Introduction
In one of the greatest debates that shaped the American constitution, a debate that centered on the distribution of power between the federal government and state governments ensued (Pfiffner). In addition, the debate extended on the strength and the composition of the executive. In his presentation, Hamilton made a very important statement that asserted that there was need to put in place an energetic executive arm of the federal government. According to Alexander Hamilton, the legislature was a weak branch of the government and that there was need to put in place a strong executive so that it could check the passions of the population that was represented by the legislature. Therefore, he advocated for creation of an energetic executive with unity, competent powers, support and duration.
The Importance of the Statement to the Understanding of the Founding Conception of the Presidency
In his presentation, Hamilton reiterated that an energetic executive had to have certain ingredients, which he outline as unity, duration, competent powers as well as adequate provision of support (Hamilton 1). Furthermore, he asserted that the popular statesmen and politicians who had been celebrated for the soundness of their principles had shown their support for a single executive and numerous legislature. When he points to the views of the popular politicians and statesmen, Hamilton wanted to justify his position as to why he favored a powerful and single executive. His choice of the popular American politicians was well crafted in order to show why it was necessary to create a strong executive and many legislatures in the federal government.
