Have a strong lead for your introduction paragraph.

The personal narrative is about ONE SHORT MOMENT in time (30 minutes or less).
Expand on details. Your character and setting descriptions should be so detailed that I could draw a picture from your written description.
Have a reflection paragraph for your conclusion. In this reflection paragraph, look back on this moment and explain how it has affected you, the people around you, and/or the world around you. Be sure not to use YOU in this. You are reflecting, not telling the reader how to feel.
Re-read and have someone else read it. Check to make sure each sentence has a subject and predicate. Make sure you are in the same tense (past or present) the entire time, check comma placement, dialogue, etc.
Make only one small space between paragraphs.
Use strong word choice. Get rid of words such as said, good, bad, happy, etc.
Show me your emotion and explain WHY you were devastated or why you were overjoyed.
Take your time; do not wait until the last minute. You are capable of this task, I know you can succeed. Writing papers take time, but there is a great sense of accomplishment when hard work has been put into a paper.

For me, nothing could have been more regrettable than being a young lad in high school until the minute I turned into an adolescent in secondary school with depression. The pain I endured for quite some times, after a long time was doubtlessly insufferable. I felt as though I was suffocating in a pool of self-loathing and self-damage. The night I was conceded into the doctor’s facility still replays in the back of my brain. I required help. While my companions went out, I stayed home. When I went to meetings, I really wanted to think that I would have had a superior time all alone. Notwithstanding when encompassed by others, I still felt shut out, as though I were not the same as others. Literacy Narrative Assignment: Your Story About a Discourse/Community
A Literacy Narrative is an autobiographical story about your experience/s with literacy, language, and communication. Tell a story about struggling with or feeling empowered by learning how to communicate/become literate in a particular discourse community. Your goal here is to narrate a story that describes vividly your experiences with a particular literacy and to reflect on why and how your experiences were significant. Think of this assignment as a combination of creative storytelling and honest reflection about how a discourse community’s way of communicating has shaped your identity in some important way. I like to tell students to think about a time they were transformed or deeply affected by learning the rules of communication in a particular community.
James Gee explains that “Discourses are ways of being in the world, or forms of life which integrate words, acts, values, beliefs, attitudes, social identities, as well as gestures, glances, body positions and clothes. A Discourse is a sort of ‘identity kit’ which comes complete with the appropriate costume and instructions on how to act, talk, and often write, so as to take on a particular social role that others will recognize.” This means “literacy” isn’t about just reading and writing, but learning about how to work in and contribute to a community.
The purpose of this assignment is to (continue to) reflect on some aspect of your history as a writer/reader/language user and how language has shaped your identity, values, beliefs, behavior, or worldview. Your story needs to have a point, a lesson, a “So What?” Was there a lesson learned? What did you learn as you succeeded or failed at the literacy you attempted? How is your story unique (or not unique)? How have you been shaped by a particular language practice?
And again, as usual, we will discuss and explore the parameters of this assignment. This genre of writing is more creative, using concrete detail, narration, and story telling.
You may pick one specific event you can chronicle a literacy history chronologically, or you can write about several events though one uniting theme.
You are encouraged to narrate experiences that take place inside or outside of educational settings. You learn many discourses in your life, all of which shape you important ways. We become literate in many different discourses and communities throughout our lives– personal, vocational, educational, spiritual, extra curricular, and more.
Directions: Choose two topics to write about. Each essay should be at least 2 pages and follow MLA format. Note: Avoid mere plot summary. (25 points each)
Conflict drives the plot of any narrative. Choose any narrative we have read this semester – summarize the plot, identify the conflict, discuss how the conflict is resolved, and what meaning can be drawn by its resolution.

Choose any work from the second half of the semester (Candide, Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Song of Myself, Hedda Gabler, or Heart of Darkness and write an essay in which you present arguments for or against the work’s relevance for a person in 2019.
Hedda Gabler received mixed reviews when it was first staged in 1891. George Bernard Shaw praised the actress who played Hedda. He said, “You were sympathetically unsympathetic, which was the exact solution of the central difficulty of playing Hedda.” In your essay, examine the character of Hedda. Using support from the play, discuss how she arouses both sympathy and scorn? Which does she deserve most?
Summarize the different philosophical perspectives put forth in Discuss Pangloss, Jacques (the Anabaptist), Martin, the old woman, the farmer, the dervish. With which character do you most agree?
