Correlation between Extracurricular Activities and Academic Performance

An Annotated Bibliography is a summary or evaluation of sources. The summary typically contains a discussion on the point of the book or article, an evaluation of the source, and finally a reflection. For this assignment, you will create an annotated bibliography of 6 research articles from peer-reviewed or scholarly sources that relate to your topic as defined in the Unit 1 assignment. The topic is (Correlation between Extracurricular Activities and Academic Performance).   You will be able to use this assignment to write your literature review which is due at the end of this Unit.

To get started on this assignment first read Chapter 2: Types of Sources, Chapter 5: Search Tools, Chapter 6: Evaluating Sources, and Chapter 8: How to Cite Sources from your Citing Sources (2020) textbook. As you read through the chapters, be sure to view the embedded video clips within the chapters. For a sample of an Annotated Bibliography refer to the Purdue Online Writing Lab (n.d.) Annotated Bibliography Samples. Be sure to scroll down to the APA example.

Next, (if you have access) watch the optional video from UWlibraries which will provide you an explanation and examples of what a scholarly article includes.

Note: there are two parts to this assignment.

Part One: Conduct a scholarly search for 6 peer-reviewed or scholarly sources based on your chosen topic from Unit 1.

Part Two: Create an Annotated Bibliography (should be in list format) of 6 sources related to your topic from Unit 1. Your Annotated Bibliography should include:

1. The full APA citation for the source including the web link.

2. In one paragraph, for each source

  • Discuss the point or main thesis of the source.
  • Evaluate the source for reliability and how it compares to other sources in your Annotated Bibliography.
  • Analyze the source for its relevance to your study.

Your Discussion should be a minimum of 250 words in length and not more than 450 words. Please include a word count. Following the APA standard, use references and in-text citations for the textbook and any other sources.

One of the major misconceptions about correlation is that a relationship between two variables means causation; that is, one variable causes changes in the other variable. There is a particular tendency to make this causal error, when the two variables seem to be related to each other.

Linear regression is used to predict the value of one variable from another variable. Since it is based on correlation, it cannot provide causation. In addition, the strength of the relationship between the two variables affects the ability to predict one variable from the other variable; that is, the stronger the relationship between the two variables, the better the ability to do prediction.

illusory correlation is also to blame for many stereotypes

Illusory correlations occurs when we believe that two unrelated variables have a relationship between each other.

An example of illusory correlations is an individual who goes to an interview wearing a bright green tie. The individual gets the job and attributes it to his bright green tie. Even though he was wearing a new shirt, new pants and new shoes. He was more than qualified for the position but the bright green tie was more distinctive and easier to recognize giving credit to.

This illusory correlation is also to blame for many stereotypes. In many cases defaulting to the color of our skin, sex, age, and other features.

Illusory correlation is a bit like stereotyping or overly generalizing something depending on our experiences with it. I have heard on the radio and other places, a common joke about Asian women being bad or timid drivers. I don’t know how this came about, I have personally never even looked at, or thought about a bad drivers ethnicity or appearance. This is illusory to me because one or a few bad drivers does not make all people of that gender or race bad drivers.

Medical researchers conducted a study on the correlation between the use of fertility drugs and ovarian cancer.  Their study, published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, concludes that the use of the fertility drugs, Pergonal and Serophene, may increase the risk of ovarian cancer by three times.  The lead author of the studies, Professor Alice Whittemore, stated, “Our finding in regard to fertility drugs is by no means certain.  It is based on very small numbers and is really very tenuous.”

FDA Commissioner David Kessler would like the infertility drug manufacturers to disclose the study findings and offer a warning on the drug packages.  He notes, “Even though the epidemiology study is still preliminary, women have a right to know what is known.  We’re not looking to make more of this than there is.”
