GMGT 4010 – Administrative Policy

Take-home Midterm Case Instructions

Papers are due BY 11:59 p.m. ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 2021 AT um learn website of the course. You should plan to upload the paper by 11:30 p.m. to avoid any chances of being late. Any papers that arrive late will receive a late penalty as described in these instructions and the course outline. The late policy will be strictly enforced to keep the level playing field for all students.

The Assignment

Mobileye CEO Amnon Shashua and his team, aware of your skills in strategic analysis, have asked you to help them assess the situation and to recommend a strategy for the company for the next five years. Please prepare a report for them giving your appraisal of the situation and your recommendations, considering strategy formulation as well as implementation issues, and using the format given in the “General Guidelines for Analyzing and Writing Cases” provided at the UM Learn website of the course. Please do not limit yourself to the alternatives, if any, given in the case so you may build other strategic alternatives and consider them before making a recommendation. The case is available for purchase at the Ivey Publishing’s website. Its title is “Mobileye 2021: Robotaxi and/or Consumer AV” and its number is 721481. Its date is June 2, 2021. The case is from the Harvard Business School. Be sure to buy the case mentioned above because there are other cases on Mobileye. In fact, I have added this case to the Administrative Policy coursepack as well (see at the bottom of the coursepack). Please feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Midterm Examination Case Specifications

The paper must be between 2,000–2,800 words and printed on a maximum of nine (9) pages in double-space with 12-point Times New Roman font and one-inch (2.54 centimeters) margins on all sides (maximum 23 lines per page). You must use paragraphs and headings in keeping with appropriate business writing form. Use a tab at the beginning of the paragraph to clearly distinguish it from previous paragraphs. Do not use any footnotes. You may use either left justification or both left and right justification.

The word-count limit and the nine-page limit do not include the Title Page or any exhibits. However, they do include the executive summary. Therefore, ignore the Title Page and begin page number one with the Executive Summary. Please do not use fancy fonts. Avoid extended use of bold or italics also. Papers that grossly violate these guidelines will receive a failing grade (e.g., using a font smaller than the one specified here or using single space text in the body of the paper will receive a failing grade). Points may be deducted for other violations (e.g., at least ten per cent points will be deducted for each additional page or part thereof {Hint: “part thereof” here means at least ten per cent points will be deducted for any part of the tenth or any subsequent page}). Ten per cent deduction means that if you receive 80 per cent marks in the exam, violation of one page (or part thereof) will reduce it to 70 per cent. Please be sure that the text of the paper as well as the exhibits are readable. It may be better to copy and paste exhibits from Excel to Word rather than use their pictures or screenshots. As you know, pictures or screenshots make the numbers difficult to read.

Clarification: Stop when you reach 2,800 words or nine pages in the given format. In other words, the paper must meet both conditions: Not more than 2,800 words and not more than nine pages in the given format. Include the Word Count and the Page Count on the statement of integrity and the title page (as shown above). Keep in mind that the word count and the page count include the headings and subheadings that are part of the text of the paper. You may underline or use bold letters for the headings of various sections to show them clearly.

Submitting the Case – Uploading at UM Learn

Papers must be submitted in a pdf format by the deadline at UM Learn in the Midterm Exam folder of the course. The pdf copy must have all pages of the text as well as the exhibits. The papers should have a Title Page as given in these instructions. Papers with any student’s name or without the word count will not be accepted (No student names anywhere on the exam!). Each page of the report should contain a header or footer with the student number, section number, and page number. Make sure you put the signed Statement of Integrity (SOI) in a different file and name it so it is easily identifiable.

Students are also required to submit exact electronic copies of the paper in the Word format at UM Learn. Please do not email the electronic copies to your instructor. When you submit a file at UM Learn, you will get a receipt. Also, AACSB Assurance of Learning Committee will need to access them at UM Learn for their use. Please submit one document in the Microsoft Word format, which should have all the text as well as the exhibits. Please name the files as follows: GMGT4010-Midterm-Section Number-Student Number. Please do not submit more than these three documents (a pdf file, a Word file, and the Statement of Integrity (SOI) file). As you know, the pdf document ensures that the formatting stays the same, irrespective of the computer settings.

As mentioned in the course outline, please note the following for late penalty (on weekdays as well as weekends): Late submissions, including those delayed by computer-related difficulties, will be penalized ten percentage points for every 24 hour period, or portion thereof late. For example, a student who earns a score of 80% on his/her paper will receive a score of 70% if the paper was submitted one day late. Exam papers will not be accepted after 48 hours. Exceptional circumstances which might jeopardize your ability to meet this deadline must be brought to your instructor’s attention prior to the due date, or else they cannot be considered as grounds for exemption from this late penalty. If you are involved in any co-curricular activities (e.g., case competitions at another university), you are expected to complete and submit the paper prior to the deadline.

Saving Copies of the Paper

Neither the department nor the university accepts any responsibility for potential loss of papers during handling. Such a loss may be extremely rare; nevertheless, to protect against this theoretical possibility, all students are required to keep a hard and an electronic copy of the paper that they submit. Don’t forget to save multiple soft copies to avoid any chance of losing your disk, computer crash, or other such problems!

External Research

You are required to access the company’s annual financial information (Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flows, and Stock Prices) from the Internet for at least three years (2018-2020). As you may know, this information is easily available at several websites, e.g., Yahoo Finance, Google Finance, Marketwatch, Macrotrends, Wall Street Journal, etc. Some of these websites may also have key financial ratios of various companies available for several years. Usually, trends of these ratios for the most recent five years is sufficient. You may use the ratios from these websites in your report but be sure to provide the reference. As you know, it is more important to know how to interpret these ratios than how to calculate them.

This assignment is primarily based on the case and the financial information. Thus, you are not required to conduct any other external research on the company and its industries. You may search for other information up to June 2, 2021, if you would like to (the company’s fiscal year is from January to December). Even if you are searching for information from external sources, it should not be the focus of the paper. Moreover, search for or use of any information or data regarding this company and its industries after the above-mentioned date will be subject to hind-sight bias and will be considered a violation of university policy on Academic Integrity.

Be sure to provide references on a separate page for any search before the date given above and attach this page at the end of the paper. This page may contain only references and can be in addition to the text-pages and exhibits. The words on the reference page are not included in the word count of the paper. You may use APA or any other format. Please use your own words throughout the paper and do not use any direct quotations from the case or from the external sources. You may provide the citations (e.g., when you are providing Assumptions and their Justification exhibit) by the name of the author and year (e.g., Smith, 2020). If the source material does not have an author, you may use the name of publication (e.g., Wall Street Journal, 2020).

Please keep in mind that you are not allowed to consult any case solutions or teaching notes for the midterm case or any other case that may be related to the midterm case in any way

After implementing your capstone, you will have an opportunity to conduct a post-assessment and evaluate the success of the project

Question: After implementing your capstone, you will have an opportunity to conduct a post-assessment and evaluate the success of the project. Before getting the results, what do you expect to learn from the post-assessment? Do you feel your capstone project was successful? What could you have done differently or improved upon?

Answer: The post-assessment will help in analyzing the state of the capstone project and how have the strategies involved have fared for the remote work program This helps in analyzing any pitfalls that are needed to be checked to ensure optimized capstone simulation. To be able to understand the metrics which are dominant in determining the results in post-assessment will be a big boost for understanding the capstone project.

This capstone project has been successful if the implied strategies are accurately executed and the results are favourable for the organization. There could have been more detailed scenarios to help in making decisions impacting the business environment. The explanation of all the necessary fields or a training module to understand the interface would be essential and helpful. Thus these improvements can be considered in the capstone project.

Critically evaluate and apply theoretical models and methods of the biological bases of behaviour to propose solutions to current global health challenges

Assessment task 3 – Case study analysis
Assignment Content
Overview
Type: Case study analysis (Individual task)
Weighting: 50%
Length: 1500 words (excluding reference list)
Material: Covered in weeks 2 to 4
Aligned subject learning outcomes:
SLO2. Critically evaluate and apply theoretical models and methods of the biological bases of behaviour to propose solutions to current global health challenges;
SLO3. Communicate proposed solutions to current global health challenges to a variety of audiences.
In this task you will be required to critically evaluate research from areas of the biological bases of behavior, and use the research to propose solutions to a global health issue that is directly aligned to a Sustainable Development Goal. Your response will take the form of a population-based case study analysis. The following steps apply:
Choose a population-based case study from the three categories provided below, and select one of the specific options. You must focus on one of the assignations below, otherwise a grade of zero will be awarded for this assessment.
Identify the challenge for the particular case study and population option, and formulate a research question to focus on, including the methodological approaches and research inclusions and exclusions for the literature review.
Conduct a literature review on your question to evaluate the current research in behavioural neuroscience.
Write up your case study in the following format.
a. The first section of your submission will provide an overview of the case study, and the overarching aim of your analysis of it. Write this first as you will use this synopsis to formulate a scope of your literature review. Be sure to include concise information to inform the reader about the population and the challenge (recommended word limit: 200).
b. Detail your research question because the research question will determine the review method, the literature sourced, and the focus. A research question in this context is the stated aim/focus of the review that you have set out to have answered by the review process. At this point, detail the inclusion/exclusion criteria for the literature (this is how you determine what literature to include in the review), and explain the reasoning behind these considerations. Use this as an opportunity to really define your review aim and method and its focus (recommended word limit: 200).
c. Present your evidence-based literature review, critically evaluating the research as it applies to your case study, your aim, and your research question; and provide discussion on behavioural neuroscience evidence-based solutions to the identified issue. Depending on topic and focus, your critical evaluation might involve, for example, weighing up the balance of the evidence in relation to what has been shown to work or not work) and then providing a clearly stated determination for the reader (recommended word limit: 900).
d. The final section of your submission will provide a succinct overview of your findings of the literature review, and your recommended behavioural neuroscience evidence-based solution(s) to the challenge as it applies to the target population (recommended word limit: 200).
Notes relevant to your submission:
• You must adhere to APA 7 formatting requirements, including in-text citations and referencing
• You must focus on one of the assignations below, otherwise a grade of zero will be awarded.

Digital Neuropsychology
The health challenge topics in this section align to the Sustainable Development Goal #3, to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
Digital neuropsychology provides new approaches for measuring and monitoring neuropsychological functioning (including computerized neuropsychological assessment devices). In this topic you will recommend the potential uses for digital neuropsychology (including computerised neuropsychological assessment devices) in the diagnosis, or treatment or rehabilitation of a neurological condition aligned to the currently recognised global health challenge of good health and well-being. Choose one of the following topics as your population case study:
Option 1 Diagnosis OR treatment of Adults with Multiple Sclerosis
Option 2 Diagnosis OR treatment of people with Acquired Brain Injury
Option 3 Cognitive rehabilitation of adults with drug addiction/addictive disorders.
Neurobiology of aggression
The health challenge topics in this section align with the Sustainable Development Goal #16 to significantly reduce all forms of violence and related death rates everywhere.
Studies related to the neurobiology of aggression provide us with a more sophisticated understanding of the mechanisms underpinning antisocial behaviour, moral decision making, and violent offending. Research has suggested potential links between brain structures, hormones, biological functioning in the body and aggressive behaviour. This topic is focused on the development of neurobiological evidence-based methodologies that can be employed in the diagnosis or treatment of antisocial behaviour. Your target groups are as follows:
Option 1 Diagnosis of Violent Offenders to assist with targeted treatment
Option 2 Treatment for the perpetrators of domestic violence to prevent re-offending.
Healthy and disordered eating: The obesity epidemic
The health challenge topic in this section aligns to the Sustainable Development Goal #3 to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages; and #12 to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
According to the World Health Organisation (2016), there were around 2 billion adults who were categorised as being overweight, 650 million of which were obese. It has been suggested that the worldwide prevalence of obesity tripled between 1975 and 2016. Calculations indicate, based on current trends, that there will likely be in the order of 2.7 billion overweight adults, in excess of 1 billion adults affected by obesity, and 177 million adults severely affected by obesity by 2025. Discuss and evaluate the reasons Socrates gives for not escaping jail even though he had ample opportunity to do so.

At least 250 words.

Please pick one of the following questions to answer for the forum this week:

  • Discuss and evaluate the reasons Socrates gives for not escaping jail even though he had ample opportunity to do so. What is the nature of the “social contract” here that Socrates is following?
  • How could it be said that the Social Contract Theory produces an orderly society without needing to legislate a particular version of “morality” and what counts as the “good life”? How does the Social Contract avoid problems associated with the Divine Command Theory of morality for a constitutional liberal democracy such as ours in the United States of America?
  • Discuss John Rawls’ idea of the “Veil of Ignorance” and evaluate how it is said to establish a fair distribution of wealth. What is the purpose of the “veil” and what is it supposed to accomplish

Canadians search for options and evaluate alternatives for filing their personal and business taxes.

H&R BLOCK CANADA

By April of every year, Canadians search for options and evaluate alternatives for filing their personal and business taxes. Whether they are students, professors, or business professionals, Canadians who seek help for tax preparation services have a number of different options. After careful evaluation of their alternatives, Canadians remain loyal to only a few of them. Tax preparers who have discovered the correct strategy for effective pricing have realized the lifetime value of their clients.

Not only does H&R Block have an effective pricing strategy, but it also effectively trains the future tax preparers of Canada. Each year, more than 10,000 students enroll in H&R Block’s Income Tax School. Graduates of the school may become H&R Block employees, but they also may work for major banks, mutual fund companies, and brokerage firms in Canada. The training offered includes a written guarantee that the training is the strongest in the industry. H&R Block’s guarantee to its clients is just one element of its customer relationship management strategy and its success. Furthermore, H&R Block values students as future clients. Its tax preparation services in Canada offer special student pricing offers. For example, from August 2013 through July 2014, H&R Block offered a promotion giving students Student Price Cards (SPC) valid for savings at over 100 retailers.

H&R Block opened its first franchised operation in Canada in 1964 and opened its first company-owned operation in Canada the following year. This was its first venture into multichannel offerings for its clients, but definitely not its last. As the organization grew in U.S. and Canada, it also expanded into 13 foreign companies and it services Canadians at home and abroad.

It may seem difficult for such a large organization to keep its service offering consistent among so many locations, but H&R Block finds a way to do it. Hilary explains, “H&R Block spends a great deal of time educating its employees on the value they offer clients. Through effective training on position pricing, H&R Block employees explain the value their services offer in the context of perceived benefits in relation to price.” The value of the organization’s services increases as the benefits clients receive increase.

Pricing strategy is an important element of H&R Block’s business. When determining if the prices for the services the organization offers are appropriate, H&R Block researches its competitors. This allows the company to decide if it should be offering prices at, above, or below market pricing. More importantly, H&R Block conducts research on its clients. As director of marketing, Hilary leads the market research efforts. She explains the rationale behind the key questions clients are asked. “We first want to understand if our clients know what price they are paying for the service. From there, we determine the price they are willing to pay for the service.” What Hilary has noticed is that clients are actually willing to pay more if they receive a level of service that exceeds their expectations. “We also ask if clients are willing to pay a certain price for a service to see if it is appropriately positioned for the market.”

In addition to its at- and below-market pricing strategies, H&R Block also uses odd-even pricing strategies. “You will notice that some of our prices are shown below the whole dollar amount. That is just the beginning of the conversation. As I mentioned before, clients are willing to pay more for our services when they see the value-added service we offer.”

H&R Block’s Second Look campaign helps put the organization’s pricing strategy to the test. By attracting potential clients for a second opinion, it can illustrate the value of its professional services.

Epilogue

To get a sense of H&R Block’s customer experience from a customer’s perspective, consider Tony, an H&R Block client. When Tony moved into his new home, he also made a decision to change accountants. “There were a lot of individuals at work that were speaking highly of H&R Block,” shares Tony. “It made sense to try them out.” Going through his consumer purchase decision, Tony identified that “I did not want the hassle of doing taxes on my own.” Encouraged by work colleagues, Tony decided to investigate H&R Block as an option. His decision to go with the company over private accounting firms was finalized when he walked into the company’s convenient neighborhood office location. “There was a sandwich board in the H&R Block office,” recounts Tony. “I knew right there what I was going to pay and I had the assurance that my taxes would be done accurately. I also received my money right there.”

Questions

1.     For H&R Block Canada what are examples of (a) shifting the demand curve to the right to get a higher price for tax filing (movement of the demand curve) and (b) pricing decisions involving moving along a demand curve?

2.     Assume an H&R Block Canada location had a fixed cost of $12,000 to cover during tax filing season, and variable costs for each service of $29. What would the break-even point be for professional services of (a) 109, (b) $69, and (c) $39? Also, (d) if H&R Block Canada achieves the sales target of 2,000 units at the $129 retail price, what will its profit be?

3.     Assume that H&R Block Canada opened an office to a remote part of Canada where fixed costs were cut in half to $6,000 and variable costs for each service were dropped to $19, what would be what will be the (a) new break-even point at a $129 retail price for this line of services and (b) the new profit if it produces 2,000 returns?
