Slides 3-4Describe the symptoms of the disorder. What happens in the body to cause the disease? Is it a mutation? How is it inherited? Is it recessive or dominant or sex-linked? Is it triggered by other events? Find 1-2 images to illustrate the symptoms or cause of the disorder.

Slides 5-6How is the disorder diagnosed? What tests are done? Is genetic counseling an option?

Slide 7How is the disorder treated? Discuss medications, gene therapy, etc. Include an image to support your research.

Slide 8- Application of researchSummarize new findings about your chosen disorder by researching current articles. What new information did you learn about your chosen disorder? Include the resource(s).

Slide 9 – ConclusionSummarize your project findings.

Slide 10—ReferencesPlease provide your sources in APA format.

SLP Assignment Expectations

For this SLP assignment you will develop a PowerPoint Presentation that is approximately 1-10 slides in length and addresses the requirements outlined above. Place the text containing the answers to the questions above in the slide area, summarizing each topic using bullet points (in your own words, you can expand in more detail using the notes area). Use 4-5 bullet points per slide. Avoid using lengthy sentences and paragraphs. Maintain consistent font sizes throughout the presentation.

Practicum Discussion: Culturally aware nurses recognize that states of health are revealed differently across cultures and ethnicities. Culture and ethnic background will affect the way each individual responds to health, illness, and death (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2020). These nurses are also aware of their own biases, which may affect the care they provide to others (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2020). Because most nurses work in institutions with individual patients, they are accustomed to delivering culturally competent care on a one-on-one basis. When a public health nurse deals with a population, he or she must consider how the population culture affects the ways in which the community nurse may interact. This can be with regard to the provision of education or mass health care needs such as those required in a foodborne illness, if mass vaccinations are needed for a communicable disease outbreak, or if education is required to prevent heart disease. In addition to understanding the nuances of the culture of a population, community health nurses must understand the role genetics play in health. Some disorders, such as glaucoma and diabetes, have a genetic link, as do some cancers, such as breast and ovarian.

  • Provide a few examples of community resources that should be put in place to assist your population in resolving their health care needs. What gaps in service do you see that affect your population?
  • Are there any cultural considerations that might inform your approach to caring for this population?
  • Does your population have a genetic predisposition to the health care problem you have identified?
  • Identify at least one evidence-based, culturally competent behavior change that would promote health for your selected population and for the specific health care problem you are addressing?

           Human physical, emotional, intellectual, and psychological development is influenced by many factors. Some of the most important factors that have been shown to have a significant influence on intellectual development are genetic and environmental factors. Although identical twins have similarities in genetic makeup, differences in environmental experiences have been shown to lead to differences in their intellectual development. 

           Research has shown that an individual intelligence, personality, and temperament are a product of complex interaction of both environmental and genetic factors. Bukatko and Daehler (2012) point out that twins who are born in the same environment share similar genetic makeup, nature, and nurture. However, when such twins are separated and placed in a different environment, their intellectual development is then influenced by the difference in nature and nurture. Such an influence is termed as a nonshared environmental influence (NSE) (Shaffer, 2009). Nonshared environmental influences will have an impact on the intellectual capacity of the two twins. Studies done on the impact of nonshared environmental influence among twins have shown differences in intelligence quotient (IQ) among identical twins. Shaffer (2009) points out that in studies that were done among two twins placed in two different homes indicates that one of the twins had differences in IQ with a correlation of .86.
