Overview
The purpose of this Fact Sheet on Disability Categories Assignment is to produce a Fact Sheet that demonstrates your ability to articulate the characteristics of each of the IDEA recognized categories of disabilities. It is important to know and understand each of the disability categories so you recognize the overall strengths and needs of each and can provide a general description to others.
Instructions
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) guarantees a free appropriate public education to eligible children with disabilities. It specifically identifies 13 categories of disabilities that are entitled to special education services. The different disability categories under which 3- 21-year-olds are eligible for services are:

Using relevant reliable websites and your text, you are to construct a Fact Sheet that explains each of the disability categories in terms that are understandable for the general public.
1. Develop the Fact Sheet as if it would be used to educate parents or others in the general public about disabilities that receive special education services.
2. Include an introduction stating the purpose of the fact sheet and the information provided.
3. Each disability category must be fully defined with characteristics described and sources cited. Most information should be paraphrased and stated in terms the general public would understand.
4. A minimum of three sources should be cited and referenced, one of which should be the textbook. Other acceptable sources include disability organization websites or publications, other textbooks, and scholarly journal articles. Any sources cited should have been published within the last five years.
5. A references page must be included.
6. Citations and the references page must be in current APA format.

Your current position is an educational consultant of English language learners (ELL) and students with disabilities in the New Brookhaven School. (You may determine the level of the school: early childhood, elementary, middle, or high school.) The teachers you are assigned to work with have taught in the school for 5–10 years. Each teacher is set in his or her ways. The test scores on achievement tests for neighborhood typical learning students are average to above average. Students with disabilities are known to be excluded from standardized testing and some classroom activities. Five ELL students have also just arrived at the school from the new community immigrant host program. Parents of the ELL students do not speak English and will need an interpreter to work with the school and communicate with teachers. Two of the ELL students are known for exhibiting behavioral outbursts in class. Several of the students with disabilities also have Behavioral Intervention Plans and are behind academically. Parents of the students with disabilities often complain that their children are not receiving a fair education and are treated differently than their peers. The school has limited technology funding. Your position in the school is to create a learning environment that is educationally sound for the ELL students and students with disabilities.
Instructions
Write an 8–10 page paper in which you:
Summarize a background scenario of the school, teachers, teaching environment, and students.
Explain how you would establish and integrate programs for students with disabilities and ELL students. Research and cite two case law findings that impact programs for students with disabilities and ELL students.
Analyze how school resources and public school funding could be utilized or reappropriated for technology and specialized programs for student learning and engagement. Research and cite one case law finding or legislative act that impacts school resources and public school funding allocations.
Discuss how incidents of behavioral infractions will be addressed.
Recommend how the needs of students and teachers will be met as it relates to student and teacher freedom and safety.
Construct a plan to meet the needs of ELL students, students with disabilities, and their parents.
Explain a strategy for securing technology funding to meet student and teacher technology needs.
Analyze three potential challenges to your proposed plan and explain how you would address these.
Use at least six peer-reviewed academic resources in this assignment including a conversation from a K-12 Administrator. Note: Wikipedia and similar websites do not qualify as academic resources. In 2006, the 130-year-old American Association on Mental Retardation changed its name to the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities because it recognized that within the culture of its membership opinion toward the term mental retardation had turned negative. In its press release, an official noted, “This new name is an idea whose time has come. Individuals with disabilities and family members do not like the term mental retardation and their advocacy is encouraging political and social change at national, state, and local levels. Our members demanded that we keep up with [the] times and they voted for this name change” (American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, 2006).
Like the disabilities field, the field of addictions also relies on terms and labels to diagnose, treat, and intervene. One precaution in working in the field is to understand the controversy surrounding labeling, the effect of labeling on clients, and the influence of cultural context on labels. A consideration affecting assessment and treatment is the underlying model used to inform processes.
This week, you examine the implications of labeling in addictions assessment, and you explore the relationship between addiction models and assessment processes.

Application: Models of Addiction and the Assessment Process
Several models are prominent in the field of addictions; these models include the medical model, moral model, and the biopsychosocial model. A particular model advocated by an addictions professional will influence the professional’s choices of assessment methods and treatment of addiction.
To prepare:
Consider the following definition of addiction by Michael Miller, M.D., former president of the American Society of Addiction Medicine: “At its core, addiction is not just a social problem or a moral problem or a criminal problem. It is a brain problem whose behaviors manifest in all these others areas…The disease is about brains, not drugs. It is about underlying neurology, not outward actions” (Addiction Treatment Magazine, 2011).

A Review of “New Definition of Addiction Causing Controversy among Doctors”
The increased attention that the gravity of addiction has posed for many years, has led to redefinition of the approaches to its treatment. According (Addiction Treatment Magazine, 2011) Dr. Miller, former president of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, addiction is a brain disease. In order to validate his claims, the paper undertakes a review of two articles that either support of dismiss Miller’s claims.
Drug addiction. Is it a disease or is it based on choice? A review of Gene Heyman’s addiction: A disorder of choice. Journal of the Experimental Analysis of Behavior, 95(2), 263–267.
Authored by Gene Heyman and reviewed by Branch in 2012, the article sought to demystify the controversy surrounding the views held on the problem of addiction. The article undertook a review of the surveys on historical, clinical, anthropological, clinical and laboratory basis in order to create their argument regarding the disorder. According to the author, the surveys create compelling statements that conceptualization of addiction is not only erroneous but also misleading. Whilst using the data available, the author points that most drug addicts successfully quit drug-addiction, a fact that was inconsistent with chronic diseases. Therefore, the author concluded that addiction is not a brain disease.

Addiction is a disease Authored by the Addiction Technology Transfer Network, the article asserts that addiction is a chronic mental illness that is comparable in its etiology to that of chronic illness (Addiction Technology Transfer Network, n.d.). The article points that through a literature review that compared the response to treatment, etio……………………………………..
