the output.

Directions:

  • In an article in the Journal of Statistics Education (vol. , no 2), Allen Shoemaker describes a study that was reported in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA). It is generally accepted that the mean temperature of an adult human is 98.6°F. In his article, Shoemaker uses the data from the JAMA article to test his hypothesis. The data for the JAMA article were collected from healthy men and women, ages 18 to 40, at the University of Maryland Center for Vaccine Development, Baltimore. [Elementary Statistics: Picturing the World by Ron Larson and Betsy Farber 7th Ed.]
  • Data: Click on “StatCrunch” on MyLab Statistics, then “Data sets from the textbook”. Scroll down to Chapter 7, then click on Chapter 7: Case Study: Human Body Temperature: What’s Normal?

Do all of the work below with the “Women” data set  Download “Women” data set.

  • Use a statistical software package to complete the analysis of Exploratory Data Analysis and Inferential Statistics. You are strongly encouraged to use StatCrunch (in MyLab Statistics).  You may also use any other software packages (s.a. MINITAB, or SPSS). However, if you use other software, you are on your own, for your instructor will only help with question with regards to StatCrunch.

A) Exploratory Data Analysis

  1. Construct a stem and leaf display.
  2. Construct a histogram.
  3. Construct a boxplot and use it to investigate the data for outliers.
  4. Obtain the sample mean, median, mode, and standard deviation.

B) Inferential Statistics

  1. Construct a normal probability plot or quantile-quantile (QQ) plot to assess normality. Use this assessment to determine which tests are appropriate for these data for confidence interval and test of hypothesis as you will use these procedures for parts 2 and 3 below.
  2. Construct a 95% confidence interval for µ, for mean body temperature for all adult females in the population.
  3. At the 5% significance level, do the data provide sufficient evidence to conclude that the mean body temperature of women is 98.6°F?
  4. Using the software output, perform the confidence interval and the full hypothesis test.
  • Write a summary and findings of the project

C) Write-up

  • Write a brief introduction of the project.
  • Interpret the mean, and standard deviation in context of the data given.
  • Compare the measures of center and comment on which measure of center would best describe the data given.
  • Comment on the shape of the distribution.
  • Are there any outliers in the data? Include results of your investigation for outliers.
  • Comment on your assessment of normality.
  • Which test will be most appropriate for the inferential statistics? Z-test or t-test? Why?
  • Write an interpretation for the confidence interval estimate in context of the data.
  • State the hypothesis (the null and the alternative)
  • State the conclusion and summary of the significance test and interpret the p-value using the context of the data.
  • Compare the results from the confidence interval and the significance test. Are they the same? Why do think this is the case?
  • Submit your project as an attachment via the link above using the following format in a Microsoft Word or pdf document
    • First page – Title page including your name, course number, and section number
    • Second page – Write – up (See Part C)
    • Final pages – Statistical Software Output and Additional Work (See Parts A and B)

Note:

  1. You must use complete sentences and correct grammar/spelling.
  2. Use StatCrunch to generate tables and graphs for analysis.
  3. Title and Label all of the graphs obtained.

For even if the good is the same for a city as for an individual, still the good of the city is apparently a greater and more complete good to acquire and preserve

AT LEAST 300 WORKS

“For even if the good is the same for a city as for an individual, still the good of the city is apparently a greater and more complete good to acquire and preserve, For while it is satisfactory to acquire and preserve the good even for an individual, it is finer and more divine to acquire and preserve it for a people and for cities.” (Aristotle, 2).

Based on what we have covered up until this point as to what he considers the highest good to be, what do you think Aristotle is saying in this passage? How might this perspective impact the kinds of virtues/virtuous actions that we should aim towards? Do you think this perspective is correct? Be sure to support your answer using Aristotle’s ethics and draw connections to other material we have covered in class.

Begin by reviewing the video found in the Module Resources folder. This video will be used for all project milestones. The project milestones will allow you to practice sections of your final project (a Field Notes and Incident Report) before it is due in Module Seven. The video used for the milestones is different than the video used in Module Seven for your final project.

In this milestone, you will practice taking field notes. This is a practice task for the field notes section of the final project.

Scenario: You are the primary officer assigned to complete a report about this incident. Assemble a list of field notes based on your observations and on information that you consider to be necessary for the formulation of your report. Remember you will not be able to ask any questions, but keep in mind the information that you want to make note of.
