Noor Naga If an Egyptian Cannot Speak English

Choose one text and one author from the 1st term (although you may refer to other works when appropriate) and focus on an issue (a subject) that particularly interests you.  Using the form of a letter to the author, discuss the issue and identify what especially engaged you in their text, and why.  This might start with a personal reaction but needs to go on to question/explore/interpret the issue. Be specific: support your ideas with examples for the text.

Books you can choose from:

Norma Dunning Tainna: The Unseen Ones

Noor Naga If an Egyptian Cannot Speak English

El Jones Abolitionist Intimacies

Length: 4 – 6 pages (1000 – 1500 words).

Due:  November 7 and Feb 27

Letters to Authors:  Using letter form, write a letter to an author on the course (one from each term). In the letter, discuss an issue or theme arising IN their book and identify what especially engaged you about it, and why.  Taking a position on the issue (your point of view about the issue),  question/explore/interpret the issue, supporting your ideas with examples from the text.

Ideas for issues: you might focus on a particular human problem (imperfect love, for instance) or a situation you think the author is exploring (how the past haunts the present, for instance); an idea arising from the way characters are presented, behave and interact; or consider the way the story is structured and formulate a position on your focus.  Alternatively, you might want to analyse the language and/or form of the work.  How do specific structures or use(s) of language create a deeper level of meaning/significance to help you better understand the richness of the text?  If you are writing on poetry, you may take up what you see as a theme or issue in the text but focus on one or two poems to support and illustrate your points.

As you figure out your position, read with questions and search for clues to support your position. Sample questions: how did the text lead me to think differently about the world, about being human or about writing as a creative process? Did it deepen, or confirm, views I now hold?  Or, did it challenge me to see things differently?  If so, how?  Is there a larger significance to all this? How did the author achieve this – through narrative, character interaction and/or structure and language?

A word of advice regarding form for this assignment:

Rather than using the form of a conventional academic essay, write a ‘personal’ letter to the author. Imagine the author reading your letter.

Components of your letter should include:

an introductory passage where you introduce the issue you’ve chosen (about one paragraph in length).  The paragraph should contain a thesis statement (your position) on the issue you take up;

a section, divided in coherent body paragraphs, where you present your analysis using examples (quotations) from the text.

a concluding passage where you sum up your ideas.

Basically, your letter should contain a thoughtful, interpretative, critical response to the book you choose.  Our grading sheet is available on the course website and shows how your letter will be evaluated.

Grading criteria: Your letter demonstrates 1. a focused analysis; 2. use of examples from the text to explain the significance of your points; 3. effective writing style.   See the grading sheet in the first section of the course website.

Education of English Language Learners and Students With Disabilities

Overview

Your current position is an educational consultant of English language learners (ELL) and students with disabilities in the New Brookhaven School. (You may determine the level of the school: early childhood, elementary, middle, or high school.) The teachers you are assigned to work with have taught in the school for 5–10 years. Each teacher is set in his or her ways. The test scores on achievement tests for neighborhood typical learning students are average to above average. Students with disabilities are known to be excluded from standardized testing and some classroom activities. Five ELL students have also just arrived at the school from the new community immigrant host program. Parents of the ELL students do not speak English and will need an interpreter to work with the school and communicate with teachers. Two of the ELL students are known for exhibiting behavioral outbursts in class. Several of the students with disabilities also have Behavioral Intervention Plans and are behind academically. Parents of the students with disabilities often complain that their children are not receiving a fair education and are treated differently than their peers. The school has limited technology funding. Your position in the school is to create a learning environment that is educationally sound for the ELL students and students with disabilities.

Instructions

Write an 8–10 page paper in which you:

  1. Summarize a background scenario of the school, teachers, teaching environment, and students.
  2. Explain how you would establish and integrate programs for students with disabilities and ELL students. Research and cite two case law findings that impact programs for students with disabilities and ELL students.
  3. Analyze how school resources and public school funding could be utilized or reappropriated for technology and specialized programs for student learning and engagement. Research and cite one case law finding or legislative act that impacts school resources and public school funding allocations.
  4. Discuss how incidents of behavioral infractions will be addressed.
  5. Recommend how the needs of students and teachers will be met as it relates to student and teacher freedom and safety.
  6. Construct a plan to meet the needs of ELL students, students with disabilities, and their parents.
  7. Explain a strategy for securing technology funding to meet student and teacher technology needs.
  8. Analyze three potential challenges to your proposed plan and explain how you would address these.
  9. Use at least six peer-reviewed academic resources in this assignment including a conversation from a K-12 Administrator. Note: Wikipedia and similar websites do not qualify as academic resources. If you are uncertain that a resource qualifies as a peer-reviewed academic resource, please consult your course instructor. The K-12 Administrator qualifies as one academic resource.

English watching US movies, tv shows, listening to US musicians and going on English websites

Business is done in all different languages, but the most common of them is English.  It is certainly not because English is easy to learn, compared to many other languages, English has some very difficult and sometimes nonsensical syntax and sounds.  Despite this, English dominates international business speaking for a number of reasons: the prevalence and international presence of US firms, the abundance of US Universities who have international exchange programs, and even our entertainment.  Many international students have noted that they learned a great deal of English watching US movies, tv shows, listening to US musicians and going on English websites.  Do you think that English will continue to be the language of business?  Could it possibly become a global language where nearly everyone will or could speak it?  Finally, do you agree with the assertion that US students and business people have a distinct (and perhaps unfair) advantage over others when applying to international firms simply because they speak better English?  Why/why not?

Minimum 275 words.

Introduction

Learning English as second language of acquisition has attracted active research for many years in different parts of the world. Linguistics have in the past decades focused on comprehension understanding of vocabulary as the basic of language acquisition. Nonetheless, language as a social phenomenon is a compositions of words and lexical (multi-word) items comprising of collocations and idioms as two major categories. Linguists have held the view that idiomatic expression in second language has been challenging to many learners because it is difficult for the learners to understand the meaning of each word in a phrase as well as comprehending the overall meaning of a phrase. Studies have shown that learners who have prior exposure to idioms have little challenge to comprehend idioms. As a result, educationists recognized the needs to incorporate idioms learning with language curriculum.

Although some people believes that idioms learning occurs generally with language development. This is a contentious debate that linguists have engaged in for many years and many studies have tried to determine the truth. Idioms, collocations and saying are the integral components of language. They are collectively described as formulaic sequences, prefabricated units and multi-word units. However, formulaic language have received much attention because of it is considered as important component of English language use thus applied widespread in English. Formulaic sequence is known to enhance fluency of English as a second language.

In formulaic language, idioms have attracted more research because it function as a single unit despite the fact that it composed of multiple words. The characterization of idioms has been problematic because it lacks a universal agreed definition. Their ambiguity makes it difficult for the scholar to come up with a general agreed definition…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..Importance of learning English idioms…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

English Common Law

Please make sure this answer is ORIGINAL with at least 350 words

The living will is a relatively new doctrine and instrument in the English Common Law. The living will is a creation of necessity that came about due to the huge and unforeseeable medical advances that occurred in the 20th century due primarily to technological breakthroughs. Prior to this time, the common law allowed an individual to make her medical decisions only during such time as she was physically competent to do so. If and when such competency ended, the law imposed a strict protocol of persons to whom the duty of decision-making would fall. No allowances were made for what we now call advance directives. Is this an improvement of the law or do living wills and advance directives create more problem than they solve? Please use a concrete example to support your argument.

English people versus American people

submit a 1000 words paper on the topic English people versus American people. The United States is made up of many sub cultures and values within sub cultures vary from region to region which is not true in the case of Britain. The British hold a more conservative approach to their lifestyles and a common set of values prevails over the entire country making it and its people less receptive to outsiders and alien ideas. Furthermore, the British also have a more conservative immigration policy for outsiders to come to the country either to visit or settle with the natives of the land. On the contrary, America has shown more flexibility to its naturalization process and immigration is actually supported by the system- making it a land of opportunity for all. Moreover, people in Britain are linked with their heritage and location as where they are from and where their ancestors have been linked to. This creates a strong internal discrimination among themselves and has developed a class system within the country. Anywere starting from linkage to the royalty to the lords of the land, people feel pride in their heritage to an extent where hey actually discriminate their values over others living within the country and not belonging to the same level or maybe higher to their lineage (Denning, 1996).

Equality among people in Britain has suffered where no two classes are treated equally between the circles and this difference is clearly visible when comparing the labour over different industries. A coal miner does not get the same respect as a restaurant waiter. A manager in a big corporation feels and shows his elevated grace to a manager in a small firm. In the contrast, the American system of the society, though may at times be unjust, but is more liberal in the concept of equality (Christopher, 1999). Human Rights are made into laws and discrimination is discouraged by implementing legislations that enact to support equality and discourage gender or race discrimination.
