Explore Triton’s mixed feelings about Miss Nili moving into Mr Salgado’s home

SECTION A
Answer the question on Reef OR the question on Playing in the Light. Your essay in Section A should be about 1000-1200 words, and include a bibliography of all your cited sources.
QUESTION 1 — Romesh Gunesekera: Reef
In an essay of 1000-1200 words, explore Triton’s mixed feelings about Miss Nili moving into Mr Salgado’s home, basing your response in a close analysis of the extract below. You should also quote and discuss at least one other relevant example of your own choice from the novel where Triton appears to struggle with his feelings for Miss Nili, having to be loyal to his master but also admiring her, and requiring her approval.
I should have expected it, I suppose, but the speed at which our circumstances changed surprised me. I didn’t let anything show. I nodded and quickly picked up the cases. It was not any of my business how they organized their affairs. I was pleased that she was coming to live with us; the whole place seemed to pick up the moment she stepped in…
I took the bags into the bedroom first. I put them down next to the bed; the prospect of moving all his things to the other room was not something to look forward to. And for what purpose? For how long? It was a man’s room: should I change the furniture? My orange curtains? I remembered how she had looked out of the window the time we came in together to choose a shirt. Was this in her mind even then?
(Gunesekera 103, 104 and 105).

QUESTION 2 — Zoë Wicomb: Playing in the Light
Carefully read the following extract, which shows the interactions between two employees in Marion Campbell’s business, MC Travel. Make sure that you re-read the whole section which is relevant to this extract.
Write an essay of 1000 to 1200 words which focuses on the relationship between Brenda and Boetie, and how this reflects questions of race and gender. Your essay should begin with a short opening paragraph introducing the novel as a whole.
In the first part of the body of your essay, briefly contextualise the given extract, and then carefully analyse the dynamics between Brenda and Boetie, explaining what this reveals about them, and their attitudes to each other. In what ways do Brenda’s and Boetie’s gender and race affect their interactions? How, do you think, Brenda is feeling at this moment? Support all your responses with detailed analysis of the extract, quoting examples as evidence.
In the second part of the essay, find one other relevant moment in the novel where Boetie and
Brenda interact with each other. Copy down this second extract which you have chosen yourself (not more than 12 typed out lines, which can be added as additional to your word count), and explain what it reveals about Brenda as a person. Again, make sure to quote examples from the extract to support your argument.
Give your essay a suitable title.
Brenda’s back is stiff after hours at the computer. She raises her arms, holds the stretch, then bends down slowly to touch her toes. Ten times, while Boetie stares at her rump, over which the cloth of her trousers strains as she bends.
Boetie addresses the doubled-over body, Are you making tea?
Brenda, drawing herself up, says, No, it’s too hot for tea, but if I change my mind I’ll let you know.
Milk and two sugars, he says from behind the newspaper.
Brenda does not reply; she retrieves her jersey and stands at the window with the garment swinging from the hook of her thumb.
Jesus, what is this country coming to, Boetie exclaims. (Wicomb, 42)
SECTION B
Question 3 – Short Stories
“The Company of Wolves” and “Manoka” are stories where characters transform in ways that affect the developments that take place in these stories. Choose one of the stories and write an essay of 300 – 400 words that discusses the importance of the transformation in the story. Choose relevant sections from the story to support your response, and make sure to quote and discuss examples from the text as evidence for your interpretation.

Hesse-Biber e-book, Mixed Methods Research: Merging Theory

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, read Chapters 1 and 2 of the Hesse-Biber e-book, Mixed Methods Research: Merging Theory with Practice, and the two required articles for this week. Mixed methods is a current popular methodology. While this type of methodology is useful for some studies, because of its dual nature as both quantitative and qualitative, it is not effective or appropriate for all research.

For this discussion, you will consider the use of mixed methods for the topic you have chosen for your Research Proposal. In your initial post, apply the scientific method to your research topic by defining your research question and determining the method(s) necessary to answer that question. Compare the characteristics and appropriate uses of the different methods and explain if your research question could best be answered through qualitative or quantitative methods, or a mix of both. Identify the dominant method (quantitative or qualitative) for your proposed study. Explain whether or not a mixed methods approach is the best way to study the topic, demonstrating that the second method is not added as an afterthought or merely to impress journal editors who favor mixed methods. If you have decided not to use mixed methods, explain why the study is best completed with either a quantitative or qualitative focus. Justify your design choice and support your position with scholarly sources. Include a discussion explaining how you would apply ethical principles to your design to address concerns which may impact your research.

Discussion

For this discussion, I considered the use of mixed methods for my chosen topic of social psychological science. The research question that this study attempted to addressed was “How does studying social psychology as a science prove beneficial to the clinical context? Considering that mixed methods involves the use of quantitative and qualitative, I believe it is the appropriate approach to accurately answer my research question(Hesse-Biber, 2010). Studies indicated that mixed methods enable the researchers to analytically and conceptually integrate qualitative research and qualitative data such as focus groups, observations and semi-structured interviews, with quantitative methods of research and traditional epidemiological to facilitate translation.

I think the most dominant method would be qualitative because the study will require the use of first-hand questionnaire and interviews. At the start of the study, I could say that quantitative results played the leading role in the qualitative design. However, I strongly believe that mixed method would be the best approach to study the topic of social psychological science(Wisdom, et al., 2012). I am of the view that mixed method follows a set of stairs, where quantitative method is first considered, followed by qualitative methods and lastly settling on mixed method when the study will involve the use of both quantitative and qualitative methods.             The key ethical principle that must be considered in the study is the signing of informed consent by all patients taking part in the study of social psychological sciences. This is an indication that they understand their protections, privileges and their rights(American Psychological Association, 2010). This study will adhere………………………………………………………………………………………………

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Interpreting Mixed Methods Data

Mixed methods involve the use of both the qualitative and quantitative research methodology in the collection and analysis of research data (Johnson & Onwuegbuzie, 2004). The qualitative research design involves descriptive/exploratory statistics, while quantitative involves the use of hard numbers and results that are provable. The use of mixed methods in data collection offers some advantages and disadvantages in the interpretation of research data.

Mixed methods data is often comprehensive as it incorporates both qualitative and quantitative data. The use of mixed methods data provides a meaningful and broad way in which research phenomena can be interpreted. Moreover, (Johnson & Onwuegbuzie, 2004) points with an appropriate design, mixed methods data can mirror the findings of the individual research designs. This can act as an advantage since it acts as a way of validating research data.

However, mixed methods data interpretation can be challenging and time intensive since their interpretations and data are often abstract (Johnson & Onwuegbuzie, 2004). The quantitative data often tries to answer one consistent truth. In contrast, the qualitative data is focused on several answers. Thos can lead to analysis of different problems. Moreover, the use of mixed methods and its data interpretation requires training and mastery of both research designs (Johnson & Onwuegbuzie, 2004). The authors further note mixed methods data interpretation can be subject to bias. Since people are often different, some may be more adept in performing in one research methodology than the other. For example, a researcher could be more competent in using quantitative than qualitative research design. The difference in the levels of knowledge in the two research designs
