            As nurses, we are bound to witness incivility in the workplace since we interact with many people of all works of life regardless of the setting. Studies have showed that incivility can create the working environment very toxic, thus generating negative outcomes. Therefore, it is imperative for nurses to be able to identify and point out incivility and take the necessary steps to rectify the problem appropriately(Rainford, et al., 2017). As a Family Nurse Practitioners (FNP), it is my role and ethical obligation to provide leadership in the workplace. This paper discussed incivility and the methods to promote a healthy work environment.

Issue of Incivility

            The workplace environment especially health care field can be hostile when it is highly regulated and regimented levels of bureaucracy, sizable workloads, and stringent norms of behavior. These incivilities make the workplace very stressful, crisis oriented, and chaotic, thus leading to team breakdown, hostility, and directs anger(Reynolds, et al., 2014). This type of working environment creates incivility or lateral violence. Incivility is defined as behavior intended to purposefully demean, humiliate, or diminish a victim which leads to social isolation and marginalization in the workplace.
