structural engineer working in a housing project that is building three storey bungalow units

finite element method for civil engineering

You are a structural engineer working in a housing project that is building three storey bungalow units. A typical main frame ABCDEFGH that the architect is proposing is provided in FIGURE Q1. The architect would like to keep the structural elements to a minimum and hence has proposed that it must consist of six columns (AB, BC, CD, EF, FG and GH) of equal length and three beams (BG, CF and DE), also of equal length. The height of the columns, LCC = 3.05 m, the length of the beams, LBB = 5.4m, factored imposed load of FBG kN/m = 3.25 on beam BG, factored imposed load of FCF,DE kN/m = 4.3 on beams CF and DE and a point load of X kN = -55.0  due to wind at beam column junctions B, C and D. As it is easiest to transport to the site, the architect decided to construct the frame from steel and want to fabricate all connections as fixed connections.

1. Your technical director, who believes in optimisation of structures for weight (least material), has asked you to size all of the members of the frame such that no members exceed their yield stress while minimizing the weight of the whole structure. She asked you to use the simple finite element program that you use in the office. Use necessary simplifications backed by solid reasoning and choose only standard steel cross-sections.

2. While you are working on this project at home, your father, who is a retired earthquake specialist, is concerned that you are not considering any dynamic loading. To allay these fears, you have decided to perform a dynamic analysis, the first step of which you have decided will be the computation of mode shapes and their associated frequencies. Compute the frequencies of the first 5 mode shapes and their associated mode shapes by modifying the simple program from QUESTION 1.

3. Once you presented your initial design of the frame, a senior engineer has raised some concerns about the simple beam column finite element solution that you have used. With justification, evaluate the validity of the solution adopted with respect to the structural stability, material behaviour and magnitude of the final deflections

Dion is an engineer with Tesla Motors who helps to design electric motors.

 Instructions

Case Scenario

Dion is an engineer with Tesla Motors who helps to design electric motors. It has always been his dream to start his own business, but as he has gotten older, he has not gotten around to it. He is also an avid cyclist who rides near his home in Palo Alto, California. It is hilly terrain and as he has gotten older, he has found it more difficult to navigate the steep terrain.

He has thought about buying an electric bike that would give him an additional boost with an electric motor. However, he has not been satisfied with any of the many brands of electric bikes he can find. The ones that work well are astronomically expensive and the less expensive models are poorly constructed and have short battery life.

One day at Tesla headquarters, Dion is having lunch with three of his colleagues when he raises his frustration with his inability to find the right electric bike. The other three are also avid cyclists, so they launch into an intense discussion. Mark, who works in Tesla’s marketing department, thinks that there is a demand for a high-quality electric bike at a reasonable cost. “There are social trends that could drive that demand,” he says. “First, commuting by bicycle is becoming more popular, and many who are new to it need that extra assistance to make it a comfortable experience. Also, as the population ages, older cyclists are looking for ways to keep cycling as much as they did when they were younger. An electric bike could help them do that.”

Dion responds that some of the new electric motor technologies he has been working on could be repurposed to create a high-quality electric bike at a reasonable cost. “I have been experimenting with some designs, and I think it is workable.” Rosalinda, who manages production of the Tesla Model S interjects, “You know, I came across a defunct bicycle factory about 20 miles north of here when we were looking at potential sites for expansion. It would be perfect to manufacture the bike you are describing.”

Dion can’t hold back any longer and blurts out, “Let’s start our own bicycle company and make this bike!” Sandra, who works in the finance department, scrunches up her face and says, “Whoa there, partner. Where is the money for this venture going to come from? While our salaries and stock options have made us comfortable, we don’t have the resources to manufacture and market this bike.”

The group agrees that they would love to start a new company, but they must figure out how to solve the finance problem that Sandra pointed out in order to do so. Later that day, Dion can’t get the idea out of his mind. Then, a potential solution comes to him. He remembers Brenda Zhang, who rode with one of his cycling groups, Palo Altitude. She is a partner in a large venture capital firm that invests in promising start-ups. Dion isn’t sure if she even remembers him, and she only knew him as a cyclist, not an engineer. But he thinks it’s worth a try.

He sends the following email:

To: Brenda Zhang
From: Dion Morris
Re: Electric Bicycle Start-Up

Several of my colleagues at Tesla and I have come up with a new design for an electric bicycle that would be relatively inexpensive, very efficient, as well as durable. I know this is coming out of the blue, but I am hoping you will remember me from our rides with the Palo Altitude group. We are looking for start-up funding, and I thought a fellow cyclist like you would see the potential market for a high-quality, inexpensive electric bicycle. Please let me know what you think.

Later that day, he is surprised to find the following email in his inbox:

To: Dion Morris
From: Brenda Zhang
Re: Electric Bicycle Start-Up

Of course, I remember you, Dion. You were always at the head of the pack in our rides. I am intrigued by your idea and would like to set-up a meeting to discuss it. I need to start doing my homework on the venture to see whether I and my partners are willing to provide funding. In preparation for our meeting, I would like you to prepare a memo that addresses the following issues:

  • Why do you think you can create a successful start-up? What traits will you need to be an entrepreneur?
  • What kind of leadership style would you use, and why?
  • Describe your product and why you think there is a market for it.
  • What legal form do you think best suits your start-up and why?
  • What kind of financial document should you provide so that I can evaluate the viability of your start-up?
  • What are the characteristics of your target market?
  • Explain specific types of marketing the business should pursue.
  • What other sources of funding might be available for you, whether or not we invest in your start-up?
  • How would you organize your management team, and who in your group would lead each function in the organization?
  • What brand name do you propose for your electric bike, and why did you choose it?

Please send this to me by next week, at least a day before our meeting. I look forward to our discussion.

You are a good friend of Dion’s. He respects you for your degree in Business and Management and your good business sense. Dion feels inadequate in the details of business and asks you to draft the requested memo for him.

How to Set Up the Memo

You will use the attached project 2 memo template.  The memo template should be single-spaced with a blank line between paragraphs. Write clearly and concisely in 12-point Times New Roman. The final product will be in a business memo format, no longer than eight pages in length (excluding the cover page and references page).

Include a title, the course number and section, your name, and the instructor’s name on your title page.

Instructions

Draft the requested memo under Dion’s name. Draw on the learning resources that are in the classroom to influence your answers. This is not a research-based project, so don’t use any sources other than the course materials.

Review/Proofread your Memo

Read through your memo to ensure all required elements are present and clear.

Submit the Memo in the Assignment Folder

The document you submit to the Assignment Folder will be considered final and ready for grading. Please double-check that you are submitting the correct document.

Network security firm as a professional security engineer

Consider the following scenario: You work for a network security firm as a professional security engineer. You are asked to provide a security and testing assessment document for one of the firm’s customers. The customer is a local fulfillment company that deals with confidential customer information. The fulfillment company has two locations: a headquarters office downtown and a branch office in another city.
The fulfillment company has the following equipment:
-12 Windows XP and 25 Windows 7 workstations connected to a Windows Server 2008 domain controller and file server (The Windows XP personal computers [PCs] are mostly used in the warehouse connected to high-speed printers for employees to spool and print jobs.),
– one Windows Server 2008 R2 RRAS server accessed by home workers after hours,
-one Windows Server 2003 print server,
-one Linux database server running an open source of MySQL,
-one Apache Web server for customers to check status of their jobs/orders online,
-a seven-year-old firewall connecting the headquarters’ network perimeter to a T3 internet line and virtual private network (VPN) connecting to the branch office,
-a 10-year-old firewall in the branch office connecting to the Internet and headquarters via a T1 link,
-15 Windows XP workstations in the branch office connecting to the headquarters office via VPN to the Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controller file and print server.
At the headquarters location, the servers are located in a locked server room that only authorized users can enter. The server room has a four-digit combination lock for security. Both locations have numerous security cameras, including cameras in the computer room.
The network manager has informed you that the fulfillment company has an IT security policy that all employees are required to read and sign when they are hired by the company. The network manager wants to ensure that the network is secure and asks you to provide a statement of work or rules of engagement (ROE) professional security engineer document for a network security assessment.
**Create a document following the Appendix B Template (attached) based on the scenario provided. Your document must be at least three pages in length.

  1. Introduction

With the growing of the use of internet in almost all aspects of business operation, personal and company information continue to become less private and accessible to the public when it is not well protected.  It thus becomes important for companies to set up a security system that can put company privacy safe and protect the company and customer from unforeseen fraud or employees from viruses that would eventually destroy the whole network. It thus becomes inevitable for companies to hire internet privacy consultants to ensure security of their networks are protected.

1.1. Purpose

The main purpose of this document is to come to develop the rules of engagement document that will ensure the security of the company’s network, in addition, the document will contain a security and testing assessment procedures that will ensure the customer private information is protected at all times.

1.2. Scope

To come up with the network security for the company, the activity will involve coming up with a documented system inventory including establishing and listing all the user system boundaries. There will also be documentation of the procedures and policies in regard to the company network operations. The consultant will also identify the list of threats and vulnerabilities in terms of the client privacy and user privacy, including the likelihood and the impact of occurrence.  As part of the scope there consultant will also provide the client with a list that will control and safeguard the security threats and effects of such vulnerabilities. Later the consultant will then provide the client with a list of recommended security implementation that will lead to the reduction of the said risk.  This will also provide information about the level of each security risk and the level of each residual risk including recommended changes(Wheeler, 2011).

Apart from this, this ROE is also going to reflect on the different security objectives and policies with regard to the firm’s management of information technology.  This will be presented in the recurrent meetings with the technical worker and the users in the network among other members of the firm’s team.

1.3. Assumptions and Limitations

Identifies any assumptions made by the organization and the test team.  These may relate to any aspect of the test to include the test team, installation of appropriate safeguards for test systems, etc.

1.4. Risks

Some of the inherent risks during the time of engagement will include:

The security administrators accidentally forgets to log off to the main system thus putting the whole network under threat.

Shared password might make the whole system weak.

The security system pairs with other system making it easy to hack in and steal private information.

Disloyal stuff may also distribute private information to the wrong publics.

Actions

Each member of staff will be required to sign a confidentiality clause about passwords and other private information in the network.

There will be a reminder in the system for all the computers to log off. In addition an automatic log off with be mandatory when the computer system has been idle for more than 2 minutes. This will reduce incidences of security threats.

Administrative password will not be shared with all supervisors and shall be changed after every one week.

Updates in regard to antivirus and anti malware will be done on a daily basis after the offices close down during shut down.
