40 Kurdish learner’s of English at Koya university, were grouped into two groups. 20 student’s in each group. the student’s were give a pre-questionnaire asking them them about the importance of learning English idioms. after that they were being taught English idioms for 3 weeks. group A were exposed to idioms in context while group B were exposed to English idiom with reference to Kurdish equivalents. after the 3 week course again they were given the same questionnaire, in order to know whether or not changed their opinion about the importance of learning idioms, and likert scale had been used to analyse the questions . concerning the structure of this chapter i want it to be as follows: 1-Introduction( including research questions) 2- relevant literature 3-results( i have the figures will attach it ) 4- discussion Note: i do not need the methodology because i will write it in a another chapter #TopicTermAcademic LevelQuantityTotal1student’s opinion on the process of learning idioms10 daysPh. Introduction
Learning English as second language of acquisition has attracted active research for many years in different parts of the world. Linguistics have in the past decades focused on comprehension understanding of vocabulary as the basic of language acquisition. Nonetheless, language as a social phenomenon is a compositions of words and lexical (multi-word) items comprising of collocations and idioms as two major categories. Linguists have held the view that idiomatic expression in second language has been challenging to many learners because it is difficult for the learners to understand the meaning of each word in a phrase as well as comprehending the overall meaning of a phrase. Studies have shown that learners who have prior exposure to idioms have little challenge to comprehend idioms. As a result, educationists recognized the needs to incorporate idioms learning with language curriculum.
Although some people believes that idioms learning occurs generally with language development. This is a contentious debate that linguists have engaged in for many years and many studies have tried to determine the truth. Idioms, collocations and saying are the integral components of language. They are collectively described as formulaic sequences, prefabricated units and multi-word units. However, formulaic language have received much attention because of it is considered as important component of English language use thus applied widespread in English. Formulaic sequence is known to enhance fluency of English as a second language.
