3. Unlike the previous two-unit essays, there is no required outline or pattern that you have to use for organizing this essay. However, you will want to plan your organization so your ideas connect and make sense to the reader. You may use either of the patterns from the previous two units. Also, you may look at the different patterns presented in Chapter 10 for ideas. As a bit of advice, the structure is shown in Chapter 10.9 under the heading “Structure of a Persuasive Essay” is a helpful model to look at.

4. Since this essay is more persuasive instead of argumentative, you do not have to do any formal research, but you should have explanations and support for any positions you offer.

5. The essay will be at least two full pages long but no more than four pages (unless you have your instructor’s permission to go over 4 pages). You will use the MLA formatting guidelines that you used in the previous essays.

6. Include a title for your essay.

7. After writing the essay, be sure to take the time to read it several times for revision and editing. It would be helpful to have at least one other person proofread it as well before submitting the assignment

Human physical, emotional, intellectual, and psychological development is influenced by many factors. Some of the most important factors that have been shown to have a significant influence on intellectual development are genetic and environmental factors. Although identical twins have similarities in genetic makeup, differences in environmental experiences have been shown to lead to differences in their intellectual development.

Research has shown that an individual intelligence, personality, and temperament are a product of complex interaction of both environmental and genetic factors. Bukatko and Daehler (2012) point out that twins who are born in the same environment share similar genetic makeup, nature, and nurture. However, when such twins are separated and placed in a different environment, their intellectual development is then influenced by the difference in nature and nurture. Such an influence is termed as a nonshared environmental influence (NSE) (Shaffer, 2009). Nonshared environmental influences will have an impact on the intellectual capacity of the two twins. Studies done on the impact of nonshared environmental influence among twins have shown differences in intelligence quotient (IQ) among identical twins. Pat’s boss: Pat is somewhat of a laidback worker. She does not seem to take her work seriously. She is late getting to work sometimes, and she takes long breaks to smoke and to be alone.

Pat’s best friend: Pat has had a rough life. She suffers from a lot of emotional stuff. She is a good person, though. She just has it tough. I have had a rough life, so I know a little of what she’s going through.

Pat’s medical doctor: Pat has always done better in groups. When she was in the hospital, she seemed to be able to complete tasks better, and she seemed to be able to make better decisions for herself. I think this was, in part, because she had other people around her who could encourage her.

Pat’s mom: I wish she would stop smoking. She used to tell me she wanted to stop smoking. She must have tried a million times. She just never could do it. Application: Understanding Pat Using Social Psychology Research

Through social media and technology, people are more connected now than any other time is history. Human connections are powerful and results of these interactions can range from the heroes on Flight 93 to terrible atrocities like the Holocaust or Rwanda. Understanding cultural and social influence builds a foundation for understanding what makes people do what they do or do not do.

There are several theories that support social psychology. For example, attribution theory suggests that you tend to attribute the behavior of others to either disposition or external situation (Heider, 1958). Just as circumstances and disposition impact behavior, attitudes are also predictors of behaviors. Peripheral route persuasion argues that attitude changes are influenced by things, such as attractiveness or celebrity. Alternatively, central route persuasion argues that attitudes change based on scientific evidence and arguments. Central route persuasion is much more thoughtful and more likely to influence behavior. Additionally, external influences and personal attitudes influence your behavior.

For this assignment, you will choose one social psychology theory and apply it to Pat’s behavior.
