Describe who the suppliers and demanders are in the labor market. Is a government-mandated minimum wage a price floor or ceiling?

select only 1 of the following options and answer each of the questions related to that option. Your responses should be thorough and well supported. You are encouraged to use our textbook and the online book for this class, which is called Popular Economyths

A good, well-reasoned, detailed answer should be at least 1.5 to 2 pages (total) in length (and please do NOT rewrite the questions). You need to answer each of the questions for the option you select.

OPTION 1 – The Minimum Wage

Since 2009, the national minimum wage has been $7.25 per hour for most occupations in the private sector. Many of those who support an increase in the minimum wage believe this is one way the government could possibly reduce poverty, while its opponents believe that it creates unemployment and hurts low-skilled workers. The following items address the idea of raising the minimum wage from the current federal minimum of $7.25 per hour.

1) Describe who the suppliers and demanders are in the labor market. Is a government-mandated minimum wage a price floor or ceiling? Discuss the effect of a minimum wage law from a supply and demand standpoint, making sure to address the concept of surplus or shortage, and specify what that shortage or surplus is most commonly called in economic terms.

2) Raising the minimum wage will also affect the labor costs of businesses. What is going to happen to the prices these businesses charge for their products? And who is going to be most affected by these price changes, those with low incomes or those with high incomes?

3) Discuss any potential changes in the incentives for low-skilled workers – those who keep their jobs and their hours – to increase their human capital when the minimum wage increases. What about those who lose their jobs or never get hired? Discuss the incentives for employers to substitute capital inputs (technology and automation) for labor.

4) What might be an unintended impact on government spending on entitlements such as welfare, food stamps, and unemployment compensation because of the changes in the minimum wage and its impact on unemployment and underemployment?

5) Do advocates of a minimum wage law believe that workers should be paid based on their output (i.e., performance) or on their level of need? What do opponents of the minimum wage law believe workers’ wages should be based on? Which one is sustainable and why?

For the sake of comparison, how should students be graded in class, based on their performance or level of need?

6) Advocates of a minimum wage often believe that employers would “exploit” or “take advantage” of their workers if there were no minimum wage. How would you know if employers are “taking advantage” of their workers if there were no minimum wage? What simple thing could the employee do if they believed they were being exploited?

7) What percentage of American workers get paid above minimum wage? In general, why do such workers get paid more than the government-mandated minimum wage if employers are supposedly so greedy?

8) Compare and contrast some of the information contained in the three videos:

Obama: “Raise Minimum Wage to $9 an Hour” – SOTU 2013

How the Minimum Wage Creates Unemployment – Note: this video uses an example of a $5 minimum wage as an illustration only. The same exact point could be made with a minimum wage of $7.25, $9, $12.37, or any other amount, so please do not get hung up on the $5 amount. The point is whether or not the government ought to dictate the wages of a private transaction between a willing employee and employer.

We the Internet TV: Pledge for $15

Describe the main points of each video. Which one or two videos do you agree with more from an economic perspective and why? Be specific!

9) Based on your previous responses, do you believe that the minimum wage should be raised, lowered, remain as it currently is, or be altogether eliminated? If you think there should be a minimum wage, how would you arrive at the specific wage? You need to give a thorough reason for your answer. Who should get to decide how much a worker gets paid, the worker and their employer or a politician? WHY?

OPTION 2 – Taxes

It has been said that nothing in life is guaranteed except for death and taxes. The next questions ask about the three tax structures as well as rate rates.

1) A lot of students say that some people pay “more (or less) in taxes” than others, but they often confuse tax rates (percentages) with the amount of tax paid (in dollars). Be sure to answer questions in this option with references to the differences between taxes paid in dollars versus percentages.

Please state whether you prefer a progressive, regressive, or flat (proportional) tax system and WHY. Is your preference more in accordance with the concept of equality of opportunity (which is equal treatment) or equality of outcome (which is unequal treatment)? BE SPECIFIC. Which tax system incentivizes taxpayers to earn more money and which structure disincentivizes taxpayers to work harder and earn more money.

2) Please write about marginal tax rates and whether you believe they need to be changed in general. More specifically,

A) If you believe in a flat tax rate system, should income tax rates be raised or lowered?

B) If, however, you think a progressive tax rate is best:

i) should taxes on low-income earners be raised or lowered?

ii) should taxes on average-income earners be raised or lowered?

iii) should taxes on high-income earners be raised or lowered?

C) If, however, you think a regressive tax rate is best:

i) should taxes on low-income earners be raised or lowered?

ii) should taxes on average-income earners be raised or lowered?

iii) should taxes on high-income earners be raised or lowered?

Regardless of which you chose (A, B, or C) be sure to give your reasons WHY you feel the way that you do.

3) Please explain HOW the tax rate changes (the increase or decrease you advocated for in Questions #2 above) will affect each of the following:

a)  economic growth: job creation, investment, incentives to work more, and tax avoidance

b)  the budget: the difference between tax revenue and government spending

   c) economic “fairness”

Your answer needs to have a discussion related to the Laffer Curve, especially with respect to the budget (and to government revenue in particular). In addition, please give your definition of economic “fairness” and WHY you believe that.

4) Please watch the following two videos:

Robert Reich: Why Taxes Have to be Raised on the Rich

Is America’s Tax System Fair?

Describe the main points of each video in detail. Which video do you agree with more? Please describe WHY. Which video recommends treating people equally and which one does not?

5) Please read the following articles:

What You Don’t Know About the Top One Percent

Tax Foundation: Latest Federal Income Tax Data

Describe the main points of each article in detail.

Based upon the two articles: By income percentile group, who doesn’t pay their “fair share” of taxes and who pays more than their “fair share” in your opinion? How do you arrive at that opinion?

Procedural Steps in Criminal Trial

Although criminal procedures vary based on jurisdictions, basic criminal trial procedures are the same. The formal process that charges an individual often involves the jury indictment or when a prosecutor files information in court. Once this has been done, the defendant is arraigned in a court of law where they enter into plea of nolo contendere (plea of not guilty) or plea of guilty (Scheb & Scheb, 2014). It is the plea of nolo contendere that makes one stand for trial. This is when the individual knows they have the standing to appear in a court of law.

The trial process is governed by rules of procedure, which sets out elaborate processes for determining whether an individual is guilty or not. Once a defendant is to stand trial, a pretrial conference is scheduled one week before the actual criminal trial begins (Bergman, 2018). At the pretrial hearings, several issues are determined and rule by the pretrial court. Some of the issues determined and rule include rules for case proceedings, scheduled for trial and other pretrial matters, evidence that should and that should not be concluded can be argued by parties, witnesses to be allowed, venues for trial, and right to counsel if the defendant is not represented at a pretrial hearing.

The establishment of the pretrial procedures is important in the administration of justice. During the establishment of pretrial procedures, several issues are resolved that ensure dispensation of justice to the defendant (American Bar Association, 2020). The procedures are critical in resolving matters that allow for the efficient running of the trial process. It is during this step in the trial process that all the parties involved exchange important information that could make them be prepared if the matter proceeds to full trial. Also, it is during the pre-trial process that judges receive information about the issues and the parties involved and to establish their authority over the trial process.             The criminal trial process can be considered to be complete if it has six steps; choice of the jury, issuing of the opening statement, cross-examination and issuing of testimonies, closing arguments, jury instruction, and issue of the verdict after jury deliberation (Arizona Supreme Court, 2020). During jury selection, a potential juror will………………………………………………………………………………………………

Scientific Methods of Research Inquiry

The science of research provides a strategy in which problems are understood thus informing policy decisions by providing solutions to the problems under study. According to (Kleck, Tark, & Bellows, 2006) research must be done in a certain way in order to provide objective answers for policy decision making. Scientific method of research inquiry provides techniques of inquiring phenomena to reach objective conclusions. The research process often begins with an inquiry about particular phenomena. Inquiry refers to the rational process of seeking the truth or ending a doubt (Dantzker & Hunter, 2005). Scientific research inquiry can be explanatory, descriptive or predictive. In performing scientific research inquiry, a number of methods can be adopted.

The first method of scientific research inquiry is the process of identification of research problem. According to (Vito, Kunselman, & Tewksbury, 2008, p. 8) research inquiry process begins with the identification of the concern, and the subsequent test of the statements that surrounds it. The common ways in identification of the problem done are induction and deduction. According to the authors, induction involves the use of information collected to make observations and provide a proof that a problem exists, while deduction process involves the use of a theory to explain a research problem and provide a solution to it. An example of problem identification is a research on local gang crimes in the local neighborhood. Currently working for a Sheriff who is an elected official there is quite a bit of politics involved. Even with just random traffic stops people want to strike up a conversation about the politics within the department. It can be rather annoying. I am not a fan of many of the higher ups within the department. Many got there for un-moral reasons and that does not sit well with me that they climbed so high in rank so quickly because they have “dirt” on someone else. It is why I do not have a desire to climb up in rank at this department. Recently I was chosen to be on the Firearms committee to aid in deciding what new pistol, holster and weapon lights we will switch too. For those who are curious we are transitioning from using the Glock 22 to the new G45. Being involved in this committee I have had to swim with the sharks and voice my opinion on many things they did not agree with to fight for what we on the road truly want (new outer level three vest vs out level two inner vest) instead of buying new guns because Glock came out with a new toy. But yes, I do think for good to win from time to time we must face the sharks and stand up for what is right. I lost in the battle for the new vest even though the majority of the committee agreed with me. We are getting shot more and more, if they are going to spend that kind of money why not give us better protection with it; plus solve out back pain so we can wear suspenders to take the weight of 20lbs off our hips, what we actually want. We are proficient with our G22’s and they work great. And eventually if the good sticks around long enough the sharks will have to retire and the department can turn around. Phil Student 2 Good Afternoon Class, 1. Describe to what level you must deal with politics in your current job and how that affects you. The more senior I become in the military the more I see the backside policy issues that leaders face. As a CBRN Marine there are aspects of the job that are lifesaving and have to be backed by an SOP as the approved process. There is a lot of risk to the force when operating in a CBRN environment. Not only is there the traditional threats (bullets and explosions), but now there is WMD or CBRN concerns that alter how a force operates and puts them at a higher risk level. The assumption of the risk comes from higher headquarters. Typically, if an objective has a CBRN risk associated to it, we will just avoid it as there is no reason to increase the likelihood of a casualty. If the objective is deemed necessary then the leadership is staying the juice is worth the squeeze and we are going in. Do go into these environments we issue PPE that protects the assault force. Ensuring none of the gear is expired, the mask properly fits the individuals, and everyone is familiar with the gear they are wearing and the hazards they may be exposed to is just the beginning of the politics. After operating in that environment the personal and their gear (weapons, NVG’s, radios) will be possibly be contaminated. To decontaminate a person they are essentially cut out of their PPE in a very precise manner to mitigate the spread of contamination. Their gear is also decontaminated. There is not a real high fidelity way to verify their cleanliness or their gear. There is detection equipment but to monitor a person head to toe and pick up the negligible amounts of contamination that can adversely affect a person is almost impossible as the technologies just aren’t there yet. A commander (or political leader) has to make judgement calls on possibly quarantine their assault force (bio contamination) or reissuing the gear after it has been possibly contaminated, and then decontaminated. Or deciding if it is not worth the threat to force to issue back prior contaminated stuff, or just destroy it in place if possible. There are a lot of discretionary calls the leadership has to make as to even go into a CBRN environment and some of the considerations after contamination. All of these have SOP’s that if followed to the T can mitigate some of the hard decisions and reinforce the decisions being made. I personally do not deal much with the policies, besides informing the commanders of the risk of the CBRN hazards, things we can do to mitigate the risk (PPE, and training), and additional considerations post assault or contamination. I also ensure the gear is not expired, detectors are up to date, and everyone has the appropriate gear to operate in that environment. 2. If there were direct benefits, such as new equipment or additional personnel being granted, would you be willing and able to ‘swim with the sharks’? If there was additional direct benefits from swimming with the sharks I think I would be willing to do so. I would try to be very prepared for anything and everything prior to swimming. I am not in the senior E8/E9 position yet so in my current position I would typically lobby for the senior leadership to vouch for the need. I have to inform them on why we need the personnel or gear and give them as much ammunition as possible to fight for it before they have their meetings. ……………………………………………………………………….

How could she find out? Describe an experiment that an instructor might actually use

  • Suppose a university teacher wants to know whether or not requiring attendance improves student learning. How could she find out? Describe an experiment that an instructor might actually use.
  • Review the experiments posted by your classmates. Evaluate the pros and cons of their proposals, and when applicable, suggest improvements or ask follow-up questions.

This post I think can really be researched now due to our pandemic situation. Everyone is on virtual learning for the time being but that will be temporary at the same time I think that we could learn from this. I feel this study can apply at any grade level for the student. A teacher can find out if attendance improves learning by dividing her class into groups with different attendance requirements with each group. One group can be required attendance, one group not, and she could do third group with a mix of both attendance requirements (like hybrid). She can then assign the same work/homework to each group for a certain amount of time and once that time is out she can have a test in the end to see her results for her experiment. During the experiment she must make sure that everyone is able to have access to the same materials, readings, supplies, etc. if not then she will not be able to form a conclusion or it will not be accurate because she has limited data. The teacher will base her findings off data and can compare it to other statistical information to validate her hypothesis. Each student should have equivalent work to formulate an accurate conclusion the only difference is the attendance situation during the experiment. Once each student has taken the test and the teacher analyzes her data she can make adjustments to her syllabus and her teaching lessons.

Statistics are an important part of research. As a critical thinker, how important is it to understand what statistics really mean and why?
