QUESTION 4
1. Your unit was called to the home of a 52-year-old female, who is complaining of blurred vision and loss of coordination. Her family stated that she was able to function fully a couple of months ago but has been gradually experiencing weakness in her extremities, along with blurred vision. You assessed the patient and found her vital signs to be BP 118/66, P-98, R-16, SpO2-98% on room air, and her electrocardiogram shows a sinus rhythm. Upon examination, you noticed the patient had weakness in both lower extremities and difficulty focusing on your hand. The patient denies any dizziness. An IV was successfully established. Upon arrival to the hospital, the doctor immediately told the unit to take the patient to run an MRI. You stayed to complete paperwork but decided to return to ask the doctor about the results of the MRI. The doctor stated the patient’s MRI was positive for multiple sclerosis (MS). What is multiple sclerosis? How does the disease affect the neurological system? What does an MS patient experience?
Your response must be at least 500 words in length

Consider the following topics. In many U.S. communities, low-income populations use the emergency room instead of going to a physician or mid-level provider’s office. They often do not pay the bill for their service, which shifts the cost of their care to other, paying patients at the hospital. This practice drives up the cost of health care, but what else can hospitals do? They have to have a certain amount of income to keep their doors open. Is this fair? What if these sick people remain untreated and infect others? Is this just? Do they deserve care so that they don’t infect others? We talk about a culture of poverty in this country. What does this mean to you? What about those people who seem to bilk or misuse the health care system? Do they deserve care? If so, who should pay for it? Shouldn’t everyone be forced to carry health insurance so that everyone has a pay source? Can we expect people to pull themselves up by their bootstraps?
To prepare for this Discussion, you will need to consider the following questions:
What does social justice mean to you? Is social justice the same as socialized medicine or even communism?
The notion of social justice is fairness so that everyone can achieve a certain level of health and wellness. After all, the Constitution guarantees everyone the right to pursue happiness. Is the health care system fair?
If you could wave a magic wand and fix the health care system, what is the first thing you would notice indicating that it had changed? Or, in your opinion, do you think it needs to be changed at all?
Post your response to this Discussion.
Support your response with references from the professional nursing literature.
Notes Initial Post: This should be a 3-paragraph (at least 350 words) response. Be sure to use evidence from the readings and include in-text citations. Utilize essay-level writing practice and skills, including the use of transitional material and organizational frames. Avoid quotes; paraphrase to incorporate evidence into your own writing. A reference list is required. Use the most current evidence (usually ≤ 5 years old).

What does social justice mean to you? Is social justice the same as socialized medicine or even communism?
For this assignment you will apply the knowledge you’ve gained from reading and discussing Dorothy Roberts’ Fatal Invention to a contemporary issue found in traditional written news outlets (e.g., newspapers and magazines) or the blogosphere. Select an instance where the myth of the biological concept of race is being used in medicine/pharmacy, ancestry testing, or criminal justice and write a 2-3 page paper that includes the following: 1. Describe (contextualize) the issue: What incident took/is taking place? Where and when did it happen? Who are the parties involved? Where did you first come across this event/incident? (cite using the proper in-text APA formatting and include in bibliography) 2. Digging deeper into the use of science: Explain how science is being used to justify what happened. Using what you’ve learned from the Roberts book, critique the logic and reasoning of those defining race as a biological concept. Where are they going wrong? 3. Those who benefit and those who suffer: Who benefits from science being used in this way? How? Think about both immediate and long-term benefits. What are the potential detrimental effects of using science in this way? Why? Think about both immediate and long-term consequences. Does this issue relate to any specific fights for social justice? 4. Personal reflection: How is the issue related to your life, experiences, feelings and ideas? For instance, what emotions did exploring this topic arouse in you? You must include a bibliography.
The spirometer is used to measure lung capacity among people. It has implications on clinical diagnoses, disability measurements and pre-employment medical analysis. However, the spirometer has embedded internal corrections to show that blacks have a lower lung capacity, leading to implicit discrimination in diagnosis, self-awareness and employment.
Still widely used today, the spirometer can be traced to a study by Benjamin A Gould in the 19th century to quantify the bodies of Union borders soldiers after the American Civil War. As discussed by Shaban (2014), the study showed that blacks have an inherent biological deficiency of having lower lung capacity.
2. Scientific justification
Following Gould’s study, a scientific consensus that whites have higher lung capacity emerged and was developed over the next few decades. While Gould’s study was quantitative and looked accurate and objective, he did not offer explanations for his findings. But due to politics, Gould’s study was preferred to other more accurate, qualitative studies such as those of Jedidiah H Baxter, Kelly Miller and WB Du Bois. The blind acceptance of Gould’s findings led to a spirometer that has inbuilt correctional facility triggered by the required racial identification. The spirometer design and production is hence based on beliefs and values rather than empirical scientific research.
The spirometer negates studies of the human genome that show there are more differences in genetic makeup within a race than across races. Most genetic differences are hence a result of individual personality and characteristics rather than race. The studies that attribute racial differences in lung capacity further ignore environmental and economic factors. It has been established that people who live in highly polluted areas have lower lung capacity, the abode for many of the traditionally economically deprive who constitute many blacks.
3. Consequences
The spirometer validates race biologically, leading to misdiagnosis of people based on the sociological construction of race. In the short-term it denies those perceived as black opportunities enabled by accurate measurement of their lung capacity, such as employment opportunities. The benefactors are the whites who are seen as having better lung capacities.
The lack of opportunities for blacks affects their livelihoods such as diet and health. It also increases crime rate among the group as the deprived try to uplift their lot in all ways possible despite the employment rejection. By wrongly labeling people as disabled due to incorrect spirometer measurement, it also lowers the people’s self-esteem. In the long-term, it affects their economic situation by lowering the earning potential. Further, it affects their life expectancy, leading to passing on of economic struggles to their dependents and subsequent generations.
4. Reflections
The spirometer has led to stereotyping of many blacks as unworthy of employment and susceptible to being criminals. The consequences have been that various security agencies such as some police departments racially profile the afflicted, leading to unnecessary deaths and tension in the community and society. Tension is further escalated by the sense………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Public health efforts and those of private medicine complement each other and together serve the spectrum of health service needs of American society. Why, then, has their relationship been so contentious?
The Institute of Medicine report of 1999 cites two major studies that establish medical errors as one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. Should the federal government take the necessary steps to monitor the status of this high-risk situation, as it does with other epidemics, or should the government continue to trust the providers of health care to deal forthrightly with the problem?
Analyze why legislative attempts to address only one of the trio of rising costs, lack of universal access, or variable quality of health care only worsens the remaining two.
Please submit one APA formatted paper between 1000 – 1500 words, not including the title and reference page. The assignment should have a minimum of two (2) scholarly sources, in addition to the textbook.

The Institute of Medicine defines quality as “the degree to which health services for individuals and populations increase the likelihood of desired health outcomes and are consistent with current professional knowledge”. Waiting to obtain an appointment with your MD or sitting for long periods in the Emergency Room can have negative health effects.
You open your social media app and you see a story on your timeline from your local news station that stated the following: Deaths due to long wait times
At Memorial hospital (inpatient and outpatient services), wait times to be seen for the emergency room (ER) and for primary care exceed quality standards. The wait times could range between three to four hours at the ER and an hour or two to be seen at the primary care clinic. Appointments to see a surgeon for surgical procedures are booking out weeks, unfortunately leading to deaths. Because of this, the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is sending a team to conduct an audit. One possible result of the visit could be a reduction or loss of federal funding. Your job is to write a report that lead to a positive outcome for the hospital.
Examine this report: Measuring Health Care Quality: An Overview of Quality Measures
Implement quality measures at Memorial Hospital
Include the following aspects in the report:
Ø Choose a quality measure for each problem you identify
Ø Consider how you will implement changes to achieve the standards
Ø Outline the financial impact of your changes
Ø What kinds of systems need to be created to track progress?
