Jacob Lawrence is a renowned African-American and most honoured painter. The painter is recognised and known for his artistic work and his arts are exhibit in major museums across America. His also know for teaching art across different art schools in America as well as commissioned books that present his work. His work is not only exhibited in museums and books but also in magazine illustrations, drawings, paintings, murals and posters. Among his famous works are 1976 print that he made of United States Bicentennial, a 1984 poster illustrating the National Urban League and a 193 special edition of John Hersey’s book, Hiroshima(Hughes 24). Jacob Lawrence work is described as a standard bearer for future generations of artisists, typical in style and color and an abstract treatment portraying realistic subject matter.

One of the most famous paintings by Jacob Lawrence is known as ‘One Way Ticket.’

Jacob Lawrence made this painting in 1941 illustrating the mass movement of Black people from the rural South of American to the Urban North by then. His painting represented the great migration of African-American people from the South to the North around the year 1915 (Beardenand Henderson 295). During this time, America faced a lot of hardships from discrimination, racial bias, post-war difficulties, lack of jobs, and political unrest and mostly affected the Blacks in the South. This group opted to move to the North since there were more opportunities there and more stable living conditions than in the South.

Jacob clearly presents his art with precisions and admirable clarity. Colour, style, design, arrangement and timely of the art defines an art (Graves 52). The arrangement in the art is systematic, and it provides a balance by clearly distributing the art, colours and providing enough space for the elements in the picture.             The late 1940’s was characterized by the abstractionism and the realism artistic styles. Born in the same era, Lawrence instead would reject these artistic styles in favor of his own styles, where he made alive paintings of human figures, mostly African-Americans, whom he depicted in different activities. In his paintings, Lawrence’s artwork were full of dignity and grace and employed different sources,  colors and design, with repetitive patterns to tell different stories and messages of human triumph. Lawrence made several artworks, which includes The Migration of the Negro, The Harriet Tubman Series, They were very poor, Pool Parlor, The Builders and Dreams, among other paintings.

            The Migration of the Negro has been hailed as one of the most famous paintings of Jacob Lawrence.
