Cowspiracy

The increasing cases of draught and the ever-increasing demands of water have led to many questions regarding the sustainability efforts being put in place (Peralta, Reynolds, & Kerr, 2014). The documentary “Cowspiracy” details the shocking revelations of the impact of animal agriculture on water sustainability (Williams, 2016) . The main argument of the film is that animal agriculture is responsible for the consumption of enormous amounts of water and environmental pollution than humanity and machines combined.

According to the documentary film, the animal agriculture is responsible for 51% of greenhouse gas emissions (Williams, 2016) . This happens because when animals consume feeds, they emit methane gas during the digestion process. The methane gas is a more powerful agent of global warming than carbon dioxide. Moreover, raising animals for consumption consumes 33% (a third) of global water reserves. This happens because animals consume more water than human beings do. In addition, there are more animals compared to human population and given that, it requires more water to produce beef and other animal products, the overall consumption of water by animals stand at over 130 times than the entire human population consume.           Raising animals for food consumes nearly 45% of the earth’s land (Williams, 2016) . This happens mainly because it requires 10g of vegetable protein to produce 1g of animal protein, meaning more land is needed in order to sustain the large animal population. According to the film, compared to soybean production, land requirements are 6-7 are larger for the production of meat protein. Finally, the documentary points that raising animals for meat production is responsible for 91% of the Amazon destruction. This happens because the forests are being cleared to create more grazing fields and to provide land to plant s……………………………..…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
