How would you differentiate a discrete from a continuous random variable?

Many business activities generate data that can be thought of as random. An example described in the textbook is the servicing of cars at an oil change shop. Each car entering the shop can be considered an experiment with random outcomes. A variable of interest in this experiment could be the amount of time necessary to service the car. Service time will vary randomly with each car.

We can often capture the most relevant characteristics of a stochastic process with a simple probability distribution model. We can then analyze the model to make predictions and drive decisions. For instance, we could estimate the number of technicians the oil change shop needs to service demand on a Saturday afternoon. Discuss the following:

  • What is a random variable?
  • How would you differentiate a discrete from a continuous random variable?

A laptop manufacturing company has implemented a 2-step process to test the quality of each production batch. In the first step, a technician randomly selects 15 laptops from the batch and determines whether they meet specifications. The batch is considered acceptable provided no more than 1 laptop fails to meet specifications. Otherwise, the entire batch must be tested in the second step. Historical data shows that 95% of the laptops produced adhere to specifications. Discuss the following:

  • What are the 4 characteristics of a binomial experiment?
  • Can we use a binomial distribution to model this process?
  • What is the probability that the entire batch unnecessarily has to be tested if in fact 95% of its laptops conform to specifications? (Hint: Use Excel’s =BINOMDIST() function to find the probability.)
  • What is the probability that the batch is incorrectly accepted if only 75% of its laptops conform to specifications?

Policy and Procedures
Continuous improvement (CI) is at the core of the management strategy of XYZ, and it is recognised as a competitive factor in the marketplace.
CI covers all aspects of the operation of XYZ driving organisational excellence to improve value delivery to all XYZ stakeholders, including both clients and employees.
By implementing a culture of continuous improvement, the company will:

1) Every area Manager is responsible for conducting a performance audit once/year and to present its findings to the CEO
2) Client and employees surveys are conducted regularly, and the results of the surveys are presented to the CEO to be discussed in the monthly management meeting
3) Complaints are an opportunity for constructive feedback to improve performance standards
4) The Marketing department is responsible for conducting external business environment analysis to monitor trends, technology and standards relevant to the industry
5) Attendance to conferences and networking events is encouraged to gather ideas for improvement
6) Professional development of staff on quality management practices is part of the management development plans
7) Quality Circle groups work cross-functionally in the organisation (with meetings scheduled each month)

The project team has now implemented CI initiatives planned for in Task 2 to improve sustainable work practices.
Consider the following data and information:
1 Overall satisfaction with the implementation:
• 50% Totally satisfied
• 50% Somewhat satisfied
2 You have received the following feedback:
• The Project Sponsor wants all reports printed out; this is against the paperless initiative
• It would be a good idea to provide project team members with Ipads to facilitate paperless work
• Some team members still use disposable coffee cups when buying take away coffees
• All team members bring food from home using reusable containers
• Food is often left in the fridge for days, and it is always the same team member who has to empty the food containers and wash them
• When the order for LED lights bulbs was placed, it was denied by the CFO. He thinks that they are expensive.
• The advice to put computers in hibernation mode if taking a break or go to a meeting was successful; however, sometimes team members still forget.
• It would be a good idea to introduce the use of brown bins to recycle food waste.
• The CI register is not regularly updated.
3 The Project Sponsor is impressed with the implementation of the CI initiatives and would like to extend the improvements across the business.
However, the Board of Directors does not quite understand sustainability, and they may think that improving sustainable work practices may come at a price.
A. Review Feedback
Meet with the project team in week 5 of class and review the feedback received on the implementation of the continuous improvement initiatives.
In collaboration with the team:
• Determine how to address the feedback (all feedback must be addressed: how to improve the implementation of the CI initiatives based on feedback).
• Determine how the planning and operations of CI initiatives could be improved.
• Identify areas for further improvement. For example, work arrangements to improve work-life balance, engagement with the community to support non-for-profit work, reduce water consumption, consider how to improve the supply chain to work with sustainable suppliers, change the procurement policy to only buy energy-efficient products etc.…
• Identify key actions and assign responsibility for the implementation.
Duration: 30-45 minutes.
The trainer and assessor will validate your participation in the meeting and provide feedback on the Marking Sheet.
If you are absent from class, you are responsible for making alternative arrangements with the trainer and assessor to review the feedback and identify areas for further improvements.

• All team members bring food from home using reusable containers
• Food is often left in the fridge for days, and it is always the same team member who has to empty the food containers and wash them
• When the order for LED lights bulbs was placed, it was denied by the CFO. He thinks that they are expensive.

• Identify key actions and assign responsibility for the implementation.
Duration: 30-45 minutes.
The trainer and assessor will validate your participation in the meeting and provide feedback on the Marking Sheet.

Look at the distribution of the continuous variables in the data set using PROC UNIVARIATE, including producing histograms and insets with means, standard deviations and sample size

1. Performing a One-Sample t-Test

The data in STAT1.NormTemp come from an article in the Journal of Statistics Education by Dr. Allen L. Shoemaker from the Psychology Department at Calvin College. The data are based on an article in a 1992 edition of JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association), which questions the notion that the true mean body temperature is 98.6. There are 65 males and 65 females. There is also some question about whether mean body temperatures for women are the same as for men. The variables in the data set are as follows:

ID Identification number

BodyTemp Body temperature (degrees Fahrenheit)

Gender Coded (MaleFemale)

HeartRate Heart rate (beats per minute)

a. Look at the distribution of the continuous variables in the data set using PROC UNIVARIATE, including producing histograms and insets with means, standard deviations and sample size.

b. Perform a one-sample t-test to determine whether the mean of body temperatures (the variable BodyTemp in STAT1.NormTemp) is 98.6. Produce a confidence interval plot of BodyTemp with the value 98.6 used as a reference.

1) What is the value of the t statistic and the corresponding p-value?

2) Do you reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis at the 0.05 level that the average temperature

2. Using PROC TTEST for Comparing Groups

Elli Sagerman, a Masters of Education candidate in German Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2000, collected data for a study. She looked at the effectiveness of a new type of foreign language teaching technique on grammar skills. She selected 30 students to receive tutoring; 15 received the new type of training during the tutorials and 15 received standard tutoring. Two students moved away from the district before completing the study. Scores on a standardized German grammar test were recorded immediately before the 12-week tutorials and then again 12 weeks later at the end of the trial. Sagerman wanted to see the effect of the new technique on grammar skills. The data are in the STAT1.GERMAN data set.

Change Change in grammar test scores

Group The assigned treatment, coded Treatment and Control

Analyze the data using PROC TTEST. Assess whether the treatment group improved more than the control group.

a. Do the two groups appear to be approximately normally distributed?

b. Do the two groups have approximately equal variances?

c. Does the new teaching technique seem to result in significantly different change scores compared with the standard technique?
