Choose a service project at an accessible location where you have an interest and passion for making a difference

GEOGRAPHY PROJECT PLAN INSTRUCTIONS OVERVIEW The Geography Project Plan is a research paper and a capstone assignment whereby you will apply geographic and research skills toward solving a real problem.INSTRUCTIONS . The project must be feasible in scale and scope for a student’s time and budget. Choose a specific location rather than a grand scale project like ending world hunger. Your plan must be 1,000–1,250 words, use Times New Roman 12-point font with 1-inch margins, include a cover page, the required sections (shown below), a reference page, a map, and a realistic budget. Cite at least five scholarly sources (other than Scripture, the textbook, and Wikipedia) in current APA format. The project can have an environmental focus, e.g., access to clean drinking water; preserving natural habitats; reducing air and water pollution; or dealing with the aftermath of natural disasters like floods, tsunamis, and earthquakes. Many students choose humanitarian projects focused on health, education, and financial needs, e.g., educating illiterate populations; helping start businesses; feeding the malnourished; or resourcing underserved schools, health clinics, hospitals, or orphanages. Your project may be as simple as building a wheelchair ramp for your neighbor or building a new playground at your church. The project may expand upon an existing service, but you must identify what services currently exist and how the services may be expanded based on your contribution. You must include realisitic materials, transportation, labor, and other associated costs. For example, is there a need for additional homeless shelters? If shelters exist, where are they located and what populations do they serve? Is there a need for shelters to safely house families, or just women and children? How much would it cost to erect and operate a homeless shelter for the number of clients that you are proposing? Step 1: State the objective (what will be accomplished) and location of the project, e.g., “I will provide clean drinking water to the rural population in Nimba, Liberia by digging three wells.” Then give a brief explanation based on your initial research for why this project is needed. Step 2: Research, analyze, and describe the problem through a geographic lens. Consider the terms and concepts in the textbook and the five main themes of geography. Step 3: Describe a feasible course of action to solve the problem. The paper must explain the who, what, why, and where of this project. In the end, this paper is about the proposed solution, or Project Plan. Step 4: List and describe the detailed costs of the project (i.e. materials, transportation, labor, etc.) Step 5: Utilize and bold highlight at least five geographic terms from the text. Step 6: Incorporate the five main themes of geography into their required section headings.Use the following 10 required main sections when writing your paper. You may include subheadings as needed.GEOG 200Page 2 of 3I. IntroductionII. General Overview and RationaleIII. Region RelevanceIV. Location RelevanceV. Place RelevanceVI. Movement RelevanceVII. Human-Environmental Interaction RelevanceVIII BudgetIX. SummaryX. ReferencesHINT: The CIA World Factbook is a helpful place to begin when studying another country.Start by describing and analyzing the significance of location. Is the problem unique to a specific location or region? Why or why not? Describing the location of a low income rural town relative to regions of industry or agriculture can be revealing. Is the location a conurbation, technopole, forward capital, or primate city?Follow with a regional analysis that might include physiography (climate, terrain, bodies of water, flora and fauna), culture, population data (demographics), the economy, political geography, urban development, industrialization, and agriculture. How would you characterize the people, i.e., their culture, lifestyle and beliefs? How do language, gender, religion, and cultural traditions and values affect the project? Are the people part of a shatterbelt? Think about the sectors of the economy and development. Is the area you are addressing a periphery, semi-periphery, or core state, and how does that help or hinder the solution to the problem? Are the people subsistence farmers? Describe the population. Analyze the population distribution and density. Is it a floating population? Look at demographics like the birth rate, infant mortality rate, overall longevity, ratio of physicians to population, per capita income, average years of education or illiteracy, and the dependency ratio. What do those statistics indicate regarding the problem to be solved?Movement, or connectivity, is often a key component in any geographic analysis. Will you move people, goods, or information? How will you do that? What are the challenges of movement? Can you hand out brochures or a Bible if the people receiving them are illiterate? Do they have access to the internet? Is there adequate transportation infrastructure to move people and goods? Are roads improved or unimproved? Is there access to public transportation? Analyze physiography as it relates to movement. Think about transferability of goods, distance decay, or the movement of people through immigration or emigration.Study the cultural landscape and develop a sense of place. This can add insight to the culture and the economy. Can the type of places of worship indicate cultural or ethnic diversity in a location? Where is the nearest hospital or college? Do most people live in single-family homes, or do most residents rent? Can the number of traffic lights in a town indicate size?Consider the cause and effect of human interaction with the natural environment as it relates to your project. It may be as simple as studying the general climate and the seasonal effect on GEOG 200Page 3 of 3activities and services. Do the people contend with devastating drought, earthquakes, tsunamis, or hurricanes? Have people permanently altered the natural landscape through deforestation or the construction of dams, levees, or canals?Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.GEOG 200Page 3 of 3activities and services. Is your location a well-developed tourism destination with solid organization and continued growth

Part A: Research & Outline

Prepare for your report by conducting your research and outlining your report. You will need to include the following:

Annotated bibliography

Create an annotated bibliography consisting of at least 8-10 sources that you will use in conducting your research for this report (at least 2 must be peer-reviewed journal articles).

The annotated bibliography consists of your reference plus a paragraph (at least 3 sentences) below which describes how you will use this particular source. It should also provide a critique of the source (i.e. is your information reliable?).

Cover page and table of contents

Create a cover page and table of contents which will outline how you will address the questions listed below for the report.

Introduction

Write the introduction for your report and address the following:

  1. A brief history of tourism in your chosen location. For example, is your location a well-developed tourism destination with solid organization and continued growth, or is tourism a relatively new undertaking with little organization?
  2. The present demand for tourism based on a review of available tourism statistics (present this data in a table or in a visually appealing point format – be creative!). Include information such as:
    • Number of tourists and the revenue they generate
    • Origin of the tourists (i.e. where do they come from?).
    • Purpose of their trip.
    • A description of the key months/key seasons for visitation. When do most arrive? Are there opportunities to increase visitation at other times?
    • Information about the evolution of visitation over the past 10 – 20 years (e.g. increasing, decreasing, stagnant)

Part B: Situation Analysis & Future Plans

Using the outline, research, and introduction you prepared for Part A, prepare a report for your minister that examines the following. You can use the headings provided below as an organization guideline for formatting your paper.

Introduction and Overview of Tourism

Include content from Part A.

The Impact of Tourism

  • The benefits that tourism brings to your location.
  • The barriers to tourism acceptance at your location.
  • The impact of tourism on your location’s culture.

Tourism Management

  • Provide a brief description of how tourism is currently managed in your location. For example, are there government departments overseeing tourism in your location? If so, how is this structured? Are there strong LOCAL tourism organizations involved in tourism?
  • An overview of the training (or lack of) available to tourism employees.
  • Provide a brief summary of the components of a tourist destination area (TDA) at your location. Examine the adequacy of present supply (the five components noted below) with present demand (level of visitation). In other words, are the following five components of the TDA sufficient for tourism there? For each component comment on what is working and what you think could be improved. Provide evidence or examples to support your statements.
    1. Natural resources
    2. Infrastructure
    3. Suprastructure
    4. Transportation system
    5. Hospitality of the host

Note: If you have selected a location that you have personal experience with, your own experiences are a great starting point for research, but this report should be based on research and evidence. For example, don’t just say that the transportation systems seemed sufficient from when you were there. Do some research and reference your sources to support your statements.

Where you believe your location fits on the life cycle of a destination; justify or explain why you chose a particular stage in the life cycle.

Tourism Planning and Marketing

  • An analysis of the tourism planning process (i.e. has your location gone through a tourism planning process)? If so, what steps were followed? What key dimensions were incorporated in planning (i.e. environmental, social, and economic)? If no planning has taken place, discuss how this has impacted this tourism destination.
  • Using the basic 4 Ps of marketing (product, price, place, promotion), in general terms identify how your location is marketing itself today. Identify what could be changed and what could be improved for future marketing efforts.
  • Based on a review of tourism trends (global and local) identify future tourism plans for your location as well as challenges that lie ahead. Identify these future tourism plans using the eight components of tourism as your framework (transportation, accommodations, food and beverage, attractions, events, adventure tourism and outdoor recreation, travel services, and tourism services). Use the next 3 to 5 years as your planning horizon. *Hint: Use the tourism planning process described in this course and your text as your example.

Conclusion

Summarize your main points and provide a conclusion for the minister regarding your recommendations.

Format for Case Study

  • All assignments must be typed in Times New Roman font, 12-point size, double spaced.
  • Submit assignments in .doc or .docx or .pdf format.
  • All assignments must be professionally organized and presented. Instant messaging (IM), chat and email slang and abbreviations are not acceptable forms of communication in this course.
  • The final paper should not exceed 12 typed double spaced pages (excluding your title page, table of contents page, references page and appendices). Focus on being concise.
  • Visuals such as maps, infographics or tables are encouraged. Visuals are not included in the total page number count, as they are not text.
  • For in-text citations, references page, and title page, your papers must adhere to the guidelines set out in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA, 7th edition). There are many online resources that you can access to perfect this format.
  • Submit your assignments using dropbox on or before the deadline shared through the course announcements.

Why is the sequence of pain (location and type of pain) significant in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis? Describe the rational for each type of pain.

Ms. F, 48 years old, has been admitted to the hospital with severe abdominal pain. Earlier that day she had generalized abdominal pain, followed by a severe pain in the lower right quadrant of her abdomen, accompanied by nausea and vomiting. That evening she was feeling slightly improved and the pain seemed to subside somewhat. Later that night, severe, steady abdominal pain developed, with vomiting. A friend took her to the hospital, where examination demonstrated lower right quadrant tenderness and mild abdominal rigidity. Fever and leukocytosis indicated infection. A diagnosis of acute appendicitis, with possible perforation, was indicated, with immediate surgery.

Discussion Questions

  1. Why is the sequence of pain (location and type of pain) significant in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis? Describe the rational for each type of pain. Does this sequence confirm the diagnosis?
  2. Using the pathophysiology, describe the reason for:
    1. the pain subsiding and then recurring.
    2. leukocytosis and fever.
    3. abdominal rigidity.

Ms. T, age 28 years, has noticed urgency, frequency, and dysuria recently, as well as an unusual odor to the urine. Urinalysis indicated a heavy concentration of Escherichia coli in the urine, some pus, and WBCs. Ms. T was prescribed antibiotics, which she took for the first few days. This seemed to give her relief, but she then stopped taking the medication. Within a few days, the symptoms returned, but she decided to “just live with it.”

Discussion Questions

  1. Explain why women are predisposed to cystitis.
  2. What preventive measures are important in reducing recurrence?
  3. Discuss other signs and symptoms that may indicate cystitis.
  4. What potential problems may she experience if she does not adhere to the treatment prescribed?

Racist Facebook Post

This paper discusses a racial post made on social media by a major university partner against African-American women students at the university.

Overview

On September 19, 2018, Ed Meek posted a racially insensitive post on his Facebook page about Mississippi. 77-year-old Mr. Meek is a media entrepreneur, real estate investor and alumni of University of Mississippi. He donated over $5 million to the university, and the Meek School of Journalism and New Media is named after him.

In the post, Mr. Meek decried the deteriorating property prices around the campus and decreasing enrolment at the campus. He also attached a photo of two young African-American university students in party dresses.

The post was followed by an outcry from the university community, many town residents and the media. Did the media guru, who has a doctorate in mass communication and media studies, suggest that African-American women were the problem in the town? Or was it women? Was it African-Americans? Was Mr. Meek’s post a racial incitement?

Mr. Meek deleted the post after a few hours and issued a public apology, which he also deleted. He then posted an apology visible only to his friends.

Inter-institutional interactions

Being a media entrepreneur who owns New Media Lab LLC and real estate mogul in Nashville, Ed Meek is an opinion leader who gives talks on tax foreclosure properties. His background and experience give him some intensive and extensive knowledge about taxation and property values. However, for him to apportion the woes of industries he has invested in to the women gender of a traditionally marginalized race is short-sighted stereotyping. It can be viewed as incitement in the light of the following statement from the post, “A 3 percent decline in enrollment is nothing compared to what we will see if this continues…and real estate values will plummet as will tax revenue. We all share in the responsibility to protect the values we hold dear that have made Oxford and Ole Miss known nationally”.

Hassan (2018) notes that the University of Mississippi has traditionally been synonymous with racial bigotry. Such a stance would have encouraged some of its partners to have no qualms attacking African-American students at the university, maybe in the mistaken belief that the university would be sympathetic and supportive. It is refreshing that the university has changed its stance to adopt a tougher position. This should be the way forward for this institution and the society at large.

Race has been a major issue since the founding of the United States, through the Civil War to modern-day police shooting. Recent research around human genome suggests race is a social construction erroneously based on skin color. Genetic make-up is more different within a race than across races. Yet apart from migration, reproduction across species could have led to a part of the socially constructed Caucasian race.

Early migration of the human species was mostly from Africa. Another wave of movement from Africa was during the slave trade. After America’s independence, there came the Abolitionist Movement that was one of the precursors to the Civil War. Justice was further upended by the rise of the Confederates, spearheaded by the Ku Klux Klan. Yet some of the beliefs, values and cultures of those times persist in some parts of society to date.

The fight for justice as regards racial equality and fairness is led by individuals, communities and governments. Individuals include such people as Colin Kaepernick   and Angela Peoples while communities such as Black Lives Matter front the issue. There are government initiatives such as the Equal Opportunity Employment Act that has recommended fairness, equality and affirmative action.

Fight for social justice

The university and town communities have pointed out that many women from all races dress this way at the stated time of 2 am but they have never being photographed and criticized, a situation that raises gender and patriarchal system issues. Nonetheless to racially target women as seemingly the ones with loose morals and leading to the decline of the property prices is preposterous. The local and national media has been scathing in their attack of Ed Meek’s post.

Unlike in the past, the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) has taken the lead in the fight for social justice as regards this issue. Notably, this was an unexpected and welcome development since “it looked as though the University of Mississippi, a name almost synonymous with racial strife, would be rocked by yet another controversy” (Hassan, 2018). Chancellor Jeffrey Vitter responded to the post thus, “I must condemn the tone and content of Ed Meek’s post from earlier today. The photos in his post suggest an unjustified racial overtone that is highly offensive. I urge Ed to withdraw his comment and apologize ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
